If you just want it for this generation of gaming consoles and possibly Foxtel HD you would only need 1080i if you arn't picky.

Also how far away will you be sitting from the TV, because if you are too close getting a bigger one will not be a good idea as it will blur.

The thing I did was go to JB HI FI and look at all the TVs and see what I liked best. By comparison I preferred Sonys picture over Samsung as they were too black. They say black is the hardest to make on a LCD but just because you can do it don't mean you should over use it and I personally think Samsung have. I have read good things about Toshiba as well.
I should have actually pointed that out, that 1080i and 1080p have major differences when watching Blu-Ray movies, yet since Mitch is only using it for gaming and watching the odd TV show, he'll probably only need 1080i since he isn't that picky on the sharpness of the image.

Sony's have amazing clarity and sharpness, but Samsung are still a decent brand and produce amazing picture on their TVs.
