Fille spirituelle des expérimentations baroques d’Arcturus, la teneur de l’Electro-Metal des Polonais Eternal Deformity pourrait régénérer l’intérêt d’une frange du public metal pour ce type d’essai. Souhaitant se défaire des carcans organiques du genre pour toucher des espaces colorés et expérimentaux, le spectacle de "Frozen Circus" opère un patchwork des différents modes opératoires existant en tant que sous-genres du Metal. Phrasés heavy, accents death, l’ambition d’Eternal Deformity est d’unifier tout cela dans un ensemble cohérent, dynamique et friand d’enrichissement instrumental, que ces derniers passent par le recours à une acoustique exotique ou aux machines héritées en musique de la révolution industrielle.

Sur le plan des formes, le groupe parvient à une certaine fluidité même si certains collages synthétiques ne donnent pas dans une finesse extrême. Ils s’avèrent extrêmes voyants parfois, assommant plus qu’ils ne suggèrent. Cela étant, Eternal Deformity fait preuve de vaillance, voire d’ambition en termes de mise en place.
La récompense résidera en une estime méritée pour la plupart des formes exposées sur l’album. Car pour le reste et sur le fond, en comparaison à l’œuvre de maîtres du genre (type Arcturus, pour y revenir), les assemblages d’Eternal Deformity renvoient une forme de… timidité, oui. Ne pas goûter à Arcturus avant de tester "Frozen Circus". Faire le contraire, plutôt. Dans le cas inverse, l’adepte pourrait connaître la désillusion, surtout au vu de l’expérience d’une formation dont les débuts remontent à 1993 et qui a, depuis, cumulé à son actif pas moins de quatre albums studio. Comme si la démarche, osée pour ne pas dire extrême en tant que telle, se diluait dans le désir du collectif d’obtenir un résultat le plus mélodique, voire le plus catchy possible. Un "Arcturus pop", en quelque sorte, quoique le comparatif s’avère un brin réducteur.
Cet impératif mélodique, conscient ou non, affadit nettement "Frozen Circus". Il l’apparente à un simple exposé de capacités techniques, lequel ne découle que rarement sur un vrai souffle. Ainsi en va-t-il de l’acte manqué "Little 15", reprise de Depeche Mode jouant de gros effets de manche là où le groupe aurait au contraire pu choisir de réinventer le minimalisme originel qui marquait la composition. Mais là, le groupe en fait trop. Bien dommage.

Au final, il reste sur "Frozen Circus" une musique bien jouée, peu catégorisable (un bon point) et un disque certes attrayant. Mais la réalisation de ses promesses reste en suspens, hormis peut-être le temps d’un héroïque "Thor’s Message" : un des rares titres à contenir une émotion véritable et qui nous fait dire qu’Eternal Deformity pourrait réellement épater à l’avenir… à condition d’aller jusqu’au bout de sa démarche. Ce groupe peut tout embrasser, il lui reste à voir plus loin.

Allez. Levez-vous, n’ayez pas peur.

I once read an interview with Anton LaVey wherein the interviewer asked the founder of the Church Of Satan about his opinion of metal. LaVey's response was something not unlike this: metal isn't evil; the only truly evil music is carnival music. (LaVey himself had traveled with the circus in his youth, and he played the calliope and kept lions as pets and such.) I'm not quoting that perfectly, I know, but I read that like fifteen years ago and they say the first thing that goes is the...uh...um...I forgot what we were talking about.

Anyway, since I've seen the movie Freaks, I share LaVey's opinion of circuses and carnivals. They're far creepier than anything some church-burning, corpse-painted blasphemer could devise. With that in mind, it's a shame that Poland's Eternal Deformity trade primarily in theatrical goth metal instead of something a bit more sinister, because I was hoping for some spine-tingling Something Wicked This Way Comes-referencing creepshow type shit. (When I mention Something Wicked, I mean the Bradbury novel, not the Iced Earth album.) Instead, what's here is no more devilish than the last Alice Cooper tour. It's about the show, the mood, and not about the fright factor, and that's a shame, because carnies are freakin' scary.

Mostly, as I mentioned, Frozen Circus is goth metal, with dashes of power, black, and prog, all performed with a heavy dose of theatrics. The band members go by names like "Announcer," "Illusionist," and "Lion-Tamer," and there's a whole art-rock aspect with the carnival theme. Despite that the effort is conceptual, the album doesn't appear to have a distinct storyline, and only moments like the coda of "Crime" and the intro track "Retrospection" exhibit actual carnival music stylings. (The stuttering time-changes in that last part of "Crime" are the album's only truly weak moment, since they sound more like the CD player skipping than an intentional musical idea.) The production on Frozen Circus is slick as hell, with dominant keys and solid-state guitars. Eternal Deformity is more concerned with mood than brutality, and the production reflects that emphasis.

The songs are surprisingly lively, considering the usual gothic reliance on melancholy moping (There's that power metal influence I mentioned.). These tunes are eerie but not frightening, morose but not weepy, dark but not deviant. The album starts strong with the blackened power of "The Force Of Your Heart," and treads similar ground in "So Silent." On a moderately negative point, when it all comes down, the best song here is the cover of Depeche Mode's "Little 15." (The result: I knocked a half-point off for the centerpiece being written by someone else some two decades ago.) Aside from that borrowed glory, the album closer "Lovelorn" is also worthy of mention, which opens with the album's most somber moment with some nice work by cellist Acrobat.

As with most Polish metal bands, Eternal Deformity performs their chosen style with appropriate reverence, skill and aplomb. Goth metal may not be your favorite, but it's hard to deny that these guys do it well. Goth metal is not my favorite, either, but I do enjoy it, and I'd say that fans of slicker, darker bands like Entwine and HIM would find this worthy of a spin or three.

Barocchismi sotto zero
"Più gente entra, più bestie si vedono" ricorda uno scanzonato invito circense che, nel caso specifico degli Eternal Deformity, trova compimento solamente nella scelta del leit motive del nuovo "Frozen Circus".
Un circo del grottesco che si esprime sia iconograficamente che con espliciti rimandi sonori ad accompagnare il fluire di atmosfere che spaziano dal gotico al progressive, lambendo i confini di un death melodico supportato da origini storico-geografiche di ben nota pregnanza. Questo connubio di avanguardismo e tradizione trova degno compimento in un intreccio di riff metallici e compressi, ammorbiditi da passaggi e assoli progressivi dove chitarre e tastiere intessono trame non impossibili ma decisamente ricercate. Le parti di clean voice si giustappongono a granitici attacchi screaming, il tutto corredato da una buona esecuzione tecnica e arrangiamenti al limite del barocchismo. L'intervento del cantato femminile in "Unholy Divine" e i passaggi sinfonici, nota di merito per la suggestiva "Loverlorn", contribuiscono a riscaldare le evoluzioni stilistiche di questo circo dei ghiacci che sembra aver fatto definitivamente breccia nel cuore della nostrana Code 666, tanto da guadagnarsi un contratto per tre dischi.
Complimenti a entrambi, bel colpo.

