Well, it was good while it lasted XD
I like their acoustic stuff, but their death metal stuff is why I listen to them. Hopefully it's not as mellow as Damnation.

Yup, Opeth (the metal band) is pretty much over sadly:
"We don't care what other people think" says Åkerfeldt. "and if the death metal fans don't like it, it's their problem". The frontman also says he grew tired of the "growl metal" as early as the 90's, but can't really explain why earlier Opeth album have had growls in the songs. The death metal days are over. At least for now. |

on reflection it's very allegorical of opeth's career - while they have their roots in black metal and the underground, they've come out from dirt and grown into something so fruity and popular that everyone is queuing up to get a piece of it. what a masterpiece!

I actually think that, while Morningrise and MAYH are the two best metal albums ever made, it's time for Opeth to drop the death metal vocals once and for all. I also hope that the album wouldn't be just a throwback pastiche of the 70's prog sound.

![]() You know it will be. All the prog on the last two albums have been massive 70s cliches. |

There's been a subtle yet increasing contempt shown by Opeth for death metal since the Wilson days. The subtext is that somehow it's inferior, crude and less artistically valid than prog rock. To that end it's been increasingly marginalised in their music (to avoid a sudden shock to their fan base), with the underlying message being that they've only really been doing death metal parts to keep their unsophisticated metal grunts on board. I guess now they've finally thrown off the shackles of a second-rate genre and can concentrate on true art (sarcasm). |
