Die nächste HERRSCHAFT, dieselbe Dame? Wenn Franzosen mit einem deutschen NDH-Begriff und dem Genre Cyber Metal hausieren gehen, ist erst mal trojanische Vorsicht angebracht. Tummeln sich doch in diesem Feld so einige Dünnbrettbohrer und unsere westlichen Nachbarn sind nicht gerade für profunde Elektro-Erzeugnisse bekannt. Die 4 kreativen Herren mit den natürlich ebenso kreativen Namen fanden musikalisch Ende 2004 zusammen und können bislang auf eine EP mit dem Titel „Architects of the humanicide“ zurück blicken. Entsprechend misanthropisch gibt man sich auch auf der Homepage, Säbelrasseln für den guten Verkaufszweck. Das neue Werk scheint dem Herrn Tesla gewidmet zu sein, von David Bowie kongenial im vertrackten Leinwandhit „Prestige“ verkörpert.

Musikalisch wird schnell deutlich, dass man hier nicht in den Gewässern der DEATHSTARS oder ähnlicher Konsorten fischt, es geht deutlich saftiger zur Sache. Als Referenz fiel mir bereits beim 2ten Track „Human Soul“ eine finnische Combo ein, die bereits zu Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends diesen Mix aus Extrem Metal und Electro Grundierung kultivierte. ...AND OCEANS, die immerhin bei Century Media angestellt waren und mittlerweile unter der Bezeichnung HÄVOC ÜNIT firmieren, konnten aber nie die verdienten Meriten für ihre Visionen einfahren. Diesen Weg setzen nun HERRSCHAFT fort, kombinieren harte Synthetik Beats mit derben Riffs und allen Arten von Schrei- bis Grunzgesang. Mitunter erinnert das bei den quiekigen Screams an Dani Filth, wird aber glücklicherweise nie richtig albern. Nur auf das einmalige Experiment des Cleangesangs gegen Ende sollte man lieber verzichten. Ein paar weitere Auffälligkeiten: „Nemesis“ bekommt durch die Verwendung einer weiblichen Stimme einen gewissen Ethno Touch, „I am the One“ wirkt getragener und integriert Dub-Elemente. Das Grundmotiv vom folgenden „Chaostructure“ wurde dann mal eben bei einem bekannten Electro Hit (müsste VNV NATION sein) geborgt, während „Apocalypse Child“ auf RAMMSTEIN-Flair setzt. Ein unspektakulärer Hidden Track rundet das Ganze ab.

Ohne den ganz großen Wiedererkennungswert bieten HERRSCHAFT doch sehr solide Kost für den abgehärteten Fan derartiger Synthesen und mehr Substanz, als ich dies zunächst vermutet hatte. Zumindest zieht man überwiegend die Kompromisslosigkeit dem Kommerz vor, was heutzutage ja nicht mehr selbstverständlich ist...

Suite à la sortie de leur premier EP 'Architects Of The Humanicide' et leur passage à la Java (Paris) en Mars 2007, il semblait que le groupe disposait encore de pas mal de ressources pour leur premier album. Evoluant dans le même paysage ravagé et futuriste de leur EP, oscillant dans des sonorités à la fois Black et Cyber / Indus, 'Tesla' ne sera pas pour autant moins surprenant. Au début de l'album retentit une alarme 'Biohazard' qui semble sortie de Resident Evil. 'Vaillant' , 'Chaostructure', ou encore la très électro 'I Am The One' pourraient d'ailleurs évoquer ce genre d'univers où ce mêle science et chaos. Arrive 'Human Soul' un des morceaux qu'on avait pu découvrir en live, qui n'a pas énormément changé en comparaison de 'Apocalypse Child' où les vocaux clairs autrefois samplés (voix féminines), sont désormais exécutés par le vocaliste M[z]X. Un morceau aux relents EBM, bariolé d'un metal oppressant. Le morceau 'The Defenders' sonne un peu comme un Deathstars en particulier par ses vocaux qui sont par ailleurs toujours plus variés. 'Tesla' continu dans un même élan avec un travail méticuleux des mélodies. Transition entre le morceau éponyme et 'Nemesis' qui nous plonge dans un univers synthétique et ambient mêlé de stridulations. Les morceaux restent en tête et parmi les plus grosses perles de cet album comptons 'The Grand Architects' et son air au piano et surtout 'Vortex' qui offre une sortie de toute beauté à l'album par son passage à la guitare classique et sa fermeture sur une petite mélodie assimilable à un 'Coma Black' de M.Manson. Comme on pouvait le présager cet album révolutionne et sublime complètement l'approche musicale de leur concept faisant de chacune de leur deux premières productions des réalisations bien distinctes où l'EP fait désormais presque figure d'amuse gueule.

Die französische Band HERRSCHAFT besteht seit Ende 2004, gegründet von Mastermind M(z)X. Dieser wollte seine Ideen / Theorien / Phantasien, dass die Welt aus zwei Teilen besteht Ausdruck verschaffen. 2005 wurde die Debüt-EP "Architects of the Humanicide" veröffemtlicht. dfiese mahte das Label Code666 auf die Band aufmerksam, welche einen weltweiten Vertrag bekam. Num im April 2008 veröffentlicht Code666 das Debütalbum "Tesla".

Wie schon erwähnt beruht HERRSCHAFT auf einem lyrischen Konzept, welches ich so verstanden habe: es besteht ein zweigeteiltes Universum. Die erste Hälfte ist "The Sterilized World", in welcher die Menschheit auf dem höchsten Punkt ihrer Entwicklung angelangt ist. Hochtechnologisierte Städte, keine Fehler, keine Kranken usw...es gint auch eine Art Elite, die "Grand Architects", welche die Macht bei sich sammeln, es sind wenige, wie immer.
Die zweite ist anscheinend und logisch gesehen eine Fortsetzung der ersten, genannt "The Chaotic Landscapes". Ganz wie in solch genialen Filmen, wie Blade Runner, 12 Monkeys oder Mad Max ist diese Welt die direkte Folge aus der ersten. Die Menschheit zerstört sich selbst, entpuppt sich als ihr größter Feind. Fortan lebt sie in einer post- apokalyptischen Welt ums Überleben.

