Extreme Metal you can feel good about
Can anyone recommend a good extreme metal band that isn't totally ridiculous?
I want mildly extreme voxx (The Black Dahlia Murder sorta thing), with responsible use of double bass and blast beats (rather than just constant double bass and blast beats for the whole album), heavy guitar riffs (fast or slow, but fuckin' heavy), melody is a plus, and overall, thrash-y. Don't care about speed (like it fast, like it slow). Vocals can be either high (like Anders Friden (In Flames) or Johan Hegg's (Amon Amarth) higher stuff) or low (like the vocalist of Vader , The Black Dahlia Murder, or Johan Hegg's lower stuff).
I don't mind violent lyrics or anything, but I prefer lyrics that aren't just slasher flick bullshit (NO CANNIBAL CORPSE! ), Satanic idiocy (NO DEICIDE! ), or all around assholery. Though a little Satan, little grotesquery, or a little bullshit is fine. And NO EMO SHIT! TRIVIUM SUCK!
I think there are other people out there who would also love to hear something along these lines. I would recommend Burn To Black and Dew-Scented (check out Issue IV) but don't know much else...in terms of thrash, I know Slayer, Exodus, and Kreator (although that's not quite what I'm looking for). Please, if you find something, post it up here.

Thanks a ton, Kalmah is sick!
Lykathea Aflame is cool, but the drum machine thing is a little off-putting, and the vocals are a little brutal...sounds a little like Hates Eternal.
Catamenia is pretty beastly...totally epic, like Wintersun, but more black metal-y.
Novembre is kinda emo/goth-y...where's the metal, I ask you?
Thanks a lot, man. Gotta get some of this Kalmah and Catamenia...also, check out http://www.swashbuckle.info/shanties.html
Amazing pirate thrash metal. From New Jersey. Have to hear it to believe it.

for some reason what you said sounds really funny. Yea Kalmah kicks so much butt it's not even funny. Lykathea Aflame might be too heavy for you I understand, they're one of the heaviest metal bands to exist right now. Umm Novembre's a lil heavy haha, I know a lot of people who are In Flames fans who like Novembre.

Lykathea Aflame do not have a drum machine, the drumming on Elvenefris is extremely well done (plus, that would be very hard to program purposely ).

Yeah, I guess Lykathea Aflame do have a drummer...whew!
I actually bought In Their Darkened Temples by Nile...great, except that the vocals are waayy too deep. Great lyrics, music is brutal but within my tolerance, especially since the musicianship is so impressive, but the vocals just kill it for me.
I listened to the first couple samples on Novembre's myspace, sounded like some sorta alt rock. I looked again...not bad, but not great. Can't find any samples of Moonspell!
Lykathea Aflame is really good, except for two things; the drum sound is terrible (which is part of why I thought it was a drum machine) and the vocals are incomprehensible. I would still buy it, though...pretty awesome, but would be better if vocals were a little less gutteral, imo.

Listen to the songs "Aquamarine", and "Materia" by Novembre. Now. Or just go buy the whole Materia album. I think I should take back my recommendation of Novembers Doom since the vocals are pretty deep , which I like when it comes to doom.