Ein aussagekräftiges Cover und fünf illustre Gestalten namens Announcer, Illusionist, Lion Tamer, Juggler und Knife Thrower erschaffen bereits im Vorfeld eine deutliche Erwartungshaltung für „Frozen Circus“. Einen abgedrehten Trip voller bizarrer und grotesker Begebenheiten, illustre imaginäre Darsteller und jede Menge unglaubliche Kunststücke erwartet man von diesem surrealen Kuriositätenkabinett. Rein musikalisch sollte man sich also schon einmal auf ein barrierefreies und avantgardistisches Hörerlebnis voller Gegensätze und Überraschungen einstellen, aber ganz so schlimm kommt es dann doch nicht.

Die Polen von ETERNAL DEFORMITY schleudern dem Zuhörer nämlich nicht einfach nur ein buntes Kaleidoskop an Geräuschen entgegen und verkaufen es anschließend als innovativ. Nein, hier entstanden echte, unterscheidbare Songs, die manchmal sogar fast ein wenig konventionell wirken. Nichtsdestotrotz scheint sich die Band in ihren musikalischen Zutaten kaum zu beschränken und letztlich ist dies der ausschlaggebende Punkt für die Qualität von „Frozen Circus“ und im Gegenzug wohl aber auch dessen Achillesferse.

Keyboardschwangere Hintergründe, ruhige träumerische Momente, polternde Marschrhythmen, aggressive Ausbrüche inklusive lautem Gebrülle und Gekreische sowie melodischer Klargesang und klagende Violinen – die Liste an Stilmitteln ist schier endlos und obendrein sind die meisten Parts auch noch mit jeder Menge weiteren kleinen Details verziert. Selbst die irgendwie erwarteten Kirmes-Sounds finden Einzug ins musikalische Geflecht von ETERNAL DEFORMITY (die übrigens ihre ersten Schritte 1993 als reine Doom Band gemacht haben). Ob man das nun Gothic, Progressive, Avantgarde, Melodic Death/Black oder ABC-Metal nennt, selten waren Genrebezeichnungen so überflüssig. Auch das Stück „Little 15“, einst von DEPECHE MODE als Synthie-Pop-Song veröffentlicht, passt im neuen gotischen Gewand prima ins Gesamtbild, weil es im Grunde kein richtiges Gesamtbild gibt.

Wie auch in einem echten Zirkus bekommt der Hörer ein buntes Sammelsurium an Ideen präsentiert. Wer keine Clowns mag, muss sie trotzdem über sich ergehen lassen; Tierliebhaber können sich höchstens abwenden, im Hintergrund gehen aber die Dressurvorführungen dennoch weiter. Und ebenso muss der Musikkonsument auf „Frozen Circus“ eine gesunde Dosis Neugier mitbringen und gegebenenfalls auch etwas Geduld – dann gibt’s auch etwas fürs Geld. Wer generell aber keine Keyboards mag, der kann sich zumindest die Eintrittskarte sparen, soviel ist sicher.

ETERNAL DEFORMITY | Frozen Circus

Dopo una lunghissima gavetta, grazie a code666 gli Eternal Deformity hanno la possibilità di raggiungere un pubblico più ampio.

L’impostazione progressive (in senso lato) e l’immaginario circense ricordano gli Arcturus, una band che sembra aver influenzato soprattutto la mentalità degli Eternal Deformity, anche se il tastierista deve più d’un grazie a Steinar Sverd Johnsen. Più che de La Masquerade Infernale si potrebbe parlare di The Sham Mirrors, perché la musica di Frozen Circus può essere molto immediata, e attenzione: non c’è alcun tentativo di introdurre l’elettronica, ma più di qualche sfoggio di tecnica da autentica heavy metal band. Non c’è Garm alla voce, e non c’è nemmeno Simen, ma Kofi sa davvero il fatto suo ed è molto versatile. Gli Eternal Deformity - attingendo a vari sottogeneri del metal estremo, e non solo - riescono nel difficile compito di uscire con pezzi facili, però non banali, alternati a pezzi più prog, però non snervanti. A proposito di immediatezza, l’ormai vecchio trucco di cromare le canzoni dei Depeche Mode funziona sempre alla grande: questa volta tocca a “Little 15”, già ripresa dai Between The Buried And Me, solo molto peggio. Sul fronte complessità risalta invece “Crime”, grazie ai suoi continui cambi di tempo e di atmosfere, sempre però poco faticosi per chi ascolta.

Un’unica piccola richiesta: non chiamiamoli avant-garde, perché compito delle avanguardie è affrettare la presa di coscienza di qualcosa di nuovo e imminente, non di risistemare con gusto qualcosa che già esiste.

Quindici anni d’esistenza, qualche album alle spalle poco considerato, poi la possibilità di raggiungere più persone con Frozen Circus, pubblicato da code666. Abbiamo cercato di capire insieme agli Eternal Deformity perché questa sembra proprio essere la famosa volta buona.




Il vostro moniker e il vostro logo ci dicono che avete iniziato col metal estremo. Siete ancora estremi, ma in maniera diversa. Com’è cambiato il vostro sound?

Abbiamo iniziato come doom metal band, ma la nostra musica si è evoluta nel corso degli anni. Difficile classificarla assegnandole un unico genere. Lo stile “progressive” degli Eternal Deformity è il risultato di ampi interessi musicali. Non ci siamo mai auto-confinati nell’heavy metal. Perciò puoi trovare facilmente diversi stili in tutti gli album degli Eternal Deformity.

Avete iniziato nel 1993. Avete la stessa formazione? Chi ha fondato gli Eternal Deformity? Chi scrive le canzoni? E i testi?

La band è stata fondata da Aro e Ryba. I componenti della band sono cambiati un paio di volte. A partire dall’album The Serpent Design sono rimasti gli stessi. Le canzoni sono composte da tutta la band e i testi li scrive Kofi.

Sfortunatamente ho sentito solo Frozen Circus, ma – girando per internet – ho trovato molte recensioni positive di The Serpent Design, un’autoproduzione. Secondo voi, perché nessuna etichetta l’ha voluto pubblicare?
Un’etichetta polacca voleva pubblicare quell’album. Però l’offerta non era sufficientemente valida. Così abbiamo deciso di autoprodurci. Difficile dire perché l’album abbia creato solo un po’ d’interesse. Direi che è dovuto al fatto che Serpent Design è uscito in un periodo in cui c’erano specifici trend nella scena metal.

Il vostro album è pubblicato dalla code666/Aural Music. Come siete entrati in contatto? Percepite somiglianze tra voi e band come i Wormfood o i Mechanical Poet?

Abbiamo mandato i nostri dischi a tante label in Polonia e in Europa. I responsi erano molto buoni e un po’ di etichette importanti si sono interessate. Code666 ha fatto l’offerta migliore.
Beh, noi abbiamo a che fare col cosiddetto avant-garde metal, perciò penso che tu possa trovare alcune somiglianze tra gli Eternal Deformity e i Wormfood, per esempio.

Potete essere semplici e immediati, come in “Little 15” o in “So Silent”, e potete essere più complessi e progressive, come in Lovelorn. Avete cercato un equilibrio tra parti facili e difficili, o avete seguito l’istinto?

Cerchiamo di essere spontanei, non pensiamo al fatto che un momento sia progressive, semplice, tagliente e così via… Pensiamo a mostrare le nostre emozioni e a vestirle col sound appropriato.