Die beiden Welten werden von HERRSCHAFT mit einem Mix aus modernem Metal und EBM / Dark Electronic dargestellt. Die Musik ist steril und kühl. Was an Emotionen rüberkommt passt in beide Welten: klinisch ohne Fehler, kalt, Verzweiflung, Resignation. Beide musikalischen Welten werden perfekt aufeinander abgestimmt, sie bilden im Gegesatz zu den lyrischen Welten eine Symbiose miteinander. Harsche Elektrobeats werden mit kühlem Black Metal gemischt. Die Riffs sind simpel und erinnern an Rammstein oder alte Manson. Die Vocals gehen in Richtung neuere The Kovenant. Insgesamt erinnert die Musik aber stärker einer Band und zwar den Deathstars. Allerdings kann von einem Klon keine Rede sein, da die Stile verschieden sind und HERRSCHAFT auch immer Wiedererkennungswert zeigen.

Wer auf apokalyptische und klinische Industrial- / Elektrobeats gepaart mit gut gespieltem Black Metal steht, sollte sich "tesla" auf jeden Fall einmal anhören. Eine pefekte Vertonung oben genannter Filme wird hier präsentiert. taucht ein in eine klinisch tote Welt.

Looking for futuristic electro metal influenced by modern black metal and harsh EBM? Then look no further: here’s Herrschaft. Although the band goes by the German name Herrschaft and you can (like I did) imagine the music to be something in the vain of Rammstein, this conclusion is completely off. In fact, the band hails from France (so no German lyrics) and it doesn’t sound like Rammstein either, even though they might have a few similarities; but this however, is quite limited. No! What you can actually expect is pure industrial metal that lingers somewhere between The Kovenant, Mortiis and Samael. The vocals are raspy and distorted, sounding quite similar to that of Nagash. The riffs are heavy and the many synth effects along with the drumming give the album an eccentric touch, making it quite an enjoyable album! In fact, “Tesla” is a superb and brilliant album that is sure to appeal anyone who’s into dark electro/industrial metal.

The music on “Tesla” is rather diverse: at times it is rather extreme and harsh, at times it is atmospheric and dark, and at times it is rather danceable – as is the case with most electro metal bands (think of Gothminister, for example).
The common and generic formula for industrial metal you might suspect, right? By all means, this is definitely not the case. In fact, the album holds many little surprises.
Take, for example, “Under Perfect Control.” The track opens up with the sound of rain and an acoustic guitar, and then gently moves towards a dark atmosphere. The heavy guitars and the distorted vocals of M(z)X are quite dominant on this track.
“The Defenders” is a track that has a danceable beat in combination with many techno-like effects. It is, compared to the previously mentioned song, slightly more up-tempo. “Nemesis” is possibly the slowest track on the album; it is slightly melancholic and dark. Contrary to this, “Valliant” shows the heavier side of the band. You can hear those black metal influences I mentioned above; in fact, there’s a bit of a similarity with The Kovenant’s “Animatronic” here.

In short, this is not just another industrial metal release. It is, as I tried to show, a very diverse and interesting release, combining a dose of metal with futuristic techno elements. Released through Code666, “Tesla” will definitely appeal to fans of dark electro metal. Get a copy of this amazing album… if you dare.

A concept album devoted to Nikola Tesla, the inventor of for instance alternating current electric power and the big adversary of his former employer Edison. This is what the progressive black metal band Herrschaft from France introduce with their debut album. A concept which is packaged into a highly explosive mixture of black metal, industrial and dark electro. In 2005 this outfit already treated us on an EP named Architects of Humanicide but with this first full-length studio recording Herrschaft makes a lasting impression. One could even state that it is an album with highlights only. The album is divided into two parts, with a first half leaning towards blackmetal, thrashmetal and industrial and the second part containing more electro and EBM focused tunes. The recording contains a nice balance between aggressive sounding yet accessible riffs, electro beats and synthesizer atmospheres. Extreme but danceable at the same time. The vocals are screamed, grunted and processed by vocoders. Some songs are real club hammers in the vein of the best tunes from The Kovenant or Samael. Examples of these are ‘The Defenders’, ‘Nemesis’ and ‘Chaostructure’, of which the last song almost goes towards VNV Nation with regards to the heavy electro sequences and beats. Nothing is at it seems though, since the black- and thrash metal influences pound merciless, which makes the references move on towards Psyclon Nine. This is quite a varied and good industrial black metal release. Impressive as well since this is only the official debut album of this band. As surprise the album has an extra hidden track. Recommended!

Due mondi si confrontano, quasi conflagrano all'interno di “Tesla”. Due universi separati e spesso ostili, quello dell'heavy metal estremo e quello dell'EBM, costretti a convivere dal volere di tre musicisti francesi dai nomi enigmatici. Nonostante le previsioni, non vi é attrito tra i diversi pianeti che orbitano attorno alla stella degli Herrschaft, anzi l'iniziale diffidenza si stempera in tolleranza, poi simpatia, infine persino affinità. Un'impresa tradizionalmente ostica si traduce in un'operazione apparentemente naturale nella mente di questi compositori/esecutori che, prendendo spunto da un filone comunque fertile (metal + elettronica), finisce con il generare un prodotto ben individuato, se non personale. Inquietante ma non eccessivamente oppressivo, “Tesla” è come proseguisse idealmente il discorso iniziato dai The Kovenant, traslandolo però dentro le mura di un dance club. Come si ispirasse alle soluzioni dei Pain, interpretandole però liberando gli istinti. O, altrove, come se asciugasse il sarcasmo e la forma canzone di certi Rammstein per raggiungere uno stato semi-ipnotico. E, quando i battiti aumentano, la scelta se pogare o ballare é solo di chi ascolta.

