Bethlehem's Tagebuch Einer Totgeburt is absolutely stunning in creativity for the time, as well as pure representation of sullen emotion.
That's just one, I'm out the door to work, so I'll get some more later.

Here's a few, in no particular order:

Kayo Dot: The Manifold Curiosity
Agalloch:In The Shadow of our Pale Companion
Negura Bunget: Terasul De Lumini
Alcest: Pretemps Emerald
Ulver: The Future Sound of Music
Clad in Darkness: Nepenthe
maudlin of the Well: The Birth Pains of Astral Projection

Fuck, I have a million more.

I could probably make a pretty lengthy list as well.

Just a couple right quick off the top of my head, I would say...
When Day Descends - Discovery
Metallica - Orion/To live is to die
Opeth - Just about anything
I will most likely add more later.

Others are good, but I like other songs by those groups more.

Coy are you telling me that Kayo Dot has a better song than The Manifold Curiosity? Possibly Wayfarer, maybe The Antique, but I doubt it. As far as The Future Sound of Music goes, Ulver probably has better songs than that, but that's just what came to mind for me.

No the ones I quoted are ones I agree with. The ones I didn't quote, Agalloch for example, there are other songs I like more. All good choices all around though.

I also think all four of the Interludes on Leaving Your Body Map and Bath are mindblowingly beautiful.

my mistake sir, though Agalloch has so many great songs it's hard to pick which one.
Odal
As Embers Dress the Sky
You were but a ghost in my arms
Not unlike the waves
The Mishappen Steed

desicions, desicions.

Also I forgot to mention just about any GY!BE song
