RAIN bildades på det glada 80-talet men formades till vad det är idag 1998, sedan dess har man turnerat flitigt, spelat in flertalet fullängdare och gjort sig ett namn i Europa. Den nya skivan ”Dad is Dead” har man spelat in i L.A. och låtit Eddy Schreyer, känd för att ha jobbat med namn som bl.a. Alice in Chains och Queen, skruva på plattan. Trots uppenbara framgångar har jag missat RAIN fram tills nu så det ska bli intressant med en ny bekantskap.

RAIN ska enligt promobladet vara ett av världens mest genuina band spelandes Heavy Metal ’n roll och skivan ska få lyssnaren att head banga, ha vilt sex och dricka för mycket alkohol. Låter ju bra i och för sig men vari ligger det genuina frågar jag mig. Namnet RAIN känns ju inte direkt heller fantasifullt och är ganska oinspirerande. Så omslagspappret på paketet RAIN verkar inte lovande, men nu är det musiken som jag ska recensera och förhoppningsvis har den mer att erbjuda. Musikstilen som RAIN spelar är klassisk 80-tals hårdrock som man lätt känner igen, här står den riffbetonade, refrängglittrande och opoetiska rock ’n roll känslan i fokus. Det handlar om att inte bry sig så jävla mycket, leva livet och göra det man går igång på. Det är i alla fall vad jag tänker på när jag upplever konceptet RAIN. Men återigen frågar jag mig vart det genuina har tagit vägen, jag hittar ingenting med RAIN som är annorlunda, spännande eller chockerande. Musiken är inte dålig, bara trygg och förutsägbar. Jag förstår dock att bandet har en publik då musiken är lättsmält men det är nog det mest positiva jag kan få ur mig och då gillar jag traditionellt den här genren.

RAIN blir ingen obehaglig upplevelse men knappast någon som jag kommer att minnas, tyvärr. Mycket hjärta räcker inte för mig i det här fallet, ska RAIN bli något att räkna med får man ta att börja använda fantasin och inte använda sönder redan slitna gamla Heavy Metal trasor.

RAIN was formed in the 80’s but became what it is today in 1998, since then they have toured a lot, recorded several full-length album and made their self a name in Europe. The new album “Dad is Dead” they have recorded in L.A. and invited e.g. Eddy Schreyer, known for have been worked with names like Alice in Chains and Queen, to master the piece. Despite all this I have managed to miss out on RAIN until now and it will be interesting with a new acquaintance.

RAIN are, according to the promo-note, one of the worlds most genuine bands which plays a Heavy Metal ‘n roll and the album are supposed to make the listener want to head bang, have wild sex and drink too much alcohol. Sounds good, but where in lies the genuine. The name RAIN isn’t very colourful and inspiring either. So, the paper around the package RAIN doesn’t look exciting but maybe the content is. The music RAIN plays is easy to recognize and have its roots in the classic 80’s hard rock; here the riff accentuated, sparkling chorus and none-poetic rock ‘n roll are in focus.
It’s all about not give a shit; live life and do what makes you feel good. Anyway it’s what comes to mind when I’m experience the concept RAIN. But ones again I ask my self where the genuine is, I can’t find anything that is different, exciting or chocking with RAIN. The music isn’t bad, just safe and predictable. Though I can understand that the band has an audience when the music is easy listened, but that’s the most positive I can say about this album and I like this genre traditionally.

The first meeting with RAIN isn’t unpleasant but I can’t say I will remember it, sadly. Much heart isn’t just enough in this case, if RAIN is gonna be something you can count on they have to start using their imagination and stop trash already worn out Heavy Metal racks.

It´s quite rare that an Italian band comes that high up North, especially during such rough winter weather, when at the same time it´s + 27 C in Bologna. Rain impressed with great sound and 80s Metal mixing elements of Maiden/Priest and lotsa party, and singer Francesco´s voice even reminds of Bruce Dickinson. The Finns were excited but kept a certain distance to the stage until half of the show was over. The Italians focused on their „Dad is Dead“ CD, besides the title track they played e.g. „Last Friday“ or „Bang Bus“. And still the audience screamed for more – a very successful Finland premiere!

Nima: De geschiedenis van deze band gaat terug naar 1980 en hoewel ze buiten hun thuisbasis Italië nog weinig naamsbekendheid hebben nemen ze om de vier jaar trouw een cd uit. Veelal is het spul behoorlijk gelimiteerd en vooral bedoeld voor de trouwe fanbase, ook wel The Raincrew genaamd, en hebben ze in Italië en semi-legendarische status.

