Noise

Yeah, I don't have examples to give really. Just looking for a good place to start with this genre. I'd prefer dark/ambient, but any recomendations are appreciated.

SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION!

Dark ambient isn't "noise" by definition; in contrast to actual noise, dark ambient and drone ambient are extremely sonorous. Noise music deals in sounds that in other contexts might be distracting, disturbing or even moderately harmful (high frequencies, loud industrial sounds, et al). I am a harsh noise artist with moderate hometown success with releases on international labels with somewhat of a crossover appeal to metal fans (I tend to use "death metal"-esque concepts and stuff and as you can imply it is influential to me in more non-obvious ways).

As for the "light" noise/dark ambient/experimental, I'd be inclined to recommend these:

Troum & Yen Pox - Mnemonic Induction
Lustmord - The Place Where The Black Stars Hang
Atrax Morgue - Sickness Report (Relapse's noise division released this)
Raison d'être - Requiem For Abandoned Souls
Atrium Carceri - Cellblock
Brighter Death Now - Necrose Evangelicum
Navicon Torture Technologies - The Church Of Dead Girls
etc.etc.

Well regarding dark ambient (which mainly what I listen to, I'm not hugely into pure noise) I second all these listed by V5:

Yen Pox,
Lustmord (pretty much the dark ambient artist, if you get anything then get something by him)
Raison d'être
Atrium Carceri

The closest I get to noise would be Navicon Torture Technologies (pretty sure I picked that up from a V5 recc. a long time ago), Gruntsplatter and Merzbow (and I am not even that much of a fan of Merzbow really, he certainly has released a fuckload of boring/non-essential stuff).

Some more dark ambient recs:

Herbst9
Henrik Nordvargr Björkk (he has various projects, most of which include the name Nordvargr in some form)
Kammarheit
Desiderii Marginis

As far as the dark ambient goes I second the Lustmord and Raison d'être recs. Both are great and Lustmord is essential. Also, Nordvargr is pretty dope.

NTT is considered dark ambient/power electronics for the most part. PE is usually defined as more structurally based noise utilizing looped samples, etc. as well as vocals and a darker atmosphere than merely "chaos" used in most harsher noise stuff. Gruntsplatter is considered to be one of the best death industrial artists, and is also highly recommended. DI is sort of like dark ambient crossed with industrial noise but it can be hard to tell apart from the quieter industrial dark ambient stuff...thankfully I rarely have to make the distinction. The best Merzbow stuff is on Relapse (Tauromachine, Venereology and Pulse Demon) though he has some GREAT stuff on other labels...a few more ESSENTIAL Merzbow releases would include Rainbow Electronics (kudos Alter!), Batztoutai With Material Gadgets and Noisembryo.

Cool, I'll add some of that Merzbow stuff to my check-out list. His discography is such a monstrosity it is difficult to know where to start. I downloaded some of what seemed to be his more popular things on RYM and had mixed feelings about them. None of it has trickled through to my main music collection so far. I still need to give that stuff a proper listen sometime.

It is certainly more extreme than probably anything on your current playlist, but I find a regular listen to Tauromachine to be borderline catchy sometimes. Ah, glorious perspective.

Desiderii Marginis is the best dark ambient projekt out there. I also agree on the Raison d'Etre, Kammarheit and Lustmord recs.

For other great stuff:
Gustaf Hildebrand
Gruntsplatter
15 Degrees Below Zero
Olhon
Tor Lundvall (borderline dark)
Blood Box
Djinn
Dark Water Memories
Svartsinn

For accual noise:
NON
The Grey Wolves
Dissecting Table
Nothing (also goes under dark ambient depending on the album)
