If nothing else, Rush gets beat out in both the hard rock and prog rock categories by Jethro Tull, no contest.
I'd rather listen to all the following hard rock acts over those two:
Aerosmith
AC/DC
Queen
Deep Purple
Mountain
Cactus
...among others.

Prefering to listen to the bands you mentioned is understandable and you could make the case that any are one of / or the greatest rock band. I would just put and prefer Rush and VH over any of those bands.
I'm not a Tull fan at all, but respect thier place in music. To say its "no contest" in comparing Rush to them...thats a bit much.

Haha, I'm a hardcore Tull fan. I see them as the epitome of hard progressive rock.
I've never been a huge fan of Rush or Van Halen. I personally think that calling either one of them the best hard rock band is a bit of a stretch. I can understand you liking them the best, but... whatever.
Actually, I would think that most people would rank a band like Aerosmith or AC/DC as the "best hard rock act."

rush do rule though, i'd pick them over ac/dc or aerosmith or even led zep any day of the week. tull i also like a lot more than any of those bands.

I'd definitely pick Zeppelin or Tull over any of those bands. I wouldn't pick Aerosmith or Queen, but I think that a lot of people would choose them.

i've said this before, i like music that feels more like a conjuring or outpouring than merely a bunch of guys jamming together, it has to either be visceral and stripped down or full of mystery and magic, or preferably a combination of the two. led zep i think go for the latter at times but only occasionally pull it off, whereas stuff like ac/dc and aerosmith is largely grounded in posturing and sleaze.
gotta love queen btw
