I got bored this evening and went for a 2 hour walk. These were the result of my walk. I think I need a stronger torch.

Cheers Mick. I'm hoping to get out and do more when I get my new tripod next week. Fun times ahead.
I took these last night at the Espy for Elm Street's final gig in Australia (for now). They're heading to Europe to live and tour. I wish them the best of luck. They're seriously an amazing band. Check them out if you haven't already. http://www.metalelmstreet.com/ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Some shots of HMAS Vendetta and Citrus Jam performing at the Evelyn Hotel on Anzac Day in Melbourne.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The venue had some decent lighting to work with, along with a lighting guy who knew what he was doing.

You would need to invest in a flagship compact camera like the Fujifilm X10, Olympus XZ-1 or the new Canon PowerShot G1X. Most of these cameras start at around $800. However, If you are willing to spend that much, you may as well invest in a entry level or mid-range DSLR like the Canon 60D or the Nikon D7000. Its a more worthwhile investment as you can upgrade as you go, as oppose too buying a compact camera and being stuck with it. You can buy interchangeable lenses for most flagship compact cameras, but they don't offer the same versatility and sharpness as a DSLR lens and body. Check these videos out of both Entry-Mid level DSLRs and Compact Cameras. Entry-Mid Range DSLR Cameras: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...7&feature=plcp Compact Cameras: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list...9&feature=plcp Remember. It all comes down to personal choice. Go to both independent and mainstream dealers and try before you buy. Don't let them pressure you into one brand over another, as most of the staff at those places have a prefixed love affair with either Canon or Nikon.

Tim, do you have any preferences to shotgun mics?
I'm looking into buying one for my Canon 7D for live music and interview recordings. I've been looking at this one. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...a_Mounted.html

Yeah, the Rode is a cheaper one but you can get some really good results out of it. I'd recommend a separate recorder, though, like a Zoom H4N. The 7D can accommodate the Rode fine but you still have no control over levels (so loud gigs will still freak it out, and you can't tell if you're hearing the interviews OK) and no way to listen in to what the camera is hearing.
I have a cheaper mic and recorder that we use whenever we need field audio and it's worked great so far. The Rode is superior to what I have, though, so I'd recommend that (we were on a tight budget when we bought our gear). But yes, you'll get superior sound even just with the 7D and the Rode, but I do recommend a separate external recorder and headphones and then sync up the quality audio from the recorder to the vision later in your video editor and mute the 7D audio, using only the external recorder audio. |

Nice photo, Mick.

I'll look into some decent sound recorders. I'm willing to spend around $300 - $400 on a setup. It won't get me much, but it will be enough for starters.

Thanks for the reply, Anwar. I'm not sure how much I'm willing to spend...perhaps $500 if I get a decent tax return. I'd rather get a DSLR, but then I do want a compact first, because there are lots of situations where a DSLR is too bulky and a compact would be fit for purpose. I'll check out those cameras you mentioned. Where do you tend to buy your camera stuff?

I was using a compact camera for about 2 years before I decided to go for an entry level DSLR. You can notice the difference stright away when using a DSLR over a compact camera. $500 will probably get you Fujifilm FinePix X10 or an Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS. Check out CNET. They have a database which sorts out cameras depending on price. I've set it from $0 - $500. These prices may differ to instore, but not by that much. http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-came.../#maxPrice=500 I usually go to Micheal's Cameras, Ted's Cameras or an independent retailer called Peninsula Camera Centre down my way. Don't go to JB Hifi. They still have overpriced tags on most of their stock and they only stock mainstream brands. If you want sound advice and a chance to try out the cameras. Head on over to Micheal's in the Melbourne CBD.