Eerlijk gezegd ben ik niet bekend met de band's eerdere werk en is 'Dad Is Dead' mijn eerste kennismaking met deze heren. En ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat het zeker geen onaangename is. De smerige rock n' roll van deze seksverslaafde alcoholisten met de daarbij behorende teksten (en dus ook een flinke dosis) humor is namelijk erg pakkend en een zeker ook vermakelijk. De strakke riffs en de rauwe zang zijn over het algemeen prima te verteren en zorgen voor een feestelijke sfeer. Uiteraard is het allemaal geen moment origineel of vernieuwend en je hoort de invloeden van Motörhead, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo in een pittig heavy metalsausje duidelijk terug in de muziek. Ze hebben de nummers echter een lekker eigen draai gegeven waardoor ik de band niet direct ergens mee kan vergelijken. Een meer recente vergelijking zou met de Duitse collega's van Gun Barrel zijn, die deze maand ook met een prima komen.

Maar goed, hoewel de algemene indruk over de elf eigen songs en een zeer geslaagde versie van The Cult's 'Rain' (met gastoptredens van Steve Sylvester en Freddy Delirio van de Italiaanse shock-rockers Death SS) erg positief is moet ik uiteraard ook de nodige kanttekeningen plaatsen. De songs tonen onderling maar weinig verschillen en zijn dus individueel moeilijk uit elkaar te houden. Daardoor is ook de speeltijd van ruim een uur net iets te lang. Maar al met al is dit gewoon een heerlijk rock n' roll plaatje, die vooral op feestjes of in de kroeg goed aanslaat.

Usually their albums were quite limited and only meant for their loyal fan base, or the Raincrew as they call it, and have a semi-legendary status in Italy.

I must admit that I'm not familiar with this band's earlier album, so 'Dad Is Dead' is my first acquaintance with this band. But I also must admit that it's a rather pleasant acquaintance. The sleazy rock n' roll of these sex-addicted alcoholics with the fitting lyrics (which goes hand in hand with lots of humour) is rather catchy and highly pleasant. The tight riffing the rough vocals are easy listening in general and are perfect for partying. Naturally none of the musical ideas are original or renewing and the influences of Motörhead, AC/DC, Rose Tattoo in a tasty heavy metal cream are clearly audible. But they have managed to give a certain drive to the songs, which makes them hard for immediate comparison with other bands. A more recent comparison that fits the band is their German colleagues of Gun Barrel, who by the way have also released a great album this month.

But anyway, the general impression on the eleven songs and the highly acceptable version of The Cult's 'Rain (with guest appearances of Steve Sylvester en Freddy Delirio of the Italian shock-rockers Death SS) is highly positive, but still I have some points of criticism. The fact is that the songs sound much alike, which makes it hard to separate them individually. Due to this point a playing time of nearly an hour is also a bit too long. But the fact also remains that 'Dad Is Dead' is a tasty rock n' roll album, which is perfect for parties and for the local heavy metal bar.