Two worlds confront each other, almost clash within “Tesla”. Two separated often hostile universes, that of extreme heavy metal and that of EBM, forced to live together by the will of three French musicians with enigmatic names. Despite the previsions, there’s no attrition amongst the various planets that circle around the star of Herrschaft, contrarily the starting doubts fade into tolerance, then into sympathy, then into affinity. A traditionally hard enterprise becomes a natural operation in the mind of these writers/performers who, taking inspiration from a fertile current (metal + electronics), finishes with generating a peculiar product, if not personal. Anguishing but not too oppressive, “Tesla” is almost following the speech started by The Kovenant, but taking it into the walls of a dance club. As inspired by Pain, but setting instincts free. Or, somewhere else, as they dried out the sarcasm and song shape of Rammstein to add a semi-hypnotical state. And, when the beats increase, the choice between headbanging or dancing is just in the heart of the listener.

Nachdem die Franzosen HERRSCHAFT mit ihrer EP "Architects Of The Humanicide" bereits einiges an Aufmerksam und letztendlich sogar einen Deal mit Code 666 erhielten, liegt nun der erste Longplayer namens "Tesla" und damit auch ein hoch interessantes Konzept vor: "Tesla" teilt sich nämlich in zwei Hälften, wobei sich der erste Teil des Albums als "The Sterilized World" bezeichnet und sich mit einer hoch entwickelten und technologiegeprägten, nahezu sterilen und perfekten Gesellschaft beschäftigt, während die zweite Hälfte - "The Chaotic Landscapes" - den darauf folgenden Untergang der Menschheit aufgrund ihrer Machtgeilheit und einer ausgeprägten Eitelkeit behandelt.

Musikalisch bewegen sich HERRSCHAFT im Industrial- und Electro-Metal mit leichten Ausflügen zu Black Metal, EBM und Gothic und wecken oftmals Erinnerungen an THE KOVENANT und vor allem an DEATHSTARS, die ein ähnlich brachiales, steriles und futuristisches Erscheinungsbild abgeben. Die finsteren, melodiösen und auch tanzbaren Synthiesounds kontrastieren dabei mit aggressiven Rhythmusgitarren und wuchtigen aber extrem sterilen Drums, die ich als Teil der Gesamtatmosphäre jedoch nicht als störend empfinde.

Durch geschickte, abwechslungsreiche Arrangements kreieren HERRSCHAFT einige hörenswerte Songs, wie zum Beispiel das treibende "Human Soul" mit seinem markanten Synthie-Einsatz, das mit Akkordsalven strotzende "I Am The One" oder das mit CLAWFINGER-Riffing aufwartende "Chaosstructure". Einen wirklich herausstechenden Hit liefern die Franzosen auf "Tesla" allerdings nicht, dafür fällt aber auch kein einziges Stück wirklich ab und macht als Album einen konsistenten aber leider auch etwas zu unoriginellen Gesamteindruck. Wem DEATHSTARS gefallen, kann hier gern mal ein Ohr riskieren.

"Widerstand ist zwecklos! Oder doch nicht?"

Nachdem die Franzosen HERRSCHAFT im letzten Jahr bereits eine EP vorlegten, wird uns nun das erste Machwerk mit Langspielzeit serviert. „Tesla“ beinhaltet ein bunt gemischtes Angebot an Industrial Metal sowie Electro-, EBM- und vereinzelten Black-Metal-Ausflügen.

Die elf Songs – plus der Hidden Track „Uber Alles“ [sic!] – sind somit ein ganz schön harter Brocken geworden, zumal wohl nur die wenigsten Metaller damit etwas anfangen können werden. Innerhalb der Lieder spielt sich einiges ab und bisweilen wird mächtig der Stakkato-Groove ausgepackt [„Chaostructure“], doch oft stellt sich das Gefühl ein, dass HERRSCHAFT zu viel in zu kurzer Zeit wollen und daher die Songs zu überladen sind. Prinzipiell habe ich gegen gut verpackte Electro- und Industrial-Einflüsse nichts einzuwenden, zumal Bands wie RED HARVEST oder V:28 diese sehr clever einzusetzen wissen. Auf „Tesla“ tendiert das Quartett vielmehr in die Richtung von MARILYN MANSON, RAMMSTEIN, SUICIDE COMMANDO, VNV NATION [„I Am The One“], ASSEMBLAGE 23, FEINDFLUG oder frühe VELVET ACID CHRIST. Ab und an wird versucht, durch zusätzliche Elemente etwas mehr Ruhe in das Material zu bringen, was bei „Under Perfect Control“ und „Tesla“, deren Anfänge an DELERIUM erinnern, auch ganz gut gelingt. Der Gesang hingegen ist – wie beim EBM oft üblich – ziemlich eindimensional ausgefallen und gerade die vielen verzerrten und gekrächzten Anteile, die wohl den ausdrücklich erwähnten Bezug zum Black Metal darstellen sollen, sind recht anstrengend ausgefallen. Den Klargesang bei „Apocalypse Child“ hätte man sich und uns dafür lieber ganz ersparen sollen.
Textlich hingegen haben sich HERRSCHAFT ein interessantes Konzept zwischen Utopie und Dystopie ausgedacht, da sich die erste Hälfte der Scheibe mit einer hoch entwickelten und technologiegeprägten, jedoch beinahe sterilen und perfekten Gesellschaft beschäftigt, während die zweite Hälfte den Untergang der Menschheit aufgrund ihrer ausgeprägten Eitelkeit und Machtgeilheit behandelt. Spätestens jetzt sollten sich manche an solche Klassiker wie „12 Monkeys“, „Blade Runner“ oder „Mad Max“ erinnert fühlen.

„Tesla“ ist ein sehr ambitioniertes und vielschichtiges Werk geworden, das neben einem spannenden Konzept einige gute Ideen, aber auch diverse musikalische Durchhänger [„The Defenders“] enthält und aufgrund der vielen Einflüsse nicht reibungslos funktionieren will. Wer gegen durchgehend vertretene elektronische Komponenten nichts einzuwenden hat und sich prinzipiell für die Verquickung von Metal und Electro begeistern kann, sollte mal in „Tesla“ reinhören. Den meisten Lesern werden die Franzosen jedoch – durchaus berechtigt – zu experimentell, zu wenig ausgereift und zu sehr mit Effekten überfrachtet klingen.

