I still love that song more than approximately 78% of songs they've released since.

I don't understand it, either. To me, a song like Divine Wings or The Odyssey would be mature, whereas Without You or The End of Innocence, while not being "immature" per se, would be less developed. Songs that draw from multiple genres of music and weave complex rhythms into the work seem more...

They definitely need to bring back the longer instrumental sections. Paradise Lost only had one, and Iconoclast had a few, but I miss the 5-6 minute instrumental portions of songs like Divine Wings or The Odyssey.

I actually like the new Fates Warning album quite a bit. Granted, I don't know too much about their back catalog, having only heard APSOG and FWX (both a LONG time ago). What albums would you all recommend? My favorites from this new album are Seven Stars, SOS, Light and Shade, and Ghosts of...

Adagio is a very talented group of guys, and it's clear they've been frustrated with their last few albums. They have a point. It's also cool to hear them talk; I always just assumed they were a bunch of shadowy virtuoso wraiths living in wine cellars beneath ancient cathedrals in Paris.

I think it's a solid album. It's not as consistent as Paradise Lost, but the overall sound is more Symphony X-ish and the strong songs are a bit more memorable. I feel it's a very "safe" release that doesn't alienate the fans of more progressive material but also is not strong enough to wow the...

Rank your top 5 Symphony X albums (and post your top 3 songs from each album)

I can't rank the albums; I love them all minus the debut and Iconoclast (the former due to the singer). But I'll try to pick my top three from each... Damnation Game - Edge - Dressed - Winter's Dream pt. 2 Divine Wings - Divine Wings - Candlelight - Accolade Twilight - Looking Glass - Church...

The only Haken song that ever floored me was Crystallized, but even it gets a bit too Dream Theater-wanky in the middle somewhere.

How to convince the guys to play their old material again?

I think it's highly unlikely that we're going to hear anything pre-Paradise Lost live other than the typical Sins, Smoke, Inferno, etc. Ashes and DOB surprised me on their latest tour, but I wouldn't expect any deep cuts or anything. Moving forward, I'd expect 80% of their set to be from their...

I think the full song mix sounds excellent, but I can't hear the difference by using a pick. Same goes for those few Dream Theater songs where Myung uses a pick - it just isn't audible to me.

Thanks for sharing, Gentleman! He uses a lot of pedals; I'll have to look into that for my own playing. Cool pick holder on his bass, too, although I wonder why he opts to use a pick at all as none of the song is too technically demanding. The sound difference during the heavy riffs kind of gets...

Snowfall on Judgement Day has some really strong tracks on it, but otherwise I haven't found many standout songs by Redemption.

Some Underworld lyrics missing words please...

Aside from the first bold line below in To Hell and Back, these mostly sound like improvised lines by Russell, which is why they're probably not printed in the booklet. To Hell and Back (cd time @ 6:22) : On and on and on…No quarter asked, no quarter given. On and on and on…The past can never...

    Dream Theater: The Astonishing

The last two albums have definitely been more to the point, with the wanking sessions more restrained. But ADTOE was full of longer songs with instrumental sections that served little to no purpose (Outcry, I'm looking at you). Actually, I guess it was just Outcry and Lost Not Forgotten, which...

    Rock Band 4 - Nevermore

I'd prefer pretty much any other song from the new album, but I'm glad to see the band getting more exposure.

    Recommended Symphony X album...

All of their albums have a pretty solid balance between the fast stuff, mid-tempo stuff, and slower groovier stuff. Of the older works, I'd recommend Divine Wings, as others have mentioned. As the band has aged, their work has gotten more metal and less symphonic and orchestral. Of their newer...

I've never really listened to Ghost before, but I decided to check out Meliora and so far I'm enjoying it. I have to say that it's a lot mellower than I was expecting.
