A Metal History lesson
Hey Guys -
Over the last few weeks I have discovered a few bands that I have totally forgotten about and no further listen, I have realised what a huge impact they have had on the metal scene and the recent Euro power metal explosion. If you haven't heard these bands I highly reccomend getting a hold of these releases.... Vicious Rumours - Welcome to the ball. US Power thrash with a Halford/Dio (Style) vocalist, awesome shredding and great production for it's time. Racer X - Street lethal - PAUL GILBERT!... when he had shit to prove, shred for days, awesome drumming from Scott travis and the awesome and totally underrated Vocals from Jeff Martin. Great songs too These are only two but I am sure there is more from the late 80's that were eaten up by grunge... Damn you Cobain! Stu

Try Celtic Frost.
Anyone remember Celtic Frost? A premire metal band from the 80's that completely disappeared, right around the time grunge came into fashion, oddly enough. Anyone know where I's can score the better Celtic Frost albums and more importantly, anyone know the names of the better Celtic Frost albums. For the life of I, I's can find any anywhere I's look and, for some reason, it's really shitting I off. Oh, well. Any help? Peace The Pimp NeonBlack

I's always forget to check JB. Maybe that's because I's hates it so much. Oh, well. Anything to get a good Celtic Frost album (within reason that is).

Celtic Frost went to the wall when they went from being a black/thrash/death band to a hair band. "Cold Lake"? What were they thinking?

Vicious Rumours played Wacken last year and although I didn't watch them, I've scored some of their live footage. Definitely a band I want to check out more. and the guitarist made this awesome guitar for Wacken this year www.geocities.com/avantasiavixen/woa2003.html I wanted it! ![]() Technical Difficulties by Racer X is definitely a favourite of mine, but I have to admit, I haven't heard all of their albums. Funny thing about Celtic Frost, after hearing SO much about them and their cult status, I borrowed a couple of albums and they did nothing for me...although I'd be interested in reading Morbid Tales (?). it might open up my mind to their music as Nobody Gets Out of Here Alive did for me with The Doors.

Ahhhh sooo much great stuff in the late '80s and early '90s that came out and the bands got nowhere because they were rolled under the wheels of grunge unfortunately.
Damn you Cobain indeed ![]() Here are some old bands I will recommend that had a killer sound and I think stood out and should have been bigger: Spread Eagle, EZO, Treat, Saints & Sinners, Keel, Firehouse, Rhett Forrester, Lee Aaron, Slave Raider, Roxx Gang, TNT. All these bands rock as long as you don't have anything against hair metal or melodic hard rock stuff. They all either have great chops (esp. TNT, Firehouse and Saints & Sinners), or a killer attitude and ultra-high energy, heavy sound, or awesome awesome songwriting that's REALLY catchy!

Stuff like that was what made it possible for the market to come under the influence of grunge, becuase they need something harsh, hard and aggressive that also had commerical appear. Hence grunge filling the void for a time. But look on the bright side with grunge. Whilst that stuff (some good, some bad -all depending on taste and preference) filled the void in places like North America and Australia, it also allowed under ground metal in Europe to spread, eventually giving us bands such as Emperor, Dark Throne, In Flames, Dimmu Borga, Bathor, etc. So, therefore grunge can't be viewed as have an entirely negative effect on metal. And how many of you young metalheads turned to metal either because of an interest in early grunge or a total hatred for it? Just think 'bout it. Peace The Pimp NeonBlack

Who is this Bathor??? of wich you speak I think grunge did'nt take over from metal I think it filled a void when no new bands came around and bands like Darkthrone, Bathory, Deicide and cannibal corpse were to uncommercial to push into the market That bands like Motley crue and G'n'R's had fostered

And yes, Poodle, that was what I's was saying. That during the Reign Of Grunge, Underground European metal was once again given a chance to expand and experiment without the taint of soft commerical metal that was coming out of the Old Country at the time (like Scorpians and so forth). So face it, without grunge and ultra-wimpy Cock Rock, we may not have had the same brutallity in metal that we have today. Same argument can be made of Nu-metal and the ammount of metalheads came to the TRUE metal because of their initial exposure to Nu-metal and their lusting for some better and more original.

