concerns about guitar body damage

hey

i have recently noticed the way people pick the strings by placing the last few fingers of the picking hand on the body of the guitar near the tone and volume nobs between the pickups .it appears to be damaging the finish of the guitar body.

is this a major concern ,cause it has been driving me nuts seeing other guitarists play my guitar and scratch the shit out of it.

cheers

How would that damage the finish of the guitar? Unless you have longer nails I don't see how that would cause damage? It'd be interesting to know because I have this habit though I keep my nails short.
