What do you think about Iconoclast?

Iconoclast is unremarkable. "Iconoclast", "Children...", and "Dehumanized" are listenable tunes. The rest of the lot range from mediocre on downward. The songwriting is uninspired, the lyrics are trite, and what happened to the progressive element? The guitars, while improved from the...

    Portnoy left DT

I did find the auditions entertaining; it was great to see some of the best drummers in the world in action. However, how they came to the decision of Mangini was puzzling. He was probably the 4th or 5th most interesting pick of the lot. I found it peculiar that Jordan said something to the...

    Rig on Delusions

Hey Tom, I'm really feeling your tone on Delusions, specifically on the song "Glory of a New Day." If you don't mind divulging the information, I'd love to know what guitar, pickups, amps, etc., you used on that record to get that sound. Thanks for any insights.

    Haken - Aquarius

I'm in complete agreement with you here. The production value is superb and the songwriting is masterful. I'd even go one step further than your friend and say this might be the best prog metal album I've ever heard. "Point of Return" and "Streams" are instant classics. And don't even get me...

Paradise Lost not the best album

Production value has been Symphony X's Achilles' Heel since day one. With the Odyssey, it finally sounded like they were getting a grasp on getting a good studio sound, but then they released Paradise Lost... The guitar tones on PL are just bad. The timbre of the guitars is way too harsh...

    Orphaned Land-about ORwarriOR new album

I actually found the ethnic songs to be my favorite tracks on Mabool. The straight metal songs were painfully bland.

New Alice in Chains "Black Gives Way to Blue"

You are not wrong, Mr. Allen has cited both Chris Cornell and Layne Staley as influences and/or among his favorite singers. (On a related note, the intro to "Awakenings" is pure Cornell).

New Alice in Chains "Black Gives Way to Blue"

They are a standout band because they wrote some of the best songs in the history of Hard Rock. I refer you to "Would" and "Nutshell." And, it's Staley, not Stanley. As for the new CD, I have not heard it, but the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.

    Merch merch merch!

I agree with this sentiment. I'd love some t-shirt options with just "Symphony X" written on them... no lightning... no naked women flying around... no cloaked figures peering into other dimensions...

    Perfect Albums

Good thread idea. For me, there is only one masterwork in progressive metal, Dream Theater's "Awake". Awake has perfect production, great flow, great hooks, enough complexity for repeat listens, and, most importantly, no filler. Outside the progressive metal genre, I feel the aforementioned...

    2008 Political debate thread

What a great night for America. It's interesting to see the cynics on this board downplaying what could possibly be the most substantial and impactful cultural event of our lifetime. He will make a great leader.

    2008 Political debate thread

The crux of my argument was the CNN blog? I'm just as happy using your source, you know, the one you plagarised to "prove" your point. If you would think instead of cupping Sidney's nuts you may make something of yourself one day. Naaa..forget it...wouldn't want you to strain yourself.

You misrepresent your sources, therefore I'm "cupping Hussien's nuts." I love conservative logic. :kickass: Good luck tomorrow. :)