I bolognesi Rain sono uno dei gruppi più longevi dell’HM tricolore. Nati nel 1980, hanno passato gli anni ruggenti della Nwoihm a suon di demo fino ad arrivare alla prima pubblicazione semi ufficiale nel 1986, con l’album The Rain is Coming. La classic line-up dei felsinei annoverava Alessandro “Tronco” Tronconi alla voce, Luciano Tattini e Alessio “Amos” Amorati alle chitarre, Gianni “Gino” Zenari al basso e Andrea “Mario” Baldi alla batteria. Da lì in avanti centinaia di concerti – dalle arene ai pub di periferia - , migliaia di chilometri macinati in Italia e in Europa, una manciata di dischi e miriadi di mani strette. Nel 2003 l’uscita dell’album della maturazione: Headshaker. Un crogiuolo di HM duro, massiccio e potente in mezzo ai denti, spalmato su undici tracce, uno di quei dischi che ogni defender tiene a portata di mano per sentirselo di tanto in tanto. Nel 2005 Tattini lascia la band così come qualche mese fa abbandona lo storico “Tronco” e la line-up si assesta con Marco Rizzi alla chitarra e Francesco Grandi alla voce, accanto ai tre monumenti Amos, Gino e Mario.
Aprile 2008: dopo anni di attesa esce finalmente l’ultima fatica dei Rain, dal titolo Dad is Dead e dalla copertina intrigante, fuori dai soliti cliché.
Si parte con 8 Bar, un pezzo Rain al 100%, la giusta prosecuzione di Headshaker: cori carichi senza esagerare, soli di chitarra a metà brano a profusione e finale al Metallo urlato. Blind Fury passa senza impressionare ma è con Mr. 2 Words che torna a dettare legge la cara, sana, Nwobhm: voce rarefatta e poi esplosione di cori che faranno la gioia delle prime file nel prossime (tantissime), date live in programma. Love in the Back fuoriesce direttamente dalla Loro cantina di New York… ops, dalla leggendaria “Fossa”, infatti i Rain si divertono a fare i Twisted Fuckin’ Sister più arrabbiati, come da titolo, abbastanza eloquente… Rain Are Us è ancora Usa oriented, nella fattispecie la “Hard Side” di Los Angeles anni Ottanta, grazie al refrain sussurrato - di grande impatto - e ai riff di chitarra centrali stavolta sfacciatamente British style su contesto americano. Red Kiss non lascia traccia e si arriva a The Party, ovvero il territorio di battaglia preferito dai cinque bolognesi, rock’n’roll a manetta nella tradizione di quella che è la canzone simbolo dei Rain: Only for the Rain Crew contenuta in Headshaker. Già mi vedo Amos in posa plastica tamarra che ne spara i riff di chitarra con il deretano a sbalzo sul finestrino della mitica Ford Capri. Sicuramente uno degli highlight di Dad is Dead.
Ancora grandi asce aprono Last Friday, il brano numero otto, un’altra perla di British HM morbido con cori a la Wrathchild. Dad is Dead è la Motorcycle Man dei Rain: chitarre come rasoi proprio come i grandissimi Oliver/Quinn di Saxoniana memoria. In Swan Tears i bolognesi incontrano i Van Halen di fine anni Settanta, eccezion fatta per le voci effettate mentre The Reason è Dokken periodo Eighties ipervitaminizzati con cori classici “Rain”. Rock’n’roll puro a la Guns n’ Roses nella struttura portante di Bang Bus, un brano che riesce a fondere cori a la Motley Crue con riff granitici… buon Jack Daniel’s a tutti! Si chiude in modo sfrontato per un album altrettanto sfacciato: Rain è la riuscitissima cover del brano dei Cult, con tanto di ospiti illustri come Steve Sylvester e Freddy Delirio dei Death SS… no other words…
Dad is Dead è un album che suona fresco, che riesce a trasmettere la voglia di suonare e di divertirsi dei cinque Rain, e tanto basta. Francesco “Il Biondo” Grandi non riesce a far dimenticare un grandissimo interprete come “Tronco”, ma si trattava di un’impresa improba per moltissimi altri. Il nuovo singer è meno dotato come estensione ma sicuramente più acido nella timbrica, peculiarità che lo fa risultare perfetto nei brani più goderecci e meno diretti. Produzione assolutamente in linea con lo spirito del prodotto.

Devo dire con sincerità di non essere del tutto soddisfatto da questo nuovo cd dei bolognesi Rain, una delle icone del tradizionale heavy metal italiano. Le defezioni di Lucio Tattini, ora nei Tarchon Fist, e soprattutto dell’eccezionale singer “Tronco” Tronconi si fanno sentire chiaramente, e per quanto i nuovi arrivati non deludano certo le aspettative, il livello qualitativo del songwriting mi sembra un po’ inferiore rispetto al precedente “Headshaker” (in archivio la recensione). È come se la band avesse perso mordente, coraggio e spontaneità: le tredici composizioni di questo “Dad is Dead”, forse complice anche una produzione paradossalmente troppo pulita, graffiano troppo poco rispetto a brani come appunto “Headshaker” o “Only for the Rain Crew” (entrambe dall’album precedente). Non mancano i ritornelli indovinati (come quello di “8 Bar”) e le canzoni da headbanging (“The Reason”), ma ci sono anche brani decisamente poco ispirati (“Mr. 2 Words”, la ripetitiva “Last Friday”, la debole “Swan Tears”) oppure troppo “tranquilli”, quasi al confine con l’hard rock, che in un album dei Rain c’entrano poco e niente (“Rain are us”). Non credo ci troviamo di fronte ad una sorta di cambiamento stilistico da parte dei Rain, che continuano ad incarnare l’ideale “sesso birra e rock’n’roll” sia nell’immagine che con i testi: direi quindi che i nostri risentono semplicemente del difficile momento passato negli scorsi due anni, e che saranno certamente in grado di risollevarsi. Intanto li aspetto al varco per una delle numerose date live che accompagnano quest’uscita discografica non eccellente. Nella cover finale dei The Cult “Rain” troviamo anche Steve Sylvester e Freddy Delirio.

