I have a laptop here at uni:

P4 2.66 GHz
512 Mb ram
DVD +/- RW
16.1" SXGA+ screen (don't ask me, but I think it rocks!)
40 GB HD

And that's all I know. I've been using it for the last week to run models of the temperature and heat flux around igneous intusions as they cool over 1,000,000 years, giving out JPGs, VTK's and text files for graphing. That has really used up all the system resources when running, and the program can take hours to days to finish depending on time scale, but it has coped surprisingly well

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 333mHz FSB
512MB DDR PC3200
120GB HD
GeForce4 MX 440 w/ 128MB
CD / DVD / CD-RW combo drive
blah blah
dual boot with WinXP and Mandrake Linux 9.1

I was getting back into computer geekdom when I bought this thing last year, but all I do is go on the internet and play Morrowind.

Not that AMD is much better.
At least HyperThreading works.

HyperTransport seems to be a good idea, but the Nforce chipsets seem to have too many problems.

3DNow! is dead.

I would have bought AMD, but Intel is superior right now. My last computer was an Athlon 700, and I've owned other AMD processors in the past, but this time around Intel is teh win.

Xenophobe: The Nforce3 will kick ass eventually, new chipset's out soon and should be great. However, an A64 3200 even now owns your Pentium and my lowly Athlon

I have the XT, and am running 418/364.5, but I've gone as high as 430/376, but I get VPU recovers... so I went back to default... yours should be able to bump up a bit... though the program costs some money.

Eventually. The nForce3 WILL kick ass, but there are just too many problems, especially with video cards. I don't want to pay money to be a lab rat...

I also didn't pay $800 for my CPU either. The A64FX was $800 more than my P4 3.2 when I bought it. As for the A64FX owning it, yes, but the Athlon 3200 doesn't. And the Athlon 64FX doesn't own the P4 Extreme Edition 3.2, which is roughly the same price.

I'm embarassed that my 2 computers are prebuilt, but I didn't have to pay for them

HP
Athlon XP 3000+
512 MB RAM (DDR of course)
120 GB HD
DVD +/-RW Drive
CD RW Drive
Geforce 64 video

And while that one's being repaired my mom decided to get...

E-Machines (aarg!)
Athlon XP 2700+
256 MB DDR
80 gig HD
"S3 UniChrome Integrated Video"
CDRW Drive
DVD Drive

Right now with a 17" (16" viewable ) Princeton Monitor...

As soon as the EM is exclusively for my use it's getting a new video card (it has an AGP slot), more ram (probably 512 more since I don't think I'll use more than 768) , and possibly a new motherboard. And of course a reformat and repainting of the case so anythign to do wiyth emachines is gone from it. ugh.. emahcines.... once I have money to go towards a comp I'll be getting an athlon 3000+ or so, maybe a gig of ram, lots more HD space for all my shit, and a Soyo Dragon KT600 ultra platinum motherboard.

and on the subject of hyperthreading, I called up home shopping network a few months ago and bitched at their operator about how their "tech specialists" were idiots and they had no idea what they were talking about. apparently hyper threading technology takes one piece of data and gives half of it to each side of the processor like you can put several peas on a fork, then puts it back into one piece and sends it to the hard drive... what the fuck? I also told them that a 2.4 pentium with 256 megs of ram and a 40 gig hard drive (sony viao) is not top of the line. the op hung up on me after a minute...
