Good point. I guess I meant beauty in the most traditional way, i.e. perhaps gorgeous melodic passages like the ones I mentioned in the OP. Then again, death metal with melodic tendencies is often whimpy and/or wanky shit, so it's hard to think of a lot of examples.
I'll extend the topic to any...
What are some great death metal songs or albums that feature passages that could qualify as 'beautiful'? I think the outro of In Mist She Was Standing is clearly the best example of this. Another one not by Opeth I can think of right now is the last couple minutes of "Kali" by !T.O.O.H...
I'm not batshit crazy for their album like I was back when it came out, but it still rules. I get the Weakling comparisons, but I don't think they sound that much alike..

Ghost of perdition - 10
The night and the silent water - 6
Bleak - 7
Moonlapse Vertigo - 8
Heir apparent - 6
Demon of the fall - 5
The baying of the hounds - 9
Black rose immortal - 7
The moor - 10
The drapery falls - 8
well it just has a dark, rough quality to it that no other Opeth album has, and I really dig the sound. like I said, GR or Watershed obviously is technically better in terms of production, but I personally like MAYH's sound more.
"Indie" is quite a broad term; I find many of the current so-called "indie" bands to be repugnant; notably Deerhunter and TV on the Radio, the latter of which has released three or four excellent songs and a great strew of other ones ranging from mediocre to terrible. Lord knows how they receive...