La vostra versione di “Little 15” è una killer song. Perché le band metal sono così innamorate dei Depeche Mode? Perché avete scelto “Little 15” tra le moltissime canzoni dei Depeche? Per il link con la musica classica?
Si è trattato di una pura coincidenza. Durante una delle prove della band, Kilo (synths) ha suonato un frammento di “Little 15”, e noi ce ne siamo subito innamorati. Com’è venuto fuori dopo, questo numero si è incorporato perfettamente in Frozen Circus.

La vostra musica e l’immaginario circense mi ricordano gli Arcturus. Conoscete questa band?
Sì, la conosco. Si tratta di una delle nostre band preferite! La loro musica ci ha ispirato per un po’ di tempo.

Quando i miei amici punk sentono roba progressive rock o metal, dicono “è solo circo”, perché fare l’acrobata con gli strumenti non fa di te un artista. D’altro canto, gli Arcturus utilizzano l’immagine del circo per descrivere un mondo musicale dove ti devi sempre aspettare l’inaspettato. Che cos’è il circo per gli Eternal Deformity?

Il circo degli Eternal Deformity è costituito da cinque uomini pazzi che si sono uniti per creare musica e esprimere loro stessi… è il nostro circo. E, come nel caso degli Arcturus, è difficile prevedere che cosa accadrà, perciò si può dire che abbiamo qualcosa in comune con loro…

Mi piace molto la voce di Kofi. Kofi, puoi fare il nome di qualcuno che ti ha influenzato?

Kofi: Ho preso ispirazione da diversi cantanti. Il mio preferito in ambito heavy metal – e non ho alcun dubbio nell’indicarlo – è Mikael Åkerfeldt degli Opeth. Il modo in cui alterna voce pulita e pop al growling è uno dei migliori di sempre. Mi piace moltissimo anche il modo nel quale canta Garm degli Ulver. Ogni volta che ho a che fare con i suoi dischi non riesco a smettere di chiedermi come si sia immaginato quelle incredibili (e atipiche) soluzioni vocali. Chi ancora? I Depeche Mode: Dave Gahan, Martin Gore e, nel passato, Alan Wider. Quei ragazzi sanno come fare le armoniche. Simen dei Dimmu Borgir, Ihsahn degli Emperor e molti altri…

Oggi i fan metal possono sentire un’infinità di band molto diverse, dai Sunn o))) ai Dream Theater, dai Gamma Ray ai Rammstein. Sembra che ogni possibile combinazione sia stata trovata. Avete detto che il vostro credo artistico è “ricerca continua e superamento delle barriere”, ma avete mai avuto la sensazione che sia già stato detto tutto prima?

Smyczek: È vero che tutto è già stato detto prima, ma secondo me c’è sempre un po’ di spazio per qualcosa di nuovo. Per questo noi supereremo le barriere e non ci fermeremo nella ricerca di nuovi orizzonti.

Ci sono piani per suonare dal vivo?

Amiamo suonare dal vivo e il contatto diretto coi fan. Al momento, sfortunatamente, non abbiamo piani. Speriamo che la code666 ci aiuti con la promozione, trovandoci anche potenziali concerti. Vi terremo informati.

ETERNAL DEFORMITY – Frozen Circus (Code666) – From Poland with a rather intriguing mix of circus metal and slightly grotesque industrial/gothic onslaught – grotesque in a positive manner though, kind of circus freak show waiting for the trapeze artist to fall on the share slicing guitar riffs and the euro-prog atmosphere. They lull you with their moody atmospheres then stomp you again just as you’re letting your guard down. Think early Marillion go death/goth metal and thrash about with cod-classical onslaughts and the kitchen sink and the gates of hell and eternal deformity indeed. www.eternal-deformity.com

E’ una ricetta particolarmente succulenta quella proposta dai polacchi Eternal Deformity. Giunti al quarto album, la band torna sul mercato con “Frozen Circus” per la Code666, dopo “The Serpent Design” uscito nel 2002. I loro primi lavori, erano risultati fortemente influenzati dal sound dei Paradise Lost, ma con “Frozen Circus” la proposta musicale della band polacca si è notevolmente evoluta. La capacità principale di “Announcer” è soci, è infatti quella di saper mettere insieme diversi generi musicali con grande qualità e dinamismo. Fondamentalmente i “Frozen Circus” suonano un variegato death metal melodico, spaziando tra il gothic ed il progressive, alternando il cantato pulito a quello death, infarcendolo ulteriormente di alcune dosi di black sinfonico, senza mantenersi solamente su due binari e senza innalzare alcuna barriera. Dopo l’intro “Retrospection”, particolarmente tetro e cupo, l’ideale per una colonna sonora di un film tratto da un libro di Stephen King, si parte con “The Force Of Your Heart”, un brano particolarmente aggressivo e violento sullo stile degli At The Gates, che non rinuncia mai alla melodia, con un eccezionale lavoro delle tastiere. Un potente battito di pelli apre “Unholy Divine”, un pezzo che ricalca fortemente lo stile dei Crematory, arricchito dalla presenza di una voce femminile. L’oscura “Little 15”, dai ritmi particolarmente lenti, riprende il sound proposto dai Moonspell in un album come “Irreligious”, influenza ponderante anche in “So Silent”, brano dove primeggiano anche alcuni riferimenti ai Soliwork, mentre “Crime” ed “Endless Night” (aperto dal suono di un carillon) ricordano vagamente i nostrani Novembre. “Thor’s Message” è un classico pezzo di death melodico dalle tinte progressive in stile Children Of Bodom, la conclusiva “Lovelorn” è invece il momento più alto dell’album, sette minuti di grande musica, dove la band mette insieme i vari stili proposti nelle precedenti canzoni, con l’aggiunta di flauti e violoncelli. “Frozen Circus” è un grande album e gli Eternal Deformity sono una band di grande personalità e talento che farà molta strada

It is rare that so many disparate sounds and genres are combined as successfully as they are on ETERNAL DEFORMITY’s "Frozen Circus." A song like “Unholy Divine” might be a complete mess if it were recorded by a less talented band. ETERNAL DEFORMITY, however, are competent enough to take multiple vocalists (and vocal styles), elaborate keyboard playing, crunching riffs, intricate lead guitars, and integrate them into one cohesive piece of music. “Little 15” is able to alternate softer, understated passages with bombastic sections (including some dexterous soloing). This schizophrenia, rather than be a detriment to the band, is actually part of the group’s charm and is key to their success. It gives the band a distinctive identity, separating them from the sea of indiscernible Metal acts, including many that call themselves “avant-garde.” It is also fortunate that the album has enough heft and power to still be considered Metal, never descending into uninteresting wankery or wet noodle-like Prog sections. ETERNAL DEFORMITY is smart enough to give their ridiculousness a solid base to build from, resulting in songs that are just as catchy as they are unique.

Those who like their Metal unadorned and unadulterated by inventive and melodic influence will probably overlook "Frozen Circus," and that is a shame. The entire proceedings are unabashedly enjoyable in their absurdity. The title of "Frozen Circus" becomes exceptionally apt in songs like “Crime,” as the keyboards produce a frenetic, circus-like harmonium melody. Time and again, the songs bring to mind images of the kind of insane carnival that ETERNAL DEFORMITY would likely frequent. This unifies the album into a single, mad experience, which is a rather impressive accomplishment considering the glut of different sounds perforating every song. "Frozen Circus" could have sounded disjointed and forgettable, but instead, it is cohesive and focused.