“Tesla” è il debutto sulla lunga distanza del giovane trio parigino Herrschaft, il cui nome aveva già iniziato a circolare l'anno passato per merito della ristampa, ad opera della nostrana la Code666, dell'EP “Architects of the Humanicide”, originariamente edito nel 2006: il primo full-length del gruppo francese prosegue – sia musicalmente che a livello tematico – sul percorso tracciato dai buoni presupposti di “Architects...” (alla cui recensione vi rimando per una sommaria descrizione del suono-base del gruppo), qui necessariamente rivisti ed ampliati per soddisfare una durata di oltre cinquanta minuti.

Il suono degli Herrschaft continua dunque a rimane in equilibrio tra l'elettricità del Black Metal e le atmosfere digitali dell'EBM e dell'Electro Dark: l'eredità del Black Metal gelido, modernista, apocalittico, industriale degli Aborym o degli ...And Oceans è unita alle melodie patinate e scatenate dell'Elettronica di matrice dark: intrecci tra tastiere, samples digitali, chitarre pungenti e graffianti, ritmi sfrenati e sincopati su cui gracida l'aspro screaming del vocalist M(z)x (i nicknames dei musicisti hanno subito lievi cambiamenti grammaticali, ma la line-up è rimasta identica). Proprio nelle parti ballabili e sintetiche vi è stato il maggior lavoro e miglioramento, poiché esse risultano ora più trascinanti ed esaltanti che mai: incessanti battiti e ritmiche infiammate si sovrappongono alle sontuose evoluzioni delle tastiere programmate per far esplodere i dancefloor EBM e Metal con sonorità coinvolgenti e gelide, cui le chitarre elettriche (talvolta ruvido accompagnamento di sfondo, in altre occasioni capaci di pregevoli intuizioni melodiche) danno nerbo e potenza.

Anche il concept realizza in maniera più compiuta gli argomenti già accennati in “Architects of the Humanicide”: il disco è tematicamente suddiviso in due eguali metà dall'orientaleggiante title-track, nonostante all'atto pratico non si riscontrino differenze musicali tra l'una e l'altra parte, e solo minime divergenze a livello di atmosfere; la prima sezione (“The Sterilized World”) è infatti incentrata su un ipotetico futuro in cui la civiltà umana avrà raggiunto massimi livelli di perfezione tecnologica e sociale, poiché guidata dagli 'architetti', individui dotati di particolari capacità intellettuali ed organizzative; come nei migliori film di fantascienza, invece, la seconda parte ("The Chaotic Landscapes") vede invece la società collassare sotto quella vanità che l'aveva portata a progredire, finendo per autodistruggersi.

“Tesla” è solido ed avvincente, ed in più di un'occasione le canzoni si dimostrano straordinariamente coinvolgenti ed entusiasmanti, nonostante qualche calo di tensione nella seconda metà dell'album, in cui il sound non risulta sorprendente come in apertura d'album, ch'è invece una fase estremamente positiva, in cui specialmente “Human Soul” e “Under Perfect Control” convincono grazie al loro perfetto mix di smorfiosa melodia e brutale potenza – anche “The Defenders”, dopo una claudicante introduzione con un sample recitato, si riscatta e si lancia in un turbine che alterna melmosi intermezzi Industrial a semplicissimi ma travolgenti ritmi Dance; il tutto viene tenuto artisticamente insieme da un'atmosfera apocalittica e seriosa che impedisce al suono di diventare parodia di sé stesso, mantenendo invece un'invidiabile coerenza stilistica.
Debutto convincente per gli Herrschaft e scommessa vinta dalla Code666, per un “Tesla” che, una volta avuto accesso al suo particolare mood, risulta dannatamente piacevole.

Die „Herrschaft“ ist zurück und fordert erneut uneingeschränkte und bedingungslose Folgsamkeit ein. Mit „Tesla“ liefern die vier Franzosen eine Einheit von gnadenlos genialen Cyber Black Metal, kombiniert mit den verschiedenartigsten elektronischen Sounds, ab. Erinnerungen an The Kovenant oder …And Oceans werden erweckt.

Es gibt so Momente da man eine CD einlegt und sich schon nach wenigen Takten vor Gänsehautschauern nicht mehr retten kann. Was soll ich sagen, es ist mal wieder soweit. Bereits die Demo-EP „Architects of the Humanicide“ gefiel mir aufs außerordentlichste, doch was auf diesem Debüt geboten wird, ist einfach Wahnsinn. Martialischer Industrial Black Metal trifft auf Trance mit ordentlich Beat. Es wird munter gekreischt, gegrölt und verzerrt. Die Riffs sägen messerscharf und die Percussion knallt ordentlich. Was mich besonders begeistert ist diese hemmungslose Verachtung aller Genre-Scheuklappen und allem „True“-Gehabes. Der Opener „Valliant“ entpuppt sich als wütende Industrial Hymne. „Human Soul“ ist sehr elektronisch und kalt, während „The Grand Architects“ metallischer und organischer gehalten ist. Majestätisch böse, sphärisch und einfach nur geil sind Songs wie „The Defenders“, „I Am the One“ und „Chaostructure“, die zwar stark an neuere Samael und The Kovenant erinnern, aber trotzdem ihren eigenen gewissen Touch besitzen. Darüber hinaus gibt es Hellektro Anleihen „Apocalypse Child“, eine Ministry Hommage „Vortex“ und einen Hidden Track „Uber alles“, der es in sich hat. Mehr wird nicht verraten.

Dieser Herrschaft beuge ich mich gerne, auch wenn sie aus Frankreich kommt. Ich bin restlos außer mir und begeistert. Wo oben genannte Bands aufgehört haben, geht „Herrschaft“ weiter. Sie scheren sich in wunderbare Weise um gar nichts, sind düster, schnell und einfach nur megageil. Also dann, auf die Knie!

