I had a 1080i TV that was 32" then I got a 40" that is 1080p and the difference is huge. When I watch HD TV and it is a 1080i signal there is difference between that and a Blu Ray. If you just want it for this generation of gaming consoles and possibly Foxtel HD you would only need 1080i if you arn't picky.

Also how far away will you be sitting from the TV, because if you are too close getting a bigger one will not be a good idea as it will blur.

The thing I did was go to JB HI FI and look at all the TVs and see what I liked best. By comparison I preferred Sonys picture over Samsung as they were too black. They say black is the hardest to make on a LCD but just because you can do it don't mean you should over use it and I personally think Samsung have. I have read good things about Toshiba as well.

Owned many different TVs over the years. Sony's have been good, wasn't happy at all with the LG I had.

Currently have a 46" LCD Samsung. While I had major issues with Samsung as a company (getting screwed over with regards to the 'free' TV deal), the TV itself is great.

Suffers a bit from dodgy HDMI inputs, and interference, but I think that's more due to the amount of cabling we have in the loungeroom - amplifier, dvd player, PS3, 360, Wii, etc etc.

Do the Full HD Samsungs have game mode? That feature was pretty cool in the 32" I played.

I should have actually pointed that out, that 1080i and 1080p have major differences when watching Blu-Ray movies, yet since Mitch is only using it for gaming and watching the odd TV show, he'll probably only need 1080i since he isn't that picky on the sharpness of the image.

Sony's have amazing clarity and sharpness, but Samsung are still a decent brand and produce amazing picture on their TVs.

I am interested to know why it doesn't make a difference in gaming though, personally I noticed it? But that cold be my mind trying to tell me there is a change as an excuse for getting an expensive TV.

And yeah Samsung is a great TV and are much cheaper than most brands especially Sony. So Mitch will definantly not be going the wrong way if he goes with a Smasung thats for sure. I just had the extra cash to get a Sony as I liked the picture better.

Personally I think gettng 1080p would be the right way to go about it, to future proof the TV.

It's taking so much fucking willpower not to go out and buy an Xbox360 Elite with my taxback.

Just a heads up for those of you that like to snap up a bargain and/or save a few $$$$.

Harvey Norman apparently are currently selling the Simpsons game and Burnout Paradise for the PS3 for $20.

Apparently they are not (YET ) on JB Hifis' "exclusions list", so people have been able to utilise JB's "trade 2 PS3 games and get [insert game here] free" to in effect get Race Driver Grid and Metal Gear Solid 4 for $40 each.

EDIT: And take this with a large pinch of salt, but there is a rumoured setlist for "Guitar Hero World Tour" on the Gamefaqs' forum here:

I definitely won't be watching blue-ray movies on it. Yeah, it's pretty much for gaming, and the occasional DVD.

I'm sure there is a decent difference between 720p and the 1080's, but because I only have a fairly small budget, I'd prefer to spend the money on getting one few inches bigger, rather that one which is just slightly sharper on certain things.

I had quick look at JB on the way home and yeah the Samsungs were the ones that stood out to me. Didn't have a good look though because I was in a hurry to catch the bus. Will go back and have another look in the next week or so.

ooooo, interesting list. The first 8 or 9 tiers aren't that great, but those later tours are fucking great. I hope that list is mostly right.