Tego się nie spodziewałem... Jako ogromny sympatyk metalowej sceny klimatycznej od dawna z większą uwagą przypatruję się każdej nowej płycie z tego nurtu. Zaskoczeniem był dla mnie jednak fakt, iż Eternal Deformity to rodzima kapela, która istnieje na scenie już od 1993 r., a ja wstyd się przyznać do tej pory nie miałem o niej pojęcia... Czas jednak skupić się na głównym powodzie pisania tego tekstu czyli na czwartym longplay'u Polaków.

Od pierwszych dźwięków intra - "Retrospection" ogarnęło mnie uczucie specyficznego podniecenia, dawno żaden krążek nie zaintrygował mnie tak na wstępie. Ta wspaniała wariacja na temat muzyki znanej nam z przedstawień cyrkowych sprawiła, że wprost nie mogłem się doczekać dalszej części. Kiedy już w głośnikach zagościł dynamiczny utwór zatytułowany "The Force Of Your Heart" opuściła mnie cała euforia. Coś w tym graniu było nie tak... Do tej pory nie potrafię jednak zrozumieć co mi nie pasowało, tak się bowiem składa, że teraz z perspektywy kilku kolejnych przesłuchań uważam tą kompozycję za jeden z mocniejszych fragmentów tego wydawnictwa. Potężne, dynamiczne riffy, ciekawy growl, a do tego genialnie użyte klawisze - oto elementy stanowiące o sile tego jak i kolejnych numerów.

Frozen Circus jest bez wątpienia albumem posiadającym własny, unikatowy klimat. Doskonale to słychać w spokojniejszym i bardziej nastrojowym kawałku zatytułowanym "Little 15". W tym konkretnym przypadku bardzo dobrze prezentuje się czysty męski wokal. Skoro już przy wokalu jesteśmy to trzeba oddać panu gardłowemu szacunek za wykonaną pracę. Bardzo ciekawie wypadają głosy na początku "So Silent", mi osobiście kojarzące się z jakąś groteskową aranżacją tematu cyrkowego konferansjera zapowiadającego kolejne atrakcje...

Skoro już wspomniałem o cyrku i grotesce. Obydwa te elementy przenikają się wzajemnie tworząc specyficzny obraz doskonale korespondujący zarówno z tytułem jak i okładką. W tym momencie aż prosi się o nazwanie Frozen Circus koncept albumem, niestety wersja promo nie posiada tekstów tak więc nie odważę się na postawienie takiej tezy, aczkolwiek muzycznie cały czas ta "cyrkowa" atmosfera panuje.

A więc, Eternal Deformity na najnowszej produkcji całkowicie zerwał z doom'owymi korzeniami na rzecz muzyki o wiele bardziej wielowymiarowej i zaskakującej. Usłyszymy tu bowiem wiele elementów znanych chociażby z rock'a progresywnego czy też szeroko pojmowanego gothic metalu. Frozen Circus to bardzo dobra płyta, która przynajmniej dla mnie jest jak najbardziej wystarczającą zachętą do zgłębienia poprzednich dokonań Eternal Deformity.

Eternal Deformity - Frozen Circus

Pamiętam, jak jeszcze niedawno zachwycałem się 'Serpent Design', poprzednim krążkiem Eternal Deformity, mając nadzieję, że chłopaki z Żor już niebawem staną się jasnym punktem na scenie awangardowego metalu. I właśnie dzięki takim krążkom, jak 'Frozen Circus', czy wydany przez Devilish Impressions niemalże w tym samym czasie 'Diabolicanos', mogę być spokojny o kondycję tego gatunku w Polsce.

'Zamarznięty Cyrk' może nie rusza mnie od samego początku, bo po wprowadzającym w klimat płyty rozmytym 'Retrospection' chłopaki otwierają 'The Force Of Your Heart' jakimś takim zbyt sztampowym riffem. Ale jak już się rozkręcą, wpadając momentalnie w skoczne rejony okraszone pachnącą orientem melodyką, to nic tylko zbierać oszronione odłamki szczęki z parkietu. A potem jest już tylko lepiej! Pomijam kwestię samego brzmienia instrumentów, ale to co dzieje się w warsywie merytorycznej, natłoku smaczków, barw i klimatu, to już nawet nie pierwsza liga, a sam czub esktraklasy takiego grania! Eternal Deformity wykorzystuje bowiem do granic możliwości środki i możliwości, które dała im do dyspozycji natura i technika. 'Frozen Circus' jest bowiem czymś na kształt połączenia tego, co tkwi w głowach muzyków z tym, co mogą osiągnąć dzieki zaawansowanej technice, mnogości brzmień i własnym umiejętnościom. 'Frozen Circus' to płyta zarówno awangardowa w treści, jak i bardzo tradycyjna w bezpośrednim przekazie. To nie tylko ciężkie klimatyczne granie, ale również (a może: przede wszystkim!) muzyka oparta na mozolnie budowany tragizmie, elementach operetkowych czy nawet kabaretowych. Być może ktoś powie, że z jednej strony drzemie w tym albumie klimat epickich opowieści Bal-Sagoth, albo groteskowa zabawa z muzyką w duchu przewrotnych kompozycji Notre Dame, ale muszę powiedzieć jedno: Eternal Deformity wypracowało swój własny styl, co słychać nie tylko w arcyciekawej wersji hitu Depeche Mode 'Little 15', ale przede wszystkim naładowanych progresją ekwilibrystycznych szlagierach pokoroju 'Crime', zmieniającego klimat, jak w kalejdoskopie 'Endless Night', operetkowego w formie 'Lovelorn' czy agresywnego i bardzo dalkiego od ciszy 'So Silent'. Mam wrażenie, że 'Frozen Circus', mimo iż nie jest teatrem jednego aktora, bo instrumentaliści wyciskają ze swoich narzędzi ostatnie soki, zwraca uwagę wszechstronnymi wokalami basisty Przemka Kajnata. Za linie dopasowane do momentami karkołomnych pasaży należą się naprawdę duże brawa.

Nie wiem czy cyrk Eternal Deformity jest w rzeczywistości zamarzniętym namiotem, skrywającym fascynujące kształty brył lodu. Ja widzę w nim nóstwo różnych barw, słyszę sypiące iskrami gitary i czuję pachnący bliskowschodnimi przyprawami dźwięk klawiszy. Mało tego, to płyta żywa, spójna i niesamowicie energetyczna, a co za tym idzie bardzo daleka od statycznych, chłodnych monologów. Kto nie skorzysta z zaproszenie zespołu, by zasiąść w pierwszym rzędzie i chłonąć ich najnowszy spektakl musi być naprawdę nie spełna rozumu. Dlaczego? 'Frozen Circus' jest po prostu płytą wartą ze wszech miar polecenia. Każdemu.

