Yan's Top 13 of 2006
Well it's been a pretty damn good year for music and movies so here we go:
Top 13 CDs: 13 - Hammerfall - Threshold: Pretty lackluster effort in my opinion. 12 - Jon Oliva's Pain - Maniacal Renderings: Not bad, but not nearly as good as Tage Mahal. 11 - Luca Turilli - The Infinite Wonders of Creation: Would've liked to hear more tracks with Olaf on vox. 10 - Pyramaze - The Legend of the Bone Carver: Great follow up to their debut; Melancholy Beast. 9 - Rhapsody of Fire - Triumph or Agony: If you like Rhapsody of Fire's other stuff you'll love this; if not, you won't. 8 - Winger - IV - Surprisingly good for a band that hadn't recorded together in 13 years. 7 - Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny - Great; just great! 6 - Blackmore's Night - The Village Lantern: I didn't really get into their previous releases but this one definitely has some majic on there. 5 - Blind Guardian - A Twist In The Myth: Took me a LONG time to get into; I'm glad I stuck with it. 4 - Dionysus - Fairytales and Reality: I don't understand how this band isn't more popular; they write great songs from album to album; this one is certainly no exception. 3 - Edguy - Rocket Ride: I think this is their best cd; full of great hooks and enjoyable music. 2 - Mob Rules - Ethnolution A.D.: This is definitely their strongest release to date; very well done guys. 1 - Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life And Death: What can I say? MAIDEN!!! These guys couldn't do a bad cd if they tried; one of their best!! ![]() Top 13 Songs: 13 - Kickapoo - Tenacious D: Great lyrics and music thanks to Dave Grohl and Jack Black. Has guest vocals from Meat Loaf and Ronny James Dio!! 12 - On A Day Like Today - Winger: Very moving song. 11 - Rebel Inside - Hammerfall: Great song from a disapointing cd. 10 - The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg - Iron Maiden: Gotta hand it to them for releasing this as the first single; it's 7 and a half minutes of tasty riffs and outstanding vox. 9 - Unholy War - Mob Rules: Great opener to a great cd. 8 - The Birth - Pyramaze: Lance's vocals are simply haunting in this one! 7 - Mystic and Divine - Luca Turilli: Wonderful duet that gives me goose bumps every time! 6 - The Longest Day - Iron Maiden: Another great war song from the legends! 5 - Fucking With Fire (Hair Force One) - Edguy: Very cool and humorous lyrics makes this a fun song to listen to. 4 - Another Stranger Me - Blind Guardian: Classic BG here; makes me want to hit replay as soon as its over. 3 - Illusion of Life - Dionysus: Fantastic song to kick off a solid cd. 2 - I Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore - Blackmore's Night: I'm very surprised at myself for rating a song like this so high but I can't help it; it's awesome!! 1 - For The Greater Good of God - Iron Maiden: Song of the year from the greatest band ever!! Top 13 Movies: 13 - Lucky Number Sleven: Pretty good guy flick. 12 - The DaVinci Code: I enjoyed it. 11 - The Departed: I think Martin Scorsese tried a bit too hard to recreate Goodfellas. 10 - The Good Shephard: Great directing job by Robert De Niro 9 - Invincible: I usually can't stand Disney movies but this one is very well done. 8 - Talladega Nights: Judd Apatow rules! 7 - Saw III: Great finale (hopefully) to the series. 6 - Tenacious D In The Pick of Destiny: I like the HBO series better but it was pretty good. 5 - Beerfest: Another strong outing by Broken Lizzard; can't wait for Supertroopers 2. 4 - Little Miss Sunshine: What a great movie; definitely a strong candidate for movie of the year. 3 - Deja Vu: Not usually a fan of Densel Washington but he delivered one hell of a performance in this one. 2 - The Prestige: Awesome movie; written and directed by the same guys that did Batman Begins: this movie is a million times better! 1 - Nacho Libre: This is truly a wonderful movie; I don't care what anyone thinks! Feel free to post your comments and/or post your own lists.

My top 13...
Cds: 13.) Beyond Fear - Beyond Fear - This album is nothing new or original, but I will tell you that Ripper uses a proven formula and this album completely slays. I really am a fan of this band and have been a fan of Ripper since the Priest days, fuck what others think. 12.) Cellador - Enter Deception - I fell in love with these guys at the Gamma Ray show here in May. I went and got their cd the day it came out and love it. 11.) Dissection - Reinkaos - I really like this album, nothing really like Storm of The Lights Bane/Where Dead Angels Lie (the only other I have from them), but still really good, been getting a lot of play from me. 10.) Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death - Same as with BG, I am trying, although I will say that The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg is absolutely stunning. 9.) Blind Guardian - Twist In The Myth - not gonna say much about this one, haven't gotten into it as much as most others, I am trying, and it is slowly coming to me, like what I hear so far. 8.) Lamb Of God - Sacrament - Wow, this is one of the few bands that I like from this decade, and when I say like, I mean they are incredible. For someone who is as dedicated to the "Old School" side of metal as me, even I find it surprising that I like these guys as much as I do, but they slay. And this album is no disapointment, it sort of has the Christ Illusion syndrome... angrier than their previous few albums, but it all shows in the musicianship. 7.) Metal Church - A Light In The Dark - It took a while for me to really get into this album, while not their best album to date, definitely their best recent album in my opinion. I love Ronny Munroe's vocals now (they were an aquired taste), and the re-recording of "Watch The Children Pray" dedicated to David Wayne was brilliant. I am really looking forward to seeing these guys live. 5.) Mercenary - The Hours That Remain - My love for this band hasn't left since I saw them at Progpower 4 when Everblack came out. Everblack was good, 11 Dreams was better, and I haven't yet decided which one I like more now... THTR or 11 Dreams... They are both awesome, definitely don't disapoint. 4.) Slayer - Christ Illusion - Damn, who pissed them off in the writing process? This album is even more angry than most of their other stuff, I think it may be their best in years... Great job guys... 3.) Vicious Rumors - Warball - Holy shit... My friend had Sadistic Symphony a few years back and I never really paid them any attention. I am kicking myself now. I heard Warball at one of the famous hotel parties at Progpower this year. I went out and purchased several of their cds after getting Warball, and while most are pretty damn good, I think that Warball is my favorite so far. 2.) Strapping Young Lad - The New Black - Yet again, the best disc they have put out in my opinion, and yes I own every cd by them, so I can make an educated decision. This disc slays! 10 out of 10. 1.) Into Eternity - The Scattering of Ashes - By far the best disc by them and I am a BIG fan of these guys, I hope they can top themselves here, but I don't know... 10 out of a 10. ______________________________________ Movies. Haven't been many movies this year that I have saw other than being up here, so here is an incomplete list. 6.) Rocky Balboa 5.) Miami Vice 4.) Talladega Nights 3.) Snakes On A Plane 2.) Borat 1.) Casino Royale ______________________________________ Songs. Don't have time to do this, have to go to work, may edit later. Brent |

So do I get some credit for turning you on to this song? It seems to me that when we talked about this CD, you hadn't gotten into it yet and I said "Listen some more and pay attention to Another Stranger Me! It rocks!"
