a good medium priced metal kit is the pearl export. common, so parts won't be a hassle, strong hardware, big sound, mass produced. similar kits are made by tama, mapex, sonor, premier, and others, but i think in this particular price range the pearl is slightly better.

Yeah I reckon the lower the better too. I use 12 or 13 - 54's and tune down to B. Not much tension, but action is low (a bit of buzz there) and it is real easy to play. I have a floyd rose etc. but don't really use the bar.

are you playing double kick? if not i would suggest you try to get a d/kick pedal setup now coz its hard to learn later on. anyway if you use d/kick then its probably best if you dont have the hi hats to far open or they will sound shit when you are busy with the kicks.
