Trackliste:
01. Exile's Journey
02. A Witness To The Passing Of Aeons
03. Colossal Voids
04. As Buried Spirits Stir
05. The Warren
06. Lashed By Storm
07. Bereft Spielzeit: 00:58:50

Line-Up:
Grungyn - Bass, Cries

FEN "The Malediction Fields" (Atmosphärischer Black Metal)
(Code 666)

Fen - The Malediction Fields (Code666 Music)

By: Tom Findlay

[8.5/10]

If you have heard Fen, no doubt you are salivating at the prospect of the first full-length, and yes it is here. The enormous promise that was show at demo stage and on the Ancient Sorrow EP has come to fruition indeed.

The sorrow generated is sincere and viscerally autumnal, the black metal aspect of proceedings one could liken to Drudkh, Wolves in the Throne Room and possibly an air of Forgotten Tomb. However, here Fen have developed a majestic and powerful individual signature that permeates the record. What is notable is the bass; ever present and adding its charming warmth to proceedings.

There is an underlying tranquility to both harsher and calmer passages, coupled with a note of sadness. You may think this sounds like the hackneyed ramblings of a pretentious toff at a wine-tasting, but the application of these elements to their raw metal is so delicate, it suggests a symbiotic and ancient connection with Mother Nature.

A sense of dew coated mystery and occult allure surrounds these recordings, many creep around at mid-tempo and weave their tapestry with waves of the wand. As is necessary to spellbind within this sub-genre the songs are long and consist of many changes of pace and tone, but all interwoven seamlessly. The competence of the early Opeth albums comes to mind.

First listen of “Colossal Void” will raise a few question marks no doubt, as one would be forgiven for expecting an onslaught of black-metal bleakness, but this song cleverly evolves from a lounge-prog sounding first half into a mix between the two styles during the latter, which some will find hard to stomach as some of the cleaner vocals are a little weak and the notes aren’t quite hit.

The vision and scope of The Malediction fields is encourageable, carried out with intelligent timing and luster. A brave and well realized and constructed effort - despondency, British style and done with flair

score: 4/5

Label: code666 Release: 16.01.2009

METAL MIRROR

FEN
The Malediction Fields
7 Songs (58:33) / erschienen am 28.1. (Aural / SPV)

7 / 10 (Dorian Gorr)

On their MCD Ancient Sorrow, Fen managed to blend post-rock atmospherics with a Black Metal miasma to create an album filled with promises of what might come. With the debut The Malediction Fields they manage to deliver on that promise, expanding their style to incorporate more spacey, ambient elements and dynamics, delivering a soundscape dense with melody and aural theatrics.

Album opener "Exiles Journey" begins with an acoustic guitar that floats its simple melody into a haze of distortion and smokey atmosphere that is buoyed with spacey keys and lingering, haunting melodies. It is an eclectic song that sets the tone for the album very nicely, switching between the calm, floating interlude-style atmospherics and the rough explosions of distortion that mark the much heavier sections. Fen strives to weave an atmosphere that switches from dreamy melancholy, through an edgy menace of flickering shadows at the periphery of your vision, to an uplifting swell that instills a nameless longing, and it is these elements that take the fore, crafting an album that simultaneously floats you in space and suffocates you with its claustrophobic feel. "A Witness to the Passing of Aeons" captures these feelings variously during its seven minute run time, switching seamlessly between more aggressive riffs with raspy vocals and swelling chord progressions and arpeggio style open chords under clean vocals. The approach comes off as a mix of Wolves in the Throne Room and Alcest, just like the debut, with a healthy addition of Agalloch-styled acoustic elements such as those found on their White or Grey EPs. "As Buried Spirits Stir" continues in the same spirit but picks the pace up dramatically with a most welcome wake up call after the dreamy trance induced by the songs so far, and it works really well, keeping the theme and feel of the album to date, but really picking up the aggression. It is however, the 12 minute closer "Bereft" which is the star of the show, showing off the depth of song writing and musical conversation between the instruments that is both exhilarating and exhausting, and serving to draw you hand out to press that play button again if only to be cradled in the ethereal palm of Fen's more serene moments.