Personally I'd prefer metal without the brutality and with more melody, flash, excitement and rock & roll but that's just me.
And grunge had no effect on my getting into metal. I just kinda ignored the whole thing. And the thing that pisses me off about what grunge did is that it made hard rock and metal look like a joke to most people. Most people I know who aren't into metal think anything with a big chorus, guitar solos, high pitched vocals, and fun attitude is "cheesy" whether it be hair metal, heavy metal, power metal, etc. If it isn't all monotone, underproduced, shit, boring and depressing then it must be cheesy. You can thank grunge for that. I don't think it had any positive effect at all. I think nearly EVERY metal band outside of the European scene was negatively affected ar least in some small way by grunge happening.

Ahh, the Eighties
Such fond memories of a simnpler time, just been dragging out the ol' LP's and cassettes for a look-see.
Bonfire Tesla Dio Michael Schenker Lita Ford! White Lion Whitesnake WASP!!!! Cinderella Queensryche Aussie boys Heaven (where IS Bradford Kelly these days) Hericane Alice Danger Danger (Andy Timmons one helluva player) *this is probably getting ugly, maybe I should stop here* (I will go on at a later date if requested to do so, be it at the peril of my self-perceived cred. However, this will require me opening iup the "cupboard of eighties" and fishing past my badged-up denim jackets and great coats to the pile of "classics" buried next to my snake skin boots with the chains on) As for the Warrants and Poisons of the era. Why we are all probably being more honest than we would be about this topic elsewhere, there were some pretty swell licks than came from those cats, I'll give them that. It was real hard to define metal back then too. Anyone old enough remember when Allanah Myles was being touted as heavy metal on some compliations!! Rememeber the acts that were landing on the Masters Of Metal compilations, bands like Choirboys and Loverboy. Shit Stu, I wish you hadn't started this thread man ![]() |

Aint exactly groovy to dig 80's down here
Stu, mate, living down here one tends to supress ones urge to shoot the shit re: the Eighties. Not enough of us around here to remenisce on the ol' days as there seems to be up your way.
I'm gonna have to get me a decent cassette/turntable combo if I keep thikin' oof all these old gems out. First thing I'd do is drag out the whole Twisted Sister catalogue on cassette BTW, anyone here been following Sevendust since Jay Jay took them under his wing a few years back?So a few more that are springing to mind include: *Fastway (was that "Trick or Treat" the movie that the soundtrack was for? And was it Eddie "'Fast Fingers" Clarke on the geetar?) *Overkill *Killer Dwarfs *RATT (R.I.P. Robbin Crosby) *Kix *Europe *Night Ranger *Kings Of The Sun (go Aussie) *Venom *King Diamond *XYZ (gotta soft spot for that "After The Rain" ballad, may as well say it now I'm being open an' all) *Bullet Boys *Uriah Heep *Metal Church *Dangerous Toys *Faster Pussycat (again, a soft spot here for the o' harmonica toon "House of Pain") *Loudness *D.A.D. *Leatherwolf *Bengal Tigers *Saraya God, where is this shit coming from! Wow, I'm spent, tata for now. |

Awesome list! KILLER DWARFS! BULLETBOYS! KING DIAMOND! FASTWAY! LOUDNESS!
![]() I had Kings Of The Sun's debut but I didn't like it. Candy Harlots kicked their ass!! Five Wicked Ways is much better than Kings Of The Sun's debut I think... but the Candy Harlots demo "The Tease Tapes" is even better. Roxus were EASILY the best of the Aussie bands though!!! BOOOOODY HEAAAAT! I WANNA HAVE YOU RIGHT NEXT TO MEEEE.. I WANNA FEEL IT LIKE IT USED TO BEEEEEEEE...