HERRSCHAFT | Tesla

Gli Herrschaft pubblicano per code666 il loro primo full length, che arriva dopo l’autoproduzione Architects Of The Humanicide.

La formula è la stessa -EBM ispessita col metal estremo - così come l’energia: questo gruppo sputa sangue (e circuiti) per levigare le proprie canzoni. Rimane anche lo stesso nodo da sciogliere, cioè suonare diretti e immediati senza risultare troppo prevedibili. I paragoni e i confronti sono sempre fastidiosi, ma qui riesce difficile non impostare questo ragionamento: è appena uscito Board Up The House dei Genghis Tron, grazie al quale si capisce bene che si possono saldare elettronica (la Warp esiste, bisogna averci a che fare) e chitarre senza perdere nulla in quanto aggressività pur senza rinunciare alla melodia, ma soprattutto senza mai far capire a chi ascolta dove stia andando il proprio pezzo. Per questo motivo, gli Herrschaft, così come i Deathstars e altre band “techno-metal”, finiscono per sembrare il passato, col paradosso che il loro immaginario è il futuro. A onor del vero, Tesla non è un album malvagio: “The Defenders” gioca bene all’inizio col sample vocale, trova il giro di synth giusto e cresce fino a trascinare in pista anche i morti, “I Am The One” ha tiro, azzecca di nuovo i suoni di tastiera, il riff è corrosivo e il cantante dà tutto quello che ha, mentre la successiva “Chaostructure” becca il riff vincente, con la ritmica che vi si adegua e riesce a essere un po’ meno lineare. In altre canzoni si percepiscono minime variazioni sul tema (la chitarra acustica di “Under Perfect Control”), ma forse siamo su un binario morto.

This is a trio that combines harsh black metal with electro beats and such. It’s a concept band with a futuristic point of view, inspired by movies like 12 Monkeys, Mad Max and Blade Runner. And trust me, according to them the future doesn’t look too bright… just like in those movies.

Alright, it might sound like a weird combination, black metal and electro, but it sort of works. A lot of black metal has this spacey and dreamy guitar distortion anyway (which isn’t utilized on this record though), so adding some spacey beats and samples would work I’d say. No, the guitars have a pretty basic metal sound, yet the vocals are very much black metal. Overall the thing gets a bit of a industrial sound, and I occasionally even have to think about a black metal version of the 90s hit act 2 Unlimited. How metal is that!?!

True grimm and necro black metal fanatics are well advised to say away from this, but metalheads with an open mind towards electronic music should give this a try. It’s nicely produced and mixed with enough room for both the metal and the electronics. Music of the future indeed!

A quasi un anno esatto dal minicd di debutto, “Architects Of The Humanicide”, i francesi Herrschaft danno alle stampe il loro primo full-lenght, il qui presente “Tesla”. Fascinati dalla cultura cyberpunk e da films quali “Blade Runner” e “L’esercito delle dodici scimmie”, si cimentano in un concept suddiviso in due parti, la prima, chiamata “The Sterilized World”, si svolge nel Giugno 2052, dove la civiltà umana ha raggiunto il massimo splendore, uno splendore vanitoso ed edonistico, grazie alle capacità di alcuni soggetti chiamati i “grandi architetti”, detentori di un potere e di conoscenze quasi sovraumane. La seconda parte invece, chiamata “The Chaotic Landscape”, segna la nemesi di questa civiltà, che distrugge sé stessa, inaugurando un’era decadente.
Sebbene il concept forse non è dei più originali, bisogna dire che dal punto di vista strettamente musicale questo dischetto è convincente.
Prendendo le mosse dal minicd dello scorso anno, la band ripropone la propria mistura di industrial, ebm e techno, riducendo sensibilmente la componente metallica, segnatamente black metal, la quale permane soprattutto a livello di vocals, grazie agli screams del singer M(z)X. I riferimenti sono sempre gli stessi, e a me vengono in mente ancora i Kovenant di “Animatronic”.
La sensazione che si ha, da un ascolto complessivo di questi 54 minuti, è quella di un sound curato, ricco di sfumature, che gioca spesso sui moods, i quali declinano diverse sfumature di oscurità, ma sanno delineare anche paesaggi apocalittici.
In genere si tende a credere, lo crede il metallaro medio, che l’elettronica sia una facile e comoda scappatoia per chi non sa suonare uno strumento, in realtà le macchine non suonano da sole, c’è dietro tutto un lavoro di composizione/creazione e la parte più difficile è sicuramente quella di tradurre un sentimento umano, per antonomasia analogico, in una serie di freddi ed asettici bit digitali, tale da trasmettere all’ascoltatore l’informazione primaria, il sentimento stesso.
Gli Herrschaft ci riescono molto bene, d’altronde basta ascoltare la title-track, potente, talmente potente da rendere bene la gloria della civiltà di cui sopra, e la successiva “Nemesis”, l’inizio della fine, e come tale angosciosa e apocalittica, per rendersi conto di quanto dico.
Senza contare la discesa nel “Vortex” finale.
In definitiva un disco che adempie le premesse originarie, regalando una manciata di canzoni piene di spunti interessanti e dalla capacità, non comune, di soddisfare più di un palato.

Da diese CD auch mit einer Warnung beginnt, möchte ich zum Anfang meines Reviews auch einen Verbraucherhinweis los werden. Alle Metalfans, die eine Allergie gegen eklektische Töne haben, sollten nämlich von "Tesla" die Finger lassen!!! Wer aber durch solche Dinge nicht in seinem Hörverhalten eingeschränkt ist, kann sich auf eine interessante Veröffentlichung freuen. Verantwortlich für dieses Album ist die Band HERRSCHAFT. Diese kommt nicht wie der Name vermuten lässt aus Deutschland, sondern aus Frankreich. Mit "Tesla" liefert die Truppe nach vier Jahren Bandgeschichte und einer MCD nun ihr Debüt ab und das kann sich wirklich sehen lassen. Besonders die Stimme des Sängers hat es mir angetan. Irgendwie erinnert sie mich immer wieder an The Kovenant, zu Zeiten des "Animatronic" Albums, nur noch etwas intensiver. Aber nicht nur im Gesang weisen beide Bands Parallelen auf, auch im Musikstil und deren Umsetzung ähneln sie sich ein wenig. Das stört mich persönlich aber nicht, da ich auch schon The Kovenant mochte und man auf neues Material von dehnen wohl vergebens wartet. Es wäre aber auch unfair, HERRSCHAFT als einen Klon abzustempeln, denn auf "Tesla" befinden sich viele eigenständige Stücke, die alle samt mit schönen Melodien und fetten Riffs in die Beine gehen.

