Backpacker hip hop is alright, Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Soul Position, (I suppose) k-os, Eyedea And Abilities etc.
I specifically love Atmosphere, probably my favorite rap group in general. However - I do appreciate all other forms of rap, aside from shit like 50 Cent.

he doesn't even know what the fuck he's arguing about. I was talking about old school/underground hip hop vs modern popular garbage (shit that you hear in clubs), I don't mind space rap although I only listen to it on occasion (canibus is my favorite), but to say all of underground hip hop is like that is nonsense.

You'd probably really like Atmosphere's Overcast. Really kind of a more "raw" sound, a more "rap battle atmosphere" compared to the cleaner sounding stuff from God Loves Ugly and onwards.

I really don't understand why modern popular hip hop is still called hip hop, it's nothing more than pop music performed with the very basic elements of hip hop.
to me it's hip pop vs hip hop (underground, old school, space rap, etc...)

Because it is white-boy emo-kid centric, I understand the hate, but when there are people as great as Slug and k-os I can't help but like it

Are these "backpack" rappers white, or just the fans? Not that it really makes any difference.

nice job mentioning some of my favorite rappers there nas, tupac, gangstarr, wu tang etc...
I wasn't talking about space rap. I was talking about shit like blackalicious, jedi mind tricks, kool keith, army of the pharaohs, wu tang clan (though they are very popular), big daddy kane, aceyalone, etc... Underground hip hop is NOT "space" rap, I have no idea who told you this. That's just a small part of the genre.
you sound like one of those morons who thinks all underground metal is satanic bullshit. Get a fucking clue