ETERNAL DEFORMITY "Frozen Circus" (Prog Black/Death/Gothic Metal)

Mit dem Album der Polen kommt mal eine ganz wilde Nummer herein. ETERNAL DEFORMITY mischen extremen Metal Richtung Black und Death mit Gothic Metal und proggen das zu einem wilden Fluss zusammen. Und das Konzept geht an vielen Stellen sogar auf. Nach dem Intro, das verquere Zirkusstimmung erzeugt, kommt mit "The Force Of Your Heart" gleich das beste Stück auf dem Album. Hier zeigt die Band, das der auf dem ersten Ohr merkwürdige Mix funktionieren kann. Die Nummer geht gut nach vorne, hat interessante Wendungen und macht Bock auf mehr. Leider kommt kein gleichwertiger Track mehr, sogar ein Ausfall mit dem Depeche Mode Cover "Little 15" als vierten Track. Hier wird's richtig gothic und das liegen die größten Schwächen bei den Polen. Cleaner Gesang und düster, gemächlicher rocken, das klappt nicht so gut. Besser sind die Songs, wenn Tempo gemacht und eine dichte Atmosphäre aufgebaut wird.

Was bleibt, ist neben mehreren guten Passagen die wilde, verrückte und bizarre Zirkusatmosphäre, die einen über die gesamte Spielzeit begleitet. Das Album macht Lust auf mehr, wenngleich ich es auch nicht zwingend für einen Kauf empfehlen kann. www.eternal-deformity.com (eller)

Alunperin omakustanteena ulos pykätty, mutta jälkeenpäin Code 666:n mukaan tarttunut Frozen Circus on järjestyksessään puolalaisen Eternal Deformityn neljäs täyspitkä. Kuvaavaa levyn tyylistä on lafkan käyttämä tituuleeraus "metal circus", sillä melkoista sirkusmetalliahan tämä paketti toden totta on.

Viidentoista vuoden kunnioitettavaan ikään ehtinyt polakkiviisikko kuulostaa siltä kuin olisi lähtenyt etsimään onnea itsetarkoituksellisen omaperäisten suonien syvyyksistä. Jääsirkus nimittäin kätkee sisäänsä elementtejä sen verran villisti yhdistettynä, että väsyneempää heikottaa. Pohjatyö on kuin syntikkavetoisesta power metalista, seuraava kerros gootahtavasta tunnelmatarjonnasta ja loppuosa jostain dark/black metalin melodisemman puolen jämäosastolta.

Biisit ovat sävellystyöltään tasaista laatua, jos tätä nyt laaduksi voi sanoa. Hitittömyys on korkeintaan tasaisesti pirstoutunutta melodia- ja syntikkafiilistelyä, joiden parissa poljetaan joko laiskan keskitempoisesti, tai vaihtoehtoisesti sopivasti reippaammin. Budjettiluokan syna-BM pultattuna sekundatason goottirockiin ei oikein vakuuta, vaikka soittotaitoa ja soundillista ymmärrystä biiseille kenties löytyykin. Tuotantoarvoja on nimittäin huonoa syyttää siitä, että jälki soi selkeästi ja lauluissakin on osaamisen makua. Näistä huolimatta itse biisikattaus tuntuu suoraan sanoen hieman pöljältä, jos ei nyt varsinaisesti aneemisen huonolta.

On mahdotonta sanoa mille kohderyhmälle Frozen Circus suoranaisesti sopii, sillä se on kuin kumartamista hieman kaikkien suuntaan, ja kuten kaikki sanonnan mukaan tietävät: kun yhteen suuntaan kumartaa, sitä toiseen pyllistää. Ja sitähän tämä metallisirkus, sirkusmetalli on, perseen näyttämistä vähän jokaiseen ilmansuuntaan.

La primera impresión que se lleva uno con este disco es engañosa: tiene un inicio con una introducción y luego un primer tema que parece extraído directamente de los discos más comerciales de Dimmu Borgir; sin embargo, Eternal Deformity tienen muy poco de black metal melódico, por más que en las voces, en ocasiones, en muchas a veces dentro de un mismo tema, tiran por ese lado de las voces brutales. Ahora bien, se trata de voces brutales en un marco de música mucho más suave que el de cualquier banda black o death, siquiera de black o death melódico.

Esta gente viene de Polonia, y mucho nos tememos que a pesar del padrinazgo de SPV no van a llegar a mucha gente, porque SPV parece ser que sólo distribuye un disco bastante decente que ha salido por un sello muy pequeño.

¿Qué es lo que tenemos aquí? Pues una formación que tiene influencias, como hemos dicho, del black melódico, pero que donde realmente se introduce es en el asunto gótico avant garde, si hay una formación de la que toman descaradamente es de los Anathema en su época de “Eternity”, sobre todo en el asunto de las voces limpias, y aunque desde luego no pueden compararse con la excelsitud de unos genios como Anathema, sí que podemos decir que estamos ante un disco cuanto menos curioso, que puede ser anuncio de futuras obras más redondas, pero que en sí mismo supone, con sus atmósferas agobiantes y grandilocuentes según se preste, una buena excusa para pasar una tarde de lluvia escuchando música evocadora, romántica y melancólica sin caer en lo depresivo

Oh Gott, was ist denn das? Nach dem ebenso pompösen wie unnützen Intro drischt ein thrashiger Bombastmetal auf mich nieder, den ich zuerst nicht so recht einordnen kann. Massive Keyboardteppiche, schrubbende und melodische Leads spielende Gitarren, donnernde Drums und wütender Gesang tragen die Hauptlast. Die Synthies schießen sogar Leadmelodien auf mich ab. „The force of your heart“ ist sehr, sehr majestätisch und gewaltig und fast schon übergroß.
Okay, diese Polen haben frech bei THERION geklaut, aber da ist mehr als nur der Ideenfundus der schwedischen Symphonicmetalstars (die übrigens verdammt gut sind). Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob diese Band Konsens oder wirkliche Genialität ist. Diverse Parts klingen nach Inspirationsrecycling.
Der Sound ist fett und wuchtig, aber er hat durchaus einen lebendigen Aspekt, ist nicht zu aufgeschwemmt.
Im zweiten Song „Unholy divine“ hat man melodischen Gesang, zarte Engelsstimmchen als Backingvocals, schrubbende Thrashmetalriffs auf Synthesizerteppich, wilde Soli der Gitarre und verspielte Strukturen mit zuweilen recht irrwitzigen Läufen, aber auch mit standardisiertem Stampfriffing. Aber gut, Innovationen sind in der Metalszene ausgeschlossen, selbst bei solch eigenwillig zusammengepanschtem Sound.
„Little 15“ basiert auf orchestralen Keyboardläufen und melancholischem Popgesang, was eine Art Kammermusik / Pop – Mix erschafft. Aber das ist nur der Anfang, denn da sind auf einmal diese typisch neumodischen Stakkatogitarren mit abgehackten Rhythmen, ab und zu auch einfach durchgerissene Akkorde. Das ist inzwischen Usus im verkitschten Gothicsound, selbst bei Chartacts wie NU PAGADI oder LAFEE, die sich ohne Verstand dieser Szene als Basis bedienen. Ein netter Popmetalsong insgesamt, der eventuell auch ohne diese Klampferei ausgekommen und dadurch sogar besser geworden wäre. Auch wenn ich sagen muß, daß das hier nicht einmal nötig ist. Gut, das grandiose Finale des Stückes macht schon was her, auf den ersten Höreindruck jedenfalls. Ich weiß nicht, ich weiß nicht.
„Crime“ donnert und thrasht hektisch, während melodische Leadgitarren schöne Melodien drüberlegen, dann kommen sanfte, sehr atmosphärische Progrockelemente. Der Gesang ist hierbei betörend sphärisch, wobei der Fronter auch zu boshaften Schreien neigt, wie man sie von den älteren Moonspell kennt. Natürlich und wütend, mit viel Charisma. Immer wieder vermengen sich hier der 90er Gothicmetal und metallisch angehauchter Neoprog zu einer Bombastsuppe, die sich gewaschen hat. Wieviel hier Tiefgang und wieviel Oberflächlichkeit ist, muß sich noch herausstellen. Ich bin erstmal skeptisch. Immerhin hat dieser Song einen zurückhaltend metallischen Flohwalzer mit Kirmesorgel zu bieten, der beinahe schon morbiden Charakter besitzt. Nein, nicht nur beinahe.
Bombastblackmetal – und Gothicmetalfans auf der Suche nach dem nächsten Spektakulum werden vor Freude aufjauchzen, aber haben ETERNAL DEFORMITY (geiler Grindcorename) nun wirklich nur das zu bieten? Artrockige Klasse der Marke OPETH blitzt zuweilen in den schönen Passagen auf und weiß zu fesseln, wird dann aber oftmals bis an den Rand des Platzens aufgeblasen und von Standardphrasen wieder in irdische Gefilde zurückgerissen. Die Polen kochen also nur mit Wasser, wenngleich das Süppchen schmackhaft erscheint. Im Bereich der Gitarrenarbeit ist jedenfalls nur selten mehr als die üblichen Stakkatos, ob flotter, ob rollend oder stampfend, zu vernehmen. ETERNAL DEFORMITY sind bei aller Kritik nicht schlecht, nur eben ein Mischmasch aus OPETH, THERION und MOONSPELL und nicht wirklich zu eigenen Ideen fähig. Man hört es sich an, findet es okay, aber man legt keine sechzehn bis achtzehn Euro, je nachdem ob mit oder ohne sinnloser Bonus DVD in der superlimitierten Digipackauflage, dafür auf den Tisch. Ich jedenfalls würde das nicht tun. Aber was weiß ich schon? Sie haben die Klasse, wirklich schöne Unterhaltung zu bieten, aber ein wahrlich diabolisches Theater geht anders.

