Multi instrumentalism

Is any of you guys able to play more than one instrument?

Mr. Swano, how did you get the technique + theory to play almost everything? Taking lessons? Self teaching? Completely by ear? I am curious

I play Drums, Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, sing clean and do growleys.
I don't think it is something anyone decides to do, but does out of necessity rather. I know for me, when I started Shroud Of Bereavement, I just had a bunch of ideas that no one in my past bands would embrace, there fore I just did it all myself.

I started out with drum lessons, and my brother played guitar so I would always sneak in and play his. When I moved out, I had no room for instruments, so I started singing for a band, and they basically made me a better musician on said instruments.

Mmmhhh..I can't agree completely. You know, just think about musicians like Prince or Michael Jackson..

They may be coming from the same place, at least at some point in their life. Unless they wet to music school where they teach several instruments as part of a requirement or something. I don't know enough about those bands mentioned. My point was, I don't think anyone sits there and says, I really want to learn all instruments ya know. It's more like most people dedicate their time to mastering only one thing, where I am ok at all, but not a master of any. For instance, I am no Andy LaRocque on guitar, but I don't suck either, I get by. I also wonder where Dan stands on this subject as well.
Violens, do you play?

i think dan is no virtuoso on any instrument, but has a coherent musical vision about his projects that he manages to execute flawlessly. his skills on the instruments he uses are enough to support that vision. as long as your skills are enough to play the music that's already playing in your mind, you're fine, right?

Yeah, do play drums (taking lessons) and some guitar (not as seriously as drums).

Anyway I understand what you want to say, but I think some people may see the thing from the point of view you think is more improbable. Many skilled musician are persons who passed, you know, like half a day during their childhoods, playing every sort of instrument and studying music..

Agreed, I am trying to teach my daughter as much as possible at a young age, she has a violin, keyboard, Xzylaphone, and we play the guitar with her. he has great rythem for a 2 and 1/2 year old lol. In hope that she gets a better start than I.

I think Antzor said it best for my situation.

when you're recording, your recording tricks and software can also be considered an instrument right?

I can play the beginning of Für Elise on the guitar and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on the Piano. Does that count?