Der Band gelingt die gewagte Gradwanderung zwischen Elekrto und Extrem Metal also sehr gut. Nur auf den cleanen Gesang bei "Apocalypse Child" hätte man lieber verzichten sollen. Aber mit einem kleinen Fehler liegen "Tesla" immer noch deutlich unter der üblichen Fehlerquote vieler anderer Debüts. Ohrwürmer wie "The Grand Architects" oder "I Am The One" bleiben einem über Tage im Gedächtnis und rechtfertigen definitiv den Kauf dieser Platte. www.h-noise.com (soul)

Herrschaft - Tesla (Code666) Review by Steve Green

Concepts are, for the most part, completely lost on me. So if you want to discover the parallel universes the band have created, then visit their website, which they've separated into two worlds: The Chaotic Landscapes and The Sterilized World. Me, I'll just stick to enjoying the music.
Herrschaft are an Industrial/Electronic outfit from France, and I have to say that I really like this album. It's a mixture of Dark Electronica, pulsating EBM and possesses more twists and turns than your average soap opera. If I were so inclined, which I'm not, I could quite easily dance along with this. Human Soul is a combination of Ibiza style dance/trance music and bouncy Industrial flourishes. Quite rightly, the band have included it on their Myspace page as it's one of the albums strongest songs and it's also a good representation of their overall sound.
The danceability factor is very high throughout and I find that quite refreshing, it reminds me of an extreme version of Jean Michel Jarre, with harsh, almost Black Metal vocals, just to make it sound a little more fucked up. The Defender follows this pattern to the letter, but with a strong Teutonic presence in the backing vocals. Which in turn is completely at odds with the music, but it works brilliantly. The title track adds an Arabic twist which sounds like Cristina Scabbia on Lacuna Coil's early albums (pre-selling out). Hey, it might even be a sample. But it matters not, as it keeps the album interesting and fresh. And this album does feel very fresh and exciting. Herrschaft have incorporated various styles of extreme music to create one seamless entity.

If you are fed up of the same old shit, give this one a try.

Si l'on omet les rééditions et les warkros, HERRSCHAFT est le seul et unique groupe à pouvoir se targuer d'avoir eu, sur VS, deux chroniques pour une seule réalisation. Il y a exactement deux ans, je vous parlais donc dans ces mêmes colonnes de "Architects Of The Humanicide", un premier mini autoproduit, qui fut un an et demi plus tard rekroniké par mon comparse Prince de Lu. Ne voyez dans ce double kronikage aucune faveur accordée au combo français mais juste une signature du groupe chez Code666 qui se mit alors à distribuer ce premier EP. Tout cela pour vous dire que sans savoir que j'y avais déjà jeté mon dévolu, le Prince du goûter arriva à la même conclusion que moi, à savoir qu'HERRSCHAFT venait de nous livrer une petite bombe de métal/électro totalement imparable. Personnellement je terminais ma kronik dans l'espoir de voir un premier album venir confirmer mes dires, le voici enfin et "Tesla" est son nom.

L'entrée en matière ne laisse aucun doute quant au contenu de l'album, HERRSCHAFT n'a pas changé son fusil d'épaule et continue sa mise en musique d'un univers post-apocalyptique qui lui est propre. Concrètement cela se traduit par un métal on ne peut plus empreint d'E.B.M, je dirais même que l'osmose entre les deux styles est parfaite. De ce fait et comme je l'avais précisé pour "Architects Of The Humanicide", je tiens quand même à mettre en garde ceux qui s'aventureront dans le monde de "Tesla" sans avoir au préalable écouter ne serait ce qu'un titre d'E.B.M. Le côté électro est omniprésent chez HERRSCHAFT et il ne faut pas avoir peur de vous faire déboucher les cages à miels par de gros beats synthétiques et autres sonorités technoïdes. En cela les adeptes de BLACKLODGE, IPERYT ou autres joyeusetés de la scène extrême/indus n'auront aucun mal à s'y retrouver.

La musique d'HERRSCHAFT reste tout de même moins violente que celle des deux groupes susnommés, "Tesla" est un album privilégiant avant tout les atmosphères froides et futuristes. Le groupe y parvient surtout grâce au côté synthétique apporté par l'E.B.M et sans les surévaluer, des titres comme "Human Soul" ou "I Am The One" n'ont aucun mal à rivaliser avec un AESTHETIC PERFECTION et arrivent même à se hisser au niveau des maîtres du genre, l'infernal duo mexicain d'HOCICO. Je profite d'ailleurs de cette kronik pour vous signaler et conseiller le très bon "Memorias Atras" sorti il y a peu (et encore merci Loufi).

Si sur le plan cybernétique HERRSCHAFT est irréprochable, il ne l'est pas moins sous son aspect métal. La période "Animatronic" de THE KOVENANT a bien dû marquer le trio parisien et se fait souvent ressentir sur "Tesla", pas spécialement dans la musique mais plutôt dans le rendu obtenu grâce à ce chant hystérique totalement saturé. On pourra également et bien évidement citer DEATHSTARS, qui se taille une bonne part du gâteau depuis l'absence de la bande à Nagash, mais personnellement je pencherais plutôt pour un rapprochement vers nos frenchies de THE CNK et même de RAMMSTEIN. On note ainsi la présence de gros relents de "Feuer Frei" dans la rythmique de "Chaostructure" ou bien encore du "Der Meister" dans les riffs de "Apocalypse Child".