No i po raz kolejny trafia do mnie płyta zespołu, który gra swoje od lat, nagrywa kolejne płyty, a ja nic o nim nie słyszałem. Na domiar złego jest to zespół polski, więc powinno się obić o uszy to i owo. Niestety, czwarty już w dorobku Eternal Deformity krążek „Frozen Circus” to mój pierwszy z grupą kontakt i cieszę się, że wreszcie do tego doszło, bo muzyka, jaką prezentuje ten niezwykły krążek wywołuje jak najbardziej pozytywne emocje i robi dobre wrażenie.

Nie podejmę ryzyka nazwania i określenia jednoznacznego stylu, w jakim tworzy Eternal Deformity, bo to zadanie karkołomne i coś w rodzaju „mission impossible”. Wystarczy zaznaczyć jedynie, że mamy tu kilka, jeśli nie kilkanaście różnych stylów muzycznych i to nie tylko w ramach metalu. Praktycznie jest tu wszystko, czego dusza zapragnie, a nawet więcej. Można by to porównać do wielkiego tortu pełnego przeróżnych bakalii. Jest i gotycko, odrobinę doomowo, nie zabrakło również i elementów black metalu, heavy metalowych melodii, symfonicznych orkiestracji, na siłę wychwyci się ambientowe rodzynki, progresywne ozdobniki, a wszystko pokryte przepyszną, klimatyczną, nieco groteskową polewą, która spaja wszystkie te składniki w jedno.

Już w tajemniczej, nawiązującej do tematyki cyrkowej introdukcji czuć niesamowity klimat i napięcie. Nad całą płytą unosi się ta atmosfera dziwnej, teatralnej, dusznej specyfiki, która wywołuje w wyobraźni obrazy. Podczas słuchania „Frozen Circus” mam przed oczami właśnie ponury cyrk, groteskowe maski i kostiumy. Ciekawe to wrażenie i tak odmienne od wszystkiego, z czym mamy na co dzień do czynienia. To jest właśnie największym atutem tego albumu, że od początku do końca trzyma w napięciu i nawet po kilkunastu przesłuchaniach nie męczy i nie nuży, bo ciągle czymś zaskakuje.

Instrumentarium, jakim posługują się muzycy jest dość szerokie, bo oprócz metalowych gitar zastosowano tu w dużych ilościach możliwości jakie dają instrumenty klawiszowe. Praktycznie są one wykorzystywane w równym niemal stopniu co gitary. Sporo tu pseudo symfonii oraz mnóstwo różnego rodzaju dźwięków imitujących flety czy inne nietypowe cuda, a także tradycyjne pianino. Jeśli chodzi o wrażenie ogólne, to muzyka, jaką gra Eternal Deformity nasuwa mi skojarzenia z inną polską grupą – Asgaard, która kilka lat temu zrobiła spore zamieszanie płytą „Ex Oriente Lux”. Podobna specyfika, teatralny rozmach, groteska i ogólny klimat. Dodatkowo w kilku momentach wychwyciłem nieco podobieństw do innej klimatycznej kapeli – Mordor z okresu albumu „The Earth”.

Nie jestem wielkim fanem takich dźwięków, ale mimo kilkunastu przesłuchań, nie czuję się ani odrobinę zmęczony tą muzyką, co dobrze o niej świadczy. Jest tu jakaś dziwna siła, która przyciąga i potrafi momentami zawrócić w głowie. Wszystkie kawałki są bogate w ciekawostki, aranżacyjne niespodzianki i kipią od niebanalnych pomysłów. Dobre wokale, łączące natchniony, wzniosły, czysty śpiew z blackowymi skrzekami i dziką wściekłością. W kilku utworach słyszymy też kobiece wokalizy, które doskonale partie wokalne uzupełniają. Ciekawą rzeczą jest umieszczenie utworu „Little 15”, który jest coverem Depeche Mode. Kawałek fajnie wpasował się w album i zdaje się być stworzony specjalnie na niego.

Płyta nie rzuciła mnie na kolana i nie wielbię jej, ale zrobiła na mnie jak najbardziej pozytywne wrażenie. Nie jestem fanem takich klimatów, ale potrafię dostrzec także pozytywy tej stylistyki, a Eternal Deformity zaskoczył mnie pozytywnie. Warto posłuchać choćby dlatego, że jest to zespół z Polski, któremu udało się podpisać kontrakt z zagraniczną wytwórnią i przekonać się, że czasem i tak „dziwaczna” muzyka, ma wzięcie. Z pewnością nie raz jeszcze sobie „Frozen Circus” odświeżę.

