Since the other video games thread has fallen by the wayside, someone recommend a good RPG for PS2, preferably with a nice story. Traditional battle and leveling systems are okay, i.e. mash on attack until you win the random encounters.

Edit: D'oh. I'm blind.

Suikoden 3 is really good.

edit-not completely traditional battle and level systems, but close enough.

You're kidding... all those CDs you buy and you can't spare a few hundred for a decent upgrade?

SC2 should be pretty well optimized though... but they can only go so far.

Omitting the last two mentioned... (not that I have anything against them)

Try the Xenosaga series (especially 2 and 3), Disgea series (2), Valkyrie Profile (Norse inspired rpgs ftw), Ys, Shadowhearts (both games)... and I heard the Shin Megami Tensei games are good but haven't got around to.

Those should cover the gameplay... and especially story. If not even 1/3... well, time to stop playing RPGs. :P

I mean look at it. The setting is gay, the characters are fucking retarded, the voice acting absolutely sucks. The story is half decent. The gameplay is okay, nothing exceptional.

I know I can get FF X for $20. The odds of me shelling out $70 for a rare, but legendary game are rare. I'll have to scour the bargain bins. I've seen the first Xenosaga a bunch of times. I passed because I didn't really like Xenogears. I also bought Chrono Cross about a year ago, but it was a real chore to play. I probably only got about 10 hours in.

If you didn't like Xenogears, don't play Xenosaga.

Like I said, Suikoden 3 is a good bet, as well as the newest Suikoden, which I think is number 5.

Dude, good RPG for the PS2 with a good story, if you can find it Digital Devil Saga 1&2, and in a few days you'll be able to get Persona 3 which happens to be part of one of the best gaming series ever Shin Megami Tensei.

Fixed.

Really should get around to re-playing it some day.

Bloodlines is great to, but unfortunately I've never actually finished it as it turns into a massive shit fest towards the end. Particularly if you've chosen to go with a less "fighter-like" character.

And Malkavians > all.

Eh? I don't see how it turned into a shitfest toward the end. Chinatown was pretty lame, yes, but I thoroughly enjoyed most of the main quests toward the end. And Griffith Park was probably one of the scariest/most disturbing moments I've ever experienced in a game.

Overall, I'd say the best chunk of the game took place while in the Downtown area. The museum and Grout's mansion were both really interesting missions, and there's just tons of awesome side quest stuff to do in the city. I loved breaking into people's apartments and uncovering tons of dirt on them.