Je ne vais m'éterniser dans les comparaisons flatteuses plus longtemps car je pense que vous l'avez tous compris: "Tesla" est un chef-d'œuvre du genre! Du titre d'ouverture jusqu'à la ghost track, tout est mis en œuvre pour vous plonger dans le monde futuriste d'HERRSCHAFT jusqu'à ne plus vouloir en sortir.

Herrschaft kommen wider Erwarten nicht aus Germanien, sind kein seelenloser Rammstein Klone und singen nicht mal Deutsch. Herrschaft sind Franzosen und haben mit "Tesla" ihr erstes full-length Album am Pranger. Geboten wird ein breit gefächertes durchwegs metallisches Sammelsurium aus Industrial, Elektro, EBM mit leichten Black Metal Vibes. Schwer durchschaubar scheint die Rezeptur, für eingefleischte Metalheads ohnehin unerträglich, werfen die Menschen aus dem Land der weich gekochten Schnecken auch dem aufgeschlossenen Musikfan mit sehr offenem Weltbild ein brutal eigenwilliges Menü auf den Teller. Die Speisekarte zeigt sich mutig, extravagant, exotisch, jedoch auch dementsprechend unkonventionell im Abgang. Innerhalb von nur ein, zwei Gängen servieren Herrschaft vom prächtig durchs Gaumenfell schmeichelnden Moshgroove, bis zum zerfahrenen Elektronikcocktail verschiedenste Welten in fast demselben Atemzug. Es scheint fast unüberschaubar, nicht zu begreifen, was die Franzosen hier in kürzesten Abständen miteinander vermengen. Die Ansätze sind gut, keine Frage. Der letzt Pfiff, die Effizienz kann sich aber noch nicht so recht durchsetzen, weshalb viele kreative und durchaus tolle Strukturen einfach nie ihre konsequente Umsetzung erleben. So würden sich Nummern wie das im Grunde geil krachende "Valliant", "Under Perfect Control", oder auch der Stakkato Brecher "Chaostructure" mittels kleiner Tunings als ziemlich hitverdächtig vorstellen. Dieser letzte Funken Können, die letzt Zielstrebigkeit fehlt Herrschaft aber auf ihrem Debüt (das übrigens ein recht durchdacht und auch atmosphärisches Konzeptalbum zwischen Utopie und Endzeit ist) noch, diese Attribute werden die Aufgabe sein, welche die Franzosen in Zukunft zu lösen haben um dort mitzuspielen, wo sie ohrenscheinlich gern dazugehören wollen: Nämlich in die Mitte jenes Kreises, den man am Konzert großer Bands namens Apoptygma Berzerk, The Kovenant, Samael, Deathstars und Ministry vorm imaginären Auge schweben hat.

Herrschaft haben einen Grundgedanken, der durchaus löblich wäre, ein Ziel, das sehr hoch gesteckt scheint. Herrschaft haben durchaus Potential, haben auch ein potent gutes Grundgerüst geschaffen, um Fans oben genannter Band zu bezirzen. Um dies jedoch restlos überzeugend rüberzubringen, um jegliche Zweifel in der Verdauungsphase des apokalyptischen Schmauses zu beseitigen, sei ihnen die Zeit bis zum nächsten Werk gestattet. Aus dieser ambitionierten Electro-Metal Band kann mit richtiger Abschmeckhilfe ohne Frage was werden…

Herrschaft is a French combo that already released a debut-maxi “Architects Of Humanicide” in 2007. With their official debut-album they bring a powerful crossover style between electronics and metal. The mix of their murderous guitar assaults and cool electronic bleeps has been well-crafted. The balance between both inputs has been masterfully executed while delivering some real good tracks as well. The opening cut “Valliant” is from start on a heavy piece of music where metal and electronics are living together. The vocals can be only harsh and perfectly fit to the music. The next piece “Human Soul” is another astonishing track with efficient electronic arrangements on top. The “Nemesis”-[song featuring some female backing chants (like a sort of lamentations) is powerful as well and brings some diversity and a touch of mysticism in the tracklist. With the song “Chaostructure” Herrschaft experiences with pure dark electro sequences and some gothic elements while the guitar adds the power! In a way we can say that the electronic parts are like the soul of Herrschaft and the guitar riffs the body! Herrschaft is a real good surprise!

Following up last year's superbly titled Architects of the Humanicide EP, the surprisingly-not-German-but-in-fact-French troop Herrschaft have knocked out their first long-player in Tesla and it’s a solid, if not remarkable effort. While the band does branch out here and there with their sound, for the most part they stay within a fairly straightforward electro-rock format with raspy black metal-styled vocals. Among the eleven tracks on Tesla there are some strong moments for sure, and the album has been produced with care. While there’s probably something here to interest fans of industrial metal in general, Herrschaft play things a little too safely to be a genuinely exciting listen.

As already mentioned, there are some good songs on Tesla. "The Defenders" effectively breaks away from the more moderately paced earlier numbers with a thrashing main riff that’s as catchy as it is brutal. It’s followed nicely by the title track which is definitely one of the best on the album, with eerie female wailing layered over a dark melody that is genuinely atmospheric. Other strong numbers include "I Am the One" which veers dangerously close to full-blown dance territory (and works), and the high-energy stomp of "Chaostructure". These songs are worth waiting for and show good promise as to what Herrschaft may come up with on future outings, though the impact is somewhat lessened by other tracks that aren’t nearly as memorable.

Overall, Tesla is an entirely serviceable effort from Herrschaft, but not essential. By all means check this one out if you consider yourself a fan of industrial metal, but don’t expect to be blown away. This band is pretty solid musically and for at least half its running time this album finds itself in the zone, but a fair chunk of it is too safe and predictable to really get the blood pumping. I would like to see Herrschaft take a few more risks on future releases, as this would certainly help set them apart from their electronically inclined brethren. For now though, what these guys have going for them is good production values, slick performances and songwriting that isn’t quite there yet but coming along nicely.