Eternal Deformity zaznaczył na przełomie roku obecnego i zeszłego swoją obecność na metalowej scenie bardzo mocnym akcentem. Frozen Crcus jest bowiem albumem bardzo ciekawym. Płyta jest świetnie zrealizowana. Brzmi bardzo naturalnie, ani na moment realizacja nie stała się sterylna ani bezduszna. Za zachowanie umiarkowania należą się pochwały. Trzeba przyznać, że produkcja jest na światowym poziomie.
Kolejna rzecz, która zrobiła na mnie kolosalne wrażenie, to oprawa graficzna krążka. Mroczne i demoniczne grafiki krążące wokół tematyki cyrkowej nie są nowością w metalu, ale za to pasują do zamysłu albumu... A dźwięki rodem z cyrkowej areny tylko potęgują wrażenie, że mamy do czynienia z głębszym konceptem.
"Frozen circus" zaczyna się utworem wprowadzającym, który może uśpić czujność i który stanowi ciszę przed burzą. Ściana dźwięków, która czeka na nas chwile później to istne metalowe inferno.
Wokalista zespołu operuje z jednakową wprawą czystym głosem jak i growlami. I o ile na początku przekonany byłem, że bez growli ten album byłby jeszcze lepszy. Po kilku przesłuchaniach doszedłem do wniosku, że nie wyobrażam sobie tej muzyki bez tego typu ekspresji.
Eternal Deformity na swoim nowym albumie serwuje nam niemałą huśtawkę nastrojów. Mamy melancholijne zwolnienia i niesamowite kanonady dźwięków. A wszystko to okraszone klawiszowymi solówkami bądź ścianą klawiszy w tle. Przychodzi mi na myśl wiele porównań do światowej czołówki muzyki gotyckiej czy symfoniczno metalowej. Jednak z premedytacją nie przytoczę żadnych nazw. Okazuje się nawet, że jeśli chodzi o gitary zespół czerpie inspiracje z thrashu, a rytmicznie przywodzi na myśl rozwiązania powermetalowe. Poza tym wiele tu flażoletów i zakręconych solówek.
Niewątpliwą zaletą albumu są bardzo dobre melodie i pojawiające się jako smaczek wokale damskie.
Ozdobą albumu jest cover Depeche Mode "Little 15". Utwór znajduje się w środku albumu, co
samo w sobie jest zabiegiem dość nietypowym. Aczkolwiek może stanowić pewne urozmaicanie.
Jako moje ulubione utwory na płycie wymienię "Unholy Divine" i "So Silent". Ale cały album prezentuje nadzwyczaj wyrównany poziom. Zarówno melodyjne fragmenty jak i zagrywki brutalne zapewne znajdą swoich zwolenników. Album jest na tyle wielowątkowy, że może spodobać się fanom wielu odmian metalu.

Esta gente viene de Polonia y en principio lo van a tener difícil para abrirse camino. Son buenos en lo que hacen, de eso no cabe duda, pero tal detalle no siempre garantiza que una formación vaya a tener éxito, y más cuando uno viene de un país tan apartado de los circuitos del metal como Polonia. Sí, todos sabemos que por allí andan Behemoth, Vader y Devylin, pero mucho nos tememos que la propuesta de Eternal Deformity, siendo mucho más blanda y asequible que el de esas formaciones de death y black oscuro, va a echar para atrás, precisamente, al público que debería prestarles atención. Y sería una pena que eso sucediera, que no os quepa duda, porque esta gente tiene cierto nivel; a ver, no son genios, y en muchos casos imitan con demasiado descaro a algunos grupos clave de la escena doom, gótica y hasta black melódica (después de oír el disco tres veces ¿no os parece que la sombra de Anathema en discos como “Alternative 4” flota siempre presente en la voz de el cantante masculino de esta formación?).


Pero por otro lado hay grandes aciertos en un disco que, sorprendentemente, ha sido autoproducido por la banda, por más que sea el sello SPV quien se encargue de traerlo a esta parte de Europa. Uno de los aciertos es la limpieza de la producción, que queda del todo patente cuando estos músicos la emprenden con pasajes rápidos en los que la batería (seguramente programada, no me creo que un músico humano pueda mantener semejante velocidad tanto tiempo, ya veremos en directo) evoluciona como una caja de ritmos que te dejan con ganas de balancear la cabeza; otro aspecto del sonido del disco que me parece muy maduro para un grupo que se supone está empezando son las voces femeninas, no siempre están ahí, aparecen cuando uno menos se lo espera, porque el cantante masculino es el dueño y señor de la banda, el que guía los pasos que han de seguir los demás músicos.


Por lo tanto, y resumiendo, estamos ante un disco bien trabajado que con una promoción acorde podría abrirse camino, como dijimos al empezar, en el difícil mundo del metal gótico y similares, un mundo donde las formaciones con chica al frente parecen ser las únicas capacitadas para darse a conocer masivamente, en eso, en excluir la voz femenina como protagonista, esta gente son arriesgados y casi pioneros, pero precisamente por ello se les debe tener un respeto mayor que a las formaciones que incluyen chavala al frente para estar “a la moda”. De todos modos, con un vocalista que responde tanto en los tonos graves death y black metálicos, como en los agudos o “normales”, con voces limpias que recuerda, ya lo hemos dicho, a Anathema, no se echa de menos la presencia de más cantantes, ni hombres ni mujeres.

Nie mogę uwierzyć... po prostu nie mogę uwierzyć, że tak dobrą, tak świeżą i oryginalną płytę nagrał polski zespół!! A nie da się ukryć, że twórcy "Frozen Circus" pochodzą z naszego kraju, a dokładnie z miejscowości Żory.Kapela ta na swoim najnowszym 4tym już albumie zabiera nas do krainy- krainy pełnej kolorów i barw,krainy uczuć i emocji..Krainy bardzo cyrkowej, teatralnej, baśniowej....Zespół u którego podstaw leży nurt zwany doom metalem udowodnił na nowym albumie, że potrafi stworzyć coś swojego serwując nam wielką mieszankę- bombę gatunkową. Znajdziemy tu black, death, heavy ,gothic, prog...-wszystko!!!!!!! Muzyka ta jest diabelnie wręcz nietuzinkowa i nieprzewidywalna!!! Mamy momenty brutalne ,agresywne , ale i spokojniejsze , refleksyjne pejzaże...Growl miesza się z czystymi wokalami, potężne riffy z wiolonczelą i klawiszami... Ta płyta pełna jest przeciwieństw ,zmian nastroju i klimatu... Jest jak ogien i woda, ciemność i jasność....Klawisze tworzą niesamowitą wręcz kosmiczną atmosferę. Na myśl przychodzą mi takie nazwy jak Dimmu Borgir,Peccetum, Limbonic Art,w spokojniejszych partiach Anathema i przede wszystkim Arcturus, głównie przez teatralność, tych dźwięków....Słuchając tej płyty ma się wrażenie oglądania poszczególnych aktów przedstawienia...Groteskowy klimat tej muzyki, partie klawiszowe....katarynka w" Endless Night"(8) , wprowadza słuchacza w niesamowity klimat "teatru życia".Zespół ten swoją muzyką bawi się z odbiorcą jak ten clown na cyrkowej scenie. Na uwagę zasługuje też sprawnie, oryginalnie zagrany cover grupy Depeche Mode "Little 15"(4)-zespół nagrał go ciekawie, nie zatracając swojej tożsamości.Posiada on mroczny, niepokojący klimat-uwielbiam go słuchać!!!
To nie jest płyta dla zatwardziałych metali- tacy nie znajdą tu nic dla siebie. Jest to krążek dla tych ,którzy lubują się w różnych pokręconych, odjechanych klimatach, którzy nie uciekają przed gatunkiem zwanym "Avant-Garde metal", którzy szukają w muzyce obrazów ,przestrzenii i ducha- tacy z pewnośćią będą zachwyceni, bo tego jest tutaj pod dostatkiem! Jest to z pewnością zespól oryginalny, nietuzinkowy na polskiej scenie muzycznej i właśnie przez to wielobarwność, wielowymiarowość tego co tworzy zasługuję na uznanie!! Polecam zdecydowanie i zabieram się za szukanie poprzednich wydawnictw tej kapeli!!!

