It depends on you 'r music taste overall. If you love death metal (or other heavy stuff) you should check from Lunar Strain. If you're in more lighter stuff, listen from the end, Soundtrack Of A Playground Fading or Come Clarity. A Sense Of Purpose is considered as worst IF album.

My Opinion:

Real In Flames - The Jester Race/Clayman
Mainstream In Flames - Come Clarity/Sounds of a Playground Fading

But to be honest Jester Race/Whoracle/Colony/Clayman are almost the same level of awesome, I just enjoy Jester Race & Clayman the most.

Come Clarity is a really powerful aggressive album, I wish In Flames had continued this style, A Sense of Purpose sounds so washed up and bland in comparison. Sounds of a Playground Fading has better production, better songs and better guitar solo's + melodies than anything since Clayman IMO.

Whether you like the album or not, Come Clarity is DEFINITELY not ''lighter stuff'', it's one of the most aggressive IF albums overall. ASOP is considered the worst album by you yes, but there is a lot of other people that think that STYE is their worst, or R2R due to the muddy production sound or other reasons.

Personally speaking I still hold Whoracle as my favorite, but I love all of the albums except Lunar Strain, which I find very boring except 1-2 songs.

I said that ASOP is considered worst because majority of those with who I speak find it the worst. CC is lighter because of overall emotion put in it not how much string are dropped. If it is the qualifier then Death is much more lighter then Suicide Silence or other groups like that. But it's only MY opinion, and I respect others (apart from trolling of course).

You'll surely get a wide variety of opinions....depending on whether the person is a fan of "new" in flames or "old" in flames. In my opinion both styles have something to offer. If you're more a fan of traditional melodic death metal, than clayman and before are the albums for you. In my opinion those albums from best to worst would be Clayman/Colony (real close) Whoracle (Black Ash Inheritance), Jester Race (Subterranean), Lunar Strain. If you're more a fan of modern melodic metal and drop the death....check out Reroute and after.....again in my opinion best to worst.....Soundtrack to your escape, reroute to remain, sounds of the playground fading, come clarity, a sense of purpose. Everyone will probably have a different opinion of the albums they think are best....so I'd recommend picking a song or two from those albums....check them out on youtube and seeing which style suits you. In Flames is a very dynamic band...and their sound has drastically changed from 1993 (or so?) - 2012. Good luck

This is a difficult question, because since In Flames changed their style so drastically over the decades, it's almost impossible to compare something like The Jester Race to Reroute to Remain. They're two completely different sounding albums that almost aren't even competing in the same category. This seems to actually be a pretty common thing amongst European and Scandinavian metal bands, generally speaking. Bands like In Flames, The Gathering, Lake of Tears, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, and Fall of the Leafe all drastically changed styles over the years in the pursuit of experimentation, some faring better than others.

In Flames' old style gets nearly completely deconstructed around Soundtrack to Your Escape. Arguably, Clayman was the last committed album in the old In Flames sound; the last one with a prevalence of gothic melodies and folk influences mixed with death metal. Reroute still had some melodies in that vein, but the production was completely different, and by Soundtrack, almost nothing of the old sound remained. So, if I had to pick a favorite of the old style, I would probably say Clayman or Colony, but any album between Jester Race and Clayman defines melodeath. In Flames was pretty much the reigning kings of melodeath for six, seven years, putting out four near-perfect albums in a row.

As for the new sound, which is kind of a weird Swedish metal approximation of hard indie rock with occasional alt-metal, metalcore, and industrial influences, it begins on Come Clarity, which was definitely on the heavier side of this framework, then begins more earnestly on Sense of Purpose. My real complaint with the new sound is that it's all very self-conscious, with repetitive Protooled riffs and not much progressive experimentation. It's all kind of disposable. But there are gems. I like Come Clarity, I dislike Sense of Purpose (which sounds like it was created by a computer program), and I mostly like the new album, even though it kind of feels like The Bjorn and Anders Show Featuring Three Other Guys.

Nothing is truly essential or groundbreaking about their new music, unlike the old sound, which defined a whole genre. They're kind of fucked in a way; they can't go back to the old sound, and their new sound will always be derided as breaking into no new interesting territory. If I had to pick the best of the new era, I'd probably go for Sounds of a Playground Fading, which is probably their most diverse set of songs in years.

I dunno, I guess I'm just getting bored with melodeath influenced music. In that sense, I like hearing songs like "A New Dawn" that add kind of a progressive artsy feel to the formula, what with the atypical structure and violins. I expect this kind of experimentation nowadays. This is why Omnium Gatherum is my favorite of the modern melodeath bands; they take the old melodeath formula and put new interesting twists on it.

Needless to say, everything they did from 1995-2004 is pure gold. But if I really had to choose one, it would be:

Soundtrack To Your Escape

I grew out of being an In Flames fan a long time ago, not long after seeing them live with Slayer in 2006 I guess. But for me, this album is a pure nostalgia injection, like a time machine back to my high school years. Interesting how music can do that!

Soundtrack is when they lost their old sound???? Clayman is still old IF sound???? Yes, there was a drastic change from Clayman to R2R, but does everyone forget there is a huge change from Colony to Clayman? That might even be a bigger one than to R2R. You start with LS, and change slightly all through Colony, and then Clayman hits. Soooo different. I hate these arguments about old and new. Yes, they sound different; very much so to be honest. But it's really with every album, as we all know, so there isn't one year where they completely changed. People just say Clayman was the end of old IF because R2R wasn't too well received; at least not like the albums before. Disclaimer: I came in at 2006, so I wasn't around for the reactions to each album as they came out, but all I see online is that it took people many years to really appreciate R2R, and that doesn't seem to be the case with Clayman.

Jester Race is Classical undoubtedly, but as far as a progressive melodeth sound Clayman was my fav.One of my favorites from that album, square nothing had this explosive surge that just lit me up i dont hear songs like that very often.Though im sure it was obvious the tracks became more or less machined in a way that didnt have the progressive ambiance like the Jester Race or Whoracle.Love them all though.