Whereas on their debut MCD Fen's clean vocals were mere flirtations via some backing oohh's and ashh's, on this album The Watcher takes it further with a good amount of clean vocals. They are really quite hit and miss, and while the hits add immensely to the atmosphere of airy melancholy that pervades the album, the misses are not deal breakers but you notice them float off key on occasion. It is the vocals of bass player Grungyn that will make you cringe in places as he takes the lead on the serene "Colossal Voids" a track that incorporates a heavy "shoegaze" feel, but suffers from his off key caterwauling, especially on the chorus. Luckily we get some harsher rasping and growling to save the track and move it in a slightly menacing direction as both vocalists work together.

With The Malediction Fields, Fen has managed to evolve the sound from Ancient Sorrow into a more mature style, and manage to come off sounding unique. There is no other band that is currently doing this blend of styles, and Fen manages to do it extraordinarily well, crafting an enveloping atmosphere that effortlessly evokes an emotional response via the memorable melodies and songwriting. Black Metal fans whose tastes run to the atmospheric or experimental will find much to enjoy here, as will fans of all "post" genres, but the more hard line metal fans may find Fen's airy ambience a bit much though as there is little traditional metal on display here. Either way you should take the time to give this album a try because you might just discover something magical.

From vs-webzine (France):

Fen - the British word for swamp - suggests a band with a sludgy, crawling sound, but that’s not the case with this UK-based act. Instead, this combines dry, murky black metal with buoyant melodies and expansive moodscapes to create a dynamic and often mesmerizing experience. Essentially, Fen comes off like the British version of Agalloch, and I’d go as far to say that The Malediction Fields is better than that band’s recent efforts.
Opener “Exile’s Journey” is aptly named, as it - and then rest of the lengthy album that follows - takes you on an extended trek that frequently blends and shifts between cacophony and contemplation. You’ll catch the obvious nods to Agalloch’s Pale Folklore with the first barren notes of Exile. Then the song explodes into a clatter of frenetic black metal, as if rushing through a dense, choking tangle of thorns that tear at the skin. Soon after, it emerges into a quiet glade, joined by soaring, tasteful synths and slowing to a more stately pace. By the time warm acoustics and somber clean vocals join in, you should be ready and centered for the long journey ahead.
“A Witness to the Passing of Aeons” balances these moods just as ably, starting off in cramped, whispery gloom before ascending to a more gorgeous and stirring vista. Songwriting is wonderfully fluid and surprising, even crescendoing to a lovely melodic lead in its closing minutes. Unlike other dual-natured bands, Fen doesn’t just limit the rasped vocals to the harsher moments and keep the clean vocals to the more solemn ones - both are interchangeable, with the black vocals adding gravity and danger even as the melodies brighten and blossom.
In many ways, this starts to come off like black metal shoegazer, somewhere between Drudkh and Cocteau Twins. “Colossal Voids,” with its predominant clean vocals and shimmering guitars, makes this comparison even more apparent, as it comes off like countrymates Slowdive. By song’s end, though, the pounding drums and black metal have come crashing back in, and it seems that the song starts to pull itself apart. The clean vocals here start to suffer as well, coming off as tremulous and not confident enough, but that’s really the only spot on the album where this stood out.
The rest of The Malediction Fields offers one excellent track after another, with “The Warren’s” Isis-like opening minutes and the whole of “Lashed by Storm” being two standouts. The closing minutes of “Bereft” are also memorable in that Fen starts flirting with overtly bright, sunny-sounding notes that still fall shy of being ‘happy.’ They’re more hopeful, like shafts of light penetrating to the murk below, and if this sounds like blasphemy to you black metal purists, you might have to get used to it. I’ve been hearing this sort of willingness to push the light-and-shade dynamic more and more these days, showing up in recent efforts from Alcest, Svarti Loghin and Dekadent. Of course, even Burzum had its lovely moments way back when (parts of Tomhet and Dunkelheit), so perhaps this renaissance of lighter melody in black soil is just those seeds taking root.
The Malediction Fields will certainly take a few listens to sink into, but it’s well worth the time. Highly recommended for fans of the above-mentioned bands as well as Wolves in the Throne Room and the new Blut Aus Nord.