Rain, pioggia. Ma non piove certo sulla band italiana che, forte di una nuova formazione, di un nuovo disco e di un nuovo contratto discografico, si ripresenta all’attenzione di tutti i rocker ed headbanger della penisola. Heavy metal o hard rock? La domanda, per certi versi legittima, appare in questo caso alquanto oziosa. Il gruppo infatti ha imbracciato gli strumenti già dagli anni ’80 e, nel corso di questi lunghi anni di carriera, ha saputo procedere a cavallo dei due generi, secondo un’inveterata tradizione che procede dai Judas Priest in avanti. Esperienza e consapevolezza che dominano la scena, quindi, ma anche la giusta attitudine ed energia nell’interpretare l’immortale canovaccio rock’n’roll fatto di donne, birra, macchie veloci e chitarre distorte. Un copione che ha conquistato anche l’animo di Steve Sylvester e Freddy Delirio dei Death SS, che hanno accettato entrambi di buon grado di partecipare alla festa, donando il loro contributo ad una cover dei The Cult non scelta a caso: “Rain”! L’obiettivo, si capisce, è quello di colpire il palco con più energia possibile, ed è per questo che “Dad Is Dead” può essere considerato (anche) come il preludio al vero banco di prova per una band dell’indole dei Rain: il concerto dal vivo. Le canzoni nuove, c’è da crederci, renderanno alla perfezione.

Es ist für mich immer wieder sehr verwunderlich, dass es Bands gibt, die schon so lange im Geschäft sind, von denen ich aber bisher noch nicht mal ansatzweise etwas gehört habe. So zum Beispiel auch von den Italienern RAIN, die mit "Dad Is Dead" nicht nur ihr mittlerweile siebtes Album vorlegen, sondern vor ein paar Jahren auch auf dem "Keep It True" und "Metal Camp" rocken durften. Schande über mich, denn diese Formation hätte eigentlich schon länger auf meinem Bildschirm sein müssen.

Auf ihrem neuen Album präsentieren uns RAIN Heavy Metal in seiner Reinkultur. Es fühlt sich an wie eine Zeitreise in die goldenen Achtziger. Dabei sind die Italiener eine Mischung aus MÖTLEY CRÜE und Konsorten sowie den Briten SAXON, was einen heißen Mix aus Rotz-Rock-Attitüde und kraftvollen Riffs verursacht. Die Musik verspricht endlose Partys, heiße Frauen, schräge Klamotten, viel Alkohol und den Geruch von Revolution. Dabei könnte das Quartett rein musikalisch ebenso auf Bikerfesten wie auf Metalevents bestehen, denn "Dirty Rock'n'Roll" geht immer.

Mit '8 Bar' und 'Blind Fury' starten die Italiener recht flott und furios in ihr neues Album. Sie legen damit ein Tempo vor, das sie im weiteren Verlauf nur noch sehr selten anschlagen ('Dad Is Dead'). Auch wenn die restlichen Songs dann eher etwas rockiger und dreckiger daher kommen, bleiben RAIN stets hart, was vor allem an den lauten und sehr direkten Gitarren liegt. Sie besitzen zwar nur eine leichte AC/DC-Verzerrung, doch diese brät und rockt wie die Hölle. Musikalisch verzichtet die Band auf Spielereien und konzentriert sich in allen dreizehn Songs lieber auf klassische Riffs, einen anständigen Groove, kurze prägnante Soli und einen rohen ungeschliffenen Gesamteindruck. Ab und an schaffen sie die Kurve nicht ganz und verfangen sich etwas in Klischees ('Mr. 2 Words', 'Love In The Back'), was aber zum Glück nur kurze Ausrutscher bleiben.

Im letzten Jahr wurde mit Francesco Grandi der Gesangsposten neu besetzt. Da ich den Vorgänger nicht kenne, kann ich hier leider keine Vergleiche ziehen, aber der neue Mann macht auf "Dad Is Dead" eine sehr gute Figur. Er klingt ein wenig wie Biff Byford, besitzt das notwendige Kratzen in der Stimme und überzeugt darüber hinaus mit gelegentlichen Schreien aus der Metalkiste, die sofort die geballte Faust hervorrufen. An Francesco werden sich bestimmt die Geister scheiden, denn entweder man liebt oder man hasst ihn. Ich finde aber, sein Gesang passt sehr gut zur Musik der Italiener.

Die Produktion ist ebenfalls mehr als amtlich, knallt gehörig aus den Boxen und ist differenziert, besitzt trotzdem noch genügend Ecken und Kanten, die das Album lebendig wirken lassen. Ich möchte jetzt nicht sagen, dass wir es hier mit einem Überalbum zu tun haben, denn dafür ist noch zu viel vorhersehbares, sind noch zu wenige große Refrains und vor allem Abwechslung drauf. Doch das Album rockt die kompletten 57 Minuten und der Hörer hat reichlich Spaß dabei. Damit dürften RAIN ihre Mission zumindest erfüllt haben. Wer auf kernigen Metal mit Party-Rock-Attitüde steht, sollte hier mal ein paar Minuten investieren.
