You say you don't like Progressive rock but what do you think Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and Alexander the Great is? Its total Prog.
I beg to differ!! Why else would you be so insistant!! I couldn't find a studio version - you get me one and I will listen again but I really doubt that I will change my mind because I don't like prog!

I would say that Brighter Than A Thousand Suns is Maiden's prog song and I don't like that one much either.

I just wanted to show you an example of progressive rock that sounds similar to Maiden to me. You don't have to like it, but I did expect you to have some appreciation since you are such a music fan.

Yes and Maiden are really similar. I know both bands really really well! Maiden is like if Yes was Metal. That's it! If you were with me here I can sit you down and play you a bunch of stuff and you'd get it. What you heard was a crazy intro to a long song. That 5 minute bit does not sound like Maiden. Yes has like 18 albums. Its hard to just listen to 5 minutes of one song and say you hate it.

If you still want to check some out, try this video. Watch both parts though. Don't just watch one minute. Here is part 1

I watched both parts and no, I still don't get it!! I'll not say what I thought of the song so let's just leave it at "it's not my thing" ok.

Yeah this thread would have been better if we just kept to the topic.

But do you see how I see Maiden as a Metal prog band kind of? That was really the point I think I was trying to make. I think. Shit, I don't know what the hell I'm talkign about!

UP THE IRONS!

No I don't! On Brighter Than A Thousand Suns, yes I can see that. Otherwise no I can't! Plus I know someone who likes Yes but doesn't like Maiden so I guess you can't win 'em all!!

Gotta love the sound of that Rickenbacker in that Yes video! If I were a bassist I would DEFINITELY play a Rick!

I really like Yes and listened to them a lot when I started playing drums. The bass is just amazing. Alan White is awesome!

You're actually a fantastic drummer too. Very solid!

Do you like Bill Bruford too? He's great in Crimson.

A lot of people here think I'm nuts when I say there is a lot of crossover between Maiden and Yes. I definitely see it.

Chris works hard for his sound just like Entwistle did....
Quote:
Squire obtained his distinctive tone at the time by rewiring his RM1999 into stereo and sending the bass and treble pickups each into a separate amplifier. This technique is known as "bi-amping". By splitting the signal from his bass into dual high and low frequency outputs and then sending the low frequency output to a conventional bass amplifier and the high-frequency output to a separate lead guitar amplifier, Squire produced a tonal 'sandwich' that added a growling, overdriven edge to the sound while retaining the Rickenbacker's powerful bass response. This gave his bass sound bright, growling higher frequencies and clean, solid bass frequencies. This technique allowed Squire to utilise harmonic distortion on his bass while avoiding the flat, fuzzy sound, loss of power and poor bass response that typically occurs when bass guitars are overdriven through an amplifier or put through a fuzz box. He also uses fresh strings for every show.
Lemmy does something similar cranking the shit out of a guitar amp along with a bass amp.

Chris Squire has a great sound and in all fairness the Rick is perhaps the coolest looking bass. Buuuuuuuuutttttt ergonomicaly it is a very different beast. The neck profile is quite odd. Where most basses have a ( feel to them the Rick is like { minus the point.

Oddly enough I think they look great and Chris, Geddy, and Lemmy all sound great but ergonomically I cannot play one at all. Nothing fits me.

Jim
