Whourkr - For when extreme metal just isn’t noisy enough.

By Russell Garwood

“We’re just two weird musicians suffering from hair loss and trying everything they can to compensate by making extreme music” I Snor (machines and vocals) introduces his band. And compensate they do. Their music provides an unremitting onslaught, a fusion of genres to intrigue and beguile the listener, before pummeling them into submission.

“So Whourkr is a mix of death metal, electronica and breakcore," he continues, "but with a few delicate moments. Our sound is very big, but we dare say, also subtle and full of details. We try to express different values to those commonly found in death metal. So of course there are kilotons of blasts and loads of strange screams, but the main theme is of animals that go insane the way humans can sometimes do - the music describes their schizophrenic behavior.” The subject matter is reflected by an air of schizophrenia in the unremitting music. The ceaseless bombardment of blast beats, tortured screams and distorted guitars is digitally chopped, deformed and filtered into a twisted mass of noise, making the songs veer wildly between ideas.

This never as clear as in the gallic duo’s recently released sophomore album, Concrete. “We really had very precise ideas of what we wanted and never gave up until we got it exactly”, I Snor says of the recording. “So from the moment our brains had created a track to when the final result was mixed and the master was on our loudspeakers, we spent countless hours working on every single damn fucking detail. For example ‘Squirk’ has a part where the double bass drum pedal accelerates proportionally to the tonality of the guitar. It took 3 days and nights of continuous work for the result to be exactly the way we wanted it. All this for 19 seconds, so an average rate of 6.33 seconds of music per night…”

And in case a new album wasn’t enough you’ll also soon be able to get Whourkr lingerie. “No bullshit” the vocalist laughs, “We are working on some underwear in limited amounts, to be sold from our website only. But not just any crap, pure high-class underwear skilfully handcrafted by Mr Johan Deschamps himself! Don’t you think wearing beautiful underwear from a death metal/electronica band is the most delicate and refined thing one can ever do in his life?” As for the future, he continues, “We’re planning to release a vinyl split with Eustachian, and are working on a bonus track for the upcoming re-release of our debut. Otherwise we’re preparing concerts, and of course there’s our underwear project. We’ll be releasing the next album around 2090 and it will most probably be relaxing salsa and noise-tango for old people.” In the meantime you can purchase Concrete from the band while they cement a label release. If you’re looking to be aurally violated in the most brutal fashion, it doesn’t get much better.

Concrete is set to be released this October in the US/Canada through Crucial Blast Records. Trendkill Recordings are to release in Europe. The band will be touring in support.

Yeah agreed, these guys are awesome, very refreshing and unique. I've been listening to Mulk too, similar death/electronic mix but less weird and more brutal.

Yes agree, these guys are fantastic, very unique and refreshing. I listened too much like Mulk's death / mix of electronics, but less weird and more brutal. Cartier Jewelry Chanel Tote Bags
