Anyway, there are new people around, so maybe this thread won't be completely useless.

I always thought that Mr V was Vintersorg!! all what I believed on these years are lies!! ![]() On a serious note, I agree. Garm is the best with Arcturus and Ulver; with Borknagar he did a great job, giving an old viking vibe to the albums, but not so great as ICS and Mr V on the Clean vocal side IMO; the best grim vocals still belongs to Garm.

(second to me is garm)i really cannot understand why so many people likes so much vortex' voice. i really can't stand to it. it seems to me one of the voices with ugliest tone colour i've ever heard...and also a bit out of tune.... ![]() i've spoken, now you can hate me ![]()

And I completely agree with you! Garm gives this "old-rough" vibe to the band, and he's definitely better off in Arcturus (RIP) and Ulver. Quote:
Well I think Vortex is a great vocalist, you can hate him as much as you want, it's your loss . On the other hand… vaffanculo! (Just kidding, OK? )Quote:

Also I prefer the Garm's work on Arcturus over Vortex's work on Arcturus and Borknagar. If the 'current' Garm would sing on Borknagar, I would prefer him over Vortex anytime. Also I think Garm is more balanced as a black metal singer for Bork than Andreas and Simen, but I prefer the Mr V's clean vocal work better.

Uhm, my vote goes to Andreas. Although I'm a Ulver fan, as well as a Vintersorg fan, Andreas suits much better for Borknagar to me. Anyway I would love to hear the "today's" Garm in Borknagar.
Well, as for Vortex... I found his voice really charismatic and great, though I still prefer the two mentioned above. |

It's not that I don't like his voice... I liked (note the ed) it when he was in Borknagar, but when he went to Arcturus and Dimmu Borgir, it's just not as good. He's become commercialized and his vocals over produced His tone with Borknagar was his best ever. Now he might as well give up it seems, the way he sounds with Dimmu Borgir just sounds too much a like a pop singer or something D: His voice has changed, just listen to Colossus and then any Dimmu Borgir or Arcturus song with him... And tell me that it is not a bit different in timbre, not as epic sounding. Rather, it sounds weaker, and even a bit whiny...

at the beginning i supposed i was the only one who thinks that simen gets out of tune. i've studied piano and cello so i'm quite used to intonation, but i'm not infallible.
so i asked to a friend of mine who studied singing at the conservatory (but has also studied non-lyrical singing, and has worked as a singer in musicals) telling her to give me a neutral and professional opinion about clean vocals, and she said she doesn't like his timber too (her words were "very irritating timber"), and that he has also problems in intonation.... ![]()

About the video: Garm songs? sure, but he slays Simen and Mr V together, on both grim and clean vocals on those songs. He did it on studio, so...it's not fair. On the other hand, I prefer 2nd to Mr V, he is more true to his vocals and at the same time respects a little more the original vocal lines, butchered by Simen (at least on The Dawn Of The End, where he's awful). Also Mr V's grim vocals actually sound black metal, while Simen is more on the death metal growling range. -- o -- I think there's no right way to compare them, cause all has different vocal tones, techniques, range (Garm - very deep baritone vocals /later with extended range towards tenor, Vintersorg -less deep, more versatile baritone w/some extended range to tenor, Simen deep tenor, strong on high, very weak on low notes), and more important, totally different styles. While I think the only way to measure them as singers is just our personal opinion, I think it's more fair to choose 2 or 3 Borknagar songs from each guy where their vocals shine the most and "try" to make an "objective" analysis. As an example why I prefer Andreas over Vortex and Garm I'll mention 3 songs, one per album: 1- Inherit the Earth. I love the choirs that Andreas does a lot more than Simen and Garm's ones. He sounds very epic on this one, specially on the "Past, present and future" part of the song. 2- Cycled. Mr V is the guy who brought emotion to Borknagar's vocals. His grim vocals are awesome, and his clean ones are really versatile. Soft spoken, low singing, high pitched chorus, he does everything! where he shine the most is on the sentence "The boulder rolls heavily - is it in vain?"...it gives me chills every time I hear it. 3-Grains. My favourite song from Origin. Mr V really put his heart into singing (and Lars is marvellous too, as we can hear on White, my 2nd choice of the album). I dunno how this can sound, but that song sometimes - on a certain mood - touches me badly, more than a lot of doom metal/ambient stuff. a 4th track worth of mention would be Gods Of My World. Anyway, the 3 guys are incredible and Borknagar maybe is the band with the best vocals on their career as a whole. pd: My Fav Simen songs are Colossus, Oceans Rise and Winter Millenium (Universal as a 4th choice). My fav Garm songs are The Eye of Oden, The Winterway and The Dawn Of The End (Vintervredets Sjelesagn as my 4th choice).