Herrschaft, à l'entendre on croirait à un de ces groupes nous venant tout droit d'Allemagne et officiant dans un style qui commence à connaître ces premières heures de gloire, j'ai nommé l'électro métal.

"Tesla" leur premier opus en titre, nous dévoile bel et bien un combo orienté électro mais surprise tout de même, Herrschaft est en réalité plus proche de nous que nous le pensions puisqu'il demeure en nos saintes terres françaises.
Mais quel est donc cet ovni musical si intriguant qui plus est a pris vie au beau milieu d'une scène locale qui se risque si peu dans des formations ne faisant guère l'hunaminité et sortant des limites de l'ordinaire !? Prenez donc comme tout groupe métal le quator gagnant à savoir guitariste, bassiste, chanteur à la voix indeniablement gutturale et batteur, ajoutez-y un synthé et un but commun : délivrer un message sur l'avenir de l'homme ; le tout avec un visuel à la modernité glaciale et vous obtenez la formation électro métal française la plus efficace et la plus recherchée jusqu' alors.

On apprécie en "Tesla" les idées qui fusionnent sans jamais se faire de l'ombre ou encore les ambiances de fin de monde où les lueurs d'espoir entrevues disparaîssent aussi vite qu'elles sont apparues.
Pour la comparaison à ce qu'il se fait à l'heure actuelle en matière d'électro / goth métal avec un Grendel ou un Suicide Commando, disons qu'Herrschaft privilégie les concepts thématiques et voit en "Tesla" un moyen universel de clamer haut et fort leurs idées sur le monde et les êtres qui le peuplent. Ici la musique sonne alors généralement moins électro, j'entends par là que les rythmiques et les plans gardent en mémoire un modèle rock et que les instruments ont su garder un son assez naturel.

Herrschaft est donc un ovni français qui méritera de se faire accepter par qui voudrait bien s'y intéresser... et j'espère que ceux-ci seront nombreux !

"Warning ! We are under attack !". L’intro marque assez bien le terrain, juste avant l’arrivée de gros riffs doublés de divers sons électroniques, qui laissent place au chant écorché du dénommé MX. C'est parti, avec ce premier morceau puissant et accrocheur, pour un peu plus de trois quart d'heure d'un metal électronique martial et mélodique, torturé et jouissif à la fois.
Il est vrai, l'electro-metal est un genre qui atteint une certaine reconnaissance, surtout grâce aux monstres que sont Rammstein ou Nine Inch Nails, mais il fait parfois un peu rire les metaleux traditionalistes, qui n'y voient que de mauvais pompe-fric tout juste bon à faire tripper les gothiques. Si, comme tous les genres musicaux, ce style atteint parfois une certaine caricature, il reste toutefois de nombreux groupes capables de relever le défit, qui consiste à nous plaire en nous surprenant; Herrschaft est l'un d'eux. S'il est vrai que l'ensemble de l'album risque de sonner un peu commercial, il serait très bête de s'arrêter à cette première impression. Car l'une des qualités principales de l'electro-metal est surtout de coller une immense claque à l'auditeur, de le faire entrer dans un univers sombre et apocalyptique, où tout est possible et permis. Et de ce point de vue là, Herrschaft réussi pleinement son coup ! Le meilleur exemple est sans doute le très dansant "Human Soul", jouissif à souhait, ou un "The Defenders" bien puissant et rentre-dedans, après une intro plutôt glauque... Mais, et c'est là qu'on reconnaît qu'il s'agit d'un bon groupe, Herrschaft s'amuse aussi à nous surprendre, comme en ajoutant une guitare sèche et des samples de vent entre les 3ème et 4ème titres... moment calme et triste, qui n'est pas sans rappeler les "ballades" du sieur Marilyn Manson sur Mechanical Animals ou Holy Wood. C'est d'ailleurs plutôt du Révérend, ou de CNK, que je rapprocherais le groupe français, de part le rendu à la fois limite pop et expérimental, "in your face" et réfléchi, en bien plus électronique.

Car les machines restent très présentes dans Tesla, si bien qu'on est parfois presque plus proche d'une sorte de techno malsaine et puissante que de metal ("The Defenders", "I Am The One"), ou du moins d'un electro-goth qui n'est pas sans rappeler des groupes comme Das Ich. A compter encore avec un chant plutôt agressif (de ce point de vue là, on est loin des gothiqueries à la Deathstars !), qui évoque autant la scène electro-goth que le black metal industriel (Aborym, etc), mais qui donne un très bon rendu, touchant et flippant. Le côté technoïde est surtout présent sur des passages comme l'intro de "I Am The One", un tube en puissance. Quant à la puissance rammsteinesque, on la retrouve par exemple sur "Apocalypse Child", avec sa rythmique sonnant très germanique (en moins lourd, quand même !). C'est aussi dans ce morceau qu'apparaissent des voix claires, vraiment très réussies...

Alors c'est vrai, tout ça peut sonner comme étant calibrer pour faire danser les goths en boîte de nuit, avec ce côté jouissif, puissant, tout en restant tristounet et pessimiste, avec les habituels titres plus calmes ("Nemesis", "Under Perfect Control"), qui permettent de souffler tout en pleurant sur notre sort... Mais, avouons-le, c'est ce qu'on aime dans ce genre de musique !! Car s'il est vrai qu'Herrschaft cultive un arrière-fond glauque et dérangeant, leur musique est surtout très accrocheuse et facile d'accès. Les esprits chagrins pointeront du doigt l'aspect commercial de la chose, les autres diront que Tesla peut bien devenir une pierre angulaire d'un genre de musique qui se cherche encore... Après tout - en tous cas de mon point de vue - il est plus agréable d'entendre un album qui sonne un peu commercial, mais qui est jouissif et plaisant, plutôt que de se farcir un truc beaucoup trop sombre et expérimental, qui ne peut plaire qu'à un nombre restreint d'initiés. De ce côté là, Herrschaft réussi tout à fait à intégrer quelques touches personnelles à sa musique, tout en restant très facile d'accès et très accrocheur.