The Malediction Fields
Fen
2009, Code666
Black
Pubblicata in data: 29/03/2009

Fen - The Malediction Fields

Jaar van release: 2009
Label: Aural Music

FEN (United Kingdom (Great Britain))
"The Malediction Fields" - CD (2009)
Sello: Aural Music
Género: Atmospheric Black Metal

9.00 / 10

Brilliant - 94%

Written by chrisdoig24k

I have been a fan of Fen for a little while now, listening to Ancient Sorrow religiously. But it always struck me as three very separate songs. When I heard that there would be a full length coming out, I was somewhat nervous. My morning song for months was 'The Gales Scream of Loss', my favourite from the EP. It was a distinct possibility that an album would take an approach more similar to 'Under the Endless Sky', my least favourite. But fortunately, The Malediction Fields sounds more like a mix of the first two tracks – and then some!

One of the high points of Ancient Sorrow was the clean singing. It is much more prominent on The Malediction Fields, which I like very much! However, they don't just sounds like an Agalloch or Ulver (Bergtatt) ripoff. The cleans are very authentic – they certainly do not have the polished evenness that Agalloch uses. Instead, the vocals are less of an instrument, but not near to the other 'lead vocal' extreme. Fen manages to strike a good balance.

But how to describe the music? Fen takes folky atmosphere that closest resembles Ulver's 'Bergtatt', but at the same time, brings something very new to the table. At times furious, at times calm, beautiful, brooding, atmospheric, sometimes even doomy. The Malediction Fields encompasses a wide and tasteful range of emotions.

My personal favourite song would have to be The Warren. It contains a brooding atmospheric buildup that is both tense and enjoyable at the same time, before erupting into some delicious black metal fury. The buildup becomes quite teasing after a few listens, in a way that I have only heard Forest of Shadows do (on Wish).

Individual performances are just fine. The guitars are solid, harsh vocals are tasteful and expressive, clean vocals are far from perfect, but that just adds to the feel. My only real gripe is in the drums. The bass drum is close to inaudible throughout the album, and at times the snare drum is not much better. The performance is perfectly adequate, but the levels are just not quite right.

I am sick to death of hearing black metal cliches such as “freezing winter landscapes” and “goat-crushingly necro”. Very few bands merit the catchphrases that stalk their names. Not even (most of) my very favourites. But Fen is one of the few that I feel deserves this – a gentle snowing evening with a fire creates the same kind of atmosphere for me.

Top Notch - 97% Written by TheTwilightIsMyRobe

When I first heard this band a few months ago, I instantly fell in love. I listened to their EP “Ancient Sorrow” a countless amount of times, and the brilliance of this release came as no surprise to me. As a fan of Agalloch, Ulver, Blut Aus Nord, and other various atmospheric black metal bands, I am a diehard fan of Fen. I highly recommend this band, especially this album to anyone who is a fan of the aforementioned bands.

One of the things I like best about this album is how many different genres are incorporated into the sound and atmosphere of the music. When I listen, I can hear influence from Ulver’s Bergtatt, Agalloch, and I am sometimes even reminded of Alcest. While this album takes a lot of influence from these bands’ styles, they still keep to their very own unique sound. The best way to describe it would be atmospheric black metal with a bit of an earthy folk sound.

As far as instrumentals, and individual talent of the band members, it is all up to par. The guitars are great and are a main component of the atmosphere created by this album. The drums are fabulous, and the vocals are brilliant. Though some think the vocalist is weak, I think he is just performing in an appropriate way to fit the overall scene that this album is trying to purvey. I was quite pleased when I first listened, because I heard more use of clean vocals, which barely showed up on Ancient Sorrow.

Fen is truly a unique band. They do not fall victim to any of the black metal stereotypes that bands like Immortal and Mayhem may have propagated. I cannot stop listening to this album, and I will recommend it and push it to no end. Every black metal fan should have this album.