The “Frozen Circus” album by Poland’s Eternal Deformity has been released as a self financed release in 2007, and now the Label Code 666 re-releases it, something that I consider a very wise move, so this album and band can be accessible to a bigger audience.
Even from the first notes of “Frozen Circus” the listener can get into the bands avant garde style of playing and composing, similar to Arcturus’ “La Masquarade Infernale”, In The Woods’ “Omnio” and Covenant’s (The Kovenant) “Nexus Polaris”
Through the nine tracks that the CD features, Eternal Deformity unfold their musical and songwriting abilities, that are really great!!!. Many good melodies, with many changes that do NOT leave the listener apathetic, on the contrary personally I have been wondering, “What am I about to listen to the next few seconds?” The Keyboards are the main ingredient of the music of this Polish band, although in the background, gives a very weird atmosphere to the album. The great Brutal Vocals along with the very good clean vocals and the great riffing contribute to the very original music style of the band, which really deserves a huge amount of recognition.
Another point that really impressed me is the great cover to Depeche Mode’s “Little 15” off the album “Music For The Masses” that Eternal Deformity while stuck to the original, owns the song. Great!
So all of you that you are font of the previously mentioned bands, this is a release and of course a band to dig.

Eternal Deformity - Frozen Circus

This special band comes from southern Poland and it was formed in 1993. Influenced by many kinds of music (progressive, gothic, death, doom) these avant-garde metallers make the difference and give a strong hit to the metal stereotypes.
With all the above elements, “Frozen Circus” creates an atmosphere that brings in mind killer clowns and haunted circus. Songs that constantly change from pure death metal to progressive and gothic, up and low tempos and a good production, keep the listener to his sit, till the album is over.
The Depeche Mode cover, “Little 15”, was a good choice from the band and they manage to make this song of their own by putting some ETERNAL DEFORMITY material and mix it. Finally, the lyrical themes are about emotions, sins and sadness. “Frozen Circus “ is a very good concept album that is recommended to all kinds of metalheads.

Ostatnio mam to szczęście, że trafiam na dobre, a nawet bardzo dobre promówki. Co wiecej bardzo cieszy fakt, że najczęściej są to płyty polskich wykonawców. Po znakomitych materiałach Newbreed oraz Division By Zero, które miałem możliwość przesłuchać, a nawet w przypadku tych drugich poddać ich recenzenckiej obróbce, w me ręce wpadł krążek załogi o nazwie Eternal Deformity.

Grupa powstała już w 1993 roku i ma na swym koncie cztery płyty. Ostatnią jest wydana w 2002 roku 'The Serpent Design'. Przyznaję, że osobiście na 'Frozen Circus' stykam się po raz pierwszy z muzyką tego zespołu, ale zdołałem doszukać się informacji, że styl Eternal Deformity ewoluował od typowego doom metalu do stylu, który w tej chwili trudno jednoznacznie zaszufladkować. I muszę przyznać, że jest w tym sporo racji, bowiem ktokolwiek zetknął się z nowym LP musi podobnie jak i ja mieć problem z określeniem dźwięków jakie zawiera 'Frozen Circus'. Od razu uspokajam. Na pewno jest to metal! Metal ubrany w emocje oraz klimat. Metal, któremu można by przykleić etykietkę prog/gothic, ale nie ten 'babięcy' pseudo gotyk, a gothic w wokalach bliski dokonaniom Moonspell, a warstwie dźwiękowej noszący znamiona twórczości Opeth.

Muzycy Eternal Deformity bardzo sprawnie poruszają się po rozległych skalach swoich instrumentów i słychać wyraźnie, że te piętnaście lat na muzycznej scenie nie pozostało bez wpływu na ich umiejętności oraz wyczucie muzycznego smaku. Jeśli faktycznie uciekli z doom metalowej prostoty i wpłynęli na wody progresywnych łamańców, to ta zmiana wyszła im wręcz znakomicie. Musi coś w tym być skoro po latach udało im się podpisać kontrakt z włoską wytwórnią Code666 i myślę, że tak musiało się stać, bo po nagraniu tych dziewięciu wręcz bardzo dobrych utworów w pełni na to zasługują. Jeśli dodam, że nad ich ostatecznym kształtem pracowano w słynnym, olkuskim Zed Studio, to myślę, że wszelakie wątpliwości powinny zostać w tym momencie rozwiane.

Szczerze powiem, że na początku bardzo raziły mnie klawisze. Wydawało się, że odstają od muzyki i tego, co gra zespół. Jednak z czasem uświadomiłem sobie tę oczywistą prawdę, że one właśnie takie mają być! Cyrkowe! Groteskowe, bo cyrk to groteska i chyba nikt nie traktuje go poważnie?! No oczywiście poza samymi artystami, którzy z ów groteski potrafią wznieść się na wyżyny artyzmu. Na takie wyżyny wznoszą się też muzycy Eternal Deformirty i ja wierzę w ich muzyczną szczerość. Po prostu kupuję to, bo widzę w tym pomysł na granie i zabawę konwencjami. Nie jestem świadom tego czy mamy tutaj do czynienia z koncept albumem, ale sądząc po tym, że jako czwarty utwór umieszczono tutaj cover znakomitego utworu 'Litlle 15', Depeche Mode, wnoszę, że raczej są to luźne utwory, które spaja niewidzialna nić klimatu. I to się w pełni udało, bo słuchacz nie ma uczucia, że coś upchnięto tutaj na siłę. Ja jednak zarzucę zespołowi to, że cover mimo, że udany, mogliby sobie darować, bo ich kompozycje w pełni żyją własnym życiem i nie potrzebują wsparcia ogranego hitu. Panowie Wasza muzyka broni się sama!

'Frozen Circus' to cyrk z naszych najczarniejszych snów. Cyrk, w którym nic nie jest takim, jakim wydaje się na początku. Mieniący się bogatą paletą barw, znakomicie oddaną przez wokale Przemka Kajnata oraz grę wszystkich instrumentalistów, raz straszy, a raz omamia swym przyjaznym ciepłem. Ale tylko na maleńką chwilę, bo ten cyrk bawi, przeraża i ogłupia. Mrożące krew w żyłach 'salto mortale' to przy tym niewinny skok z bezpiecznym lądowaniem na miękkie łóżeczko, zabawny klown okazuje się niespełna rozumu szaleńcem, a stateczny konferansjer zdaje się być mózgiem tego całego mrożącego krew w żyłach widowiska.

Być może ponosi mnie fantazja, ale z osłupieniem wpijam swe oczy (czytaj uszy) w ten groteskowy show i z lubieżnym, a nawet masochistycznym uwielbieniem oraz ciekawością pragnę by przeciągał się w nieskończoność. Nigdy nie lubiłem cyrku, ale ten polecam Wam z całego serca.
