LT, I noticed today that my work is having a function at this place. I think you'd feel right at home:

Hey what proportion of musicians do you think can actually read sheet music? Devin Townsend can't (unless he's taught himself in recent years), and I'd assume there'd be lots of others like him.

I'm absolutely fucking dreadful at it and I don't believe any of the other past or present LORD or Dungeon members could, or at least well. My theory knowledge is really good but actual sight-reading is particularly shit.

I could never site read.... but I could "figure it out" given some time. The funny thing was at school, there was a kid in my class who also played piano and was BRILLIANT at site-reading... however take the music away and he wouldn't be able to play from memory at all

Not everyone, but quite a few people I have known who are great sight readers are not so good at putting feeling into their playing. Almost like they have learned the science but not the art, but probably a simple result of not having played a particular piece often enough for their individual style to be impressed upon it. I'm thinking more piano here than guitar.

For the regular player, sight reading should only be an aid to learning to play a piece, otherwise it's for those that have to keep to strict timing such as in orchestras or for those who have to play a piece on the spot as with session muso's.

I can sight read single notes on the script quite well though when it comes to chords - forget about it.

I could when i played piano. Was playing classical in primary school. Can't do it for the life of me now. Can't even begin to learn it with guitar. I think sheet music is much easier to correlate to piano. Start at middle C, go up or down....

I think a well-rounded musician should be able to at least slowly/stumblingly half-sight read a simple melody (something like what I think most of you guys above are describing). Its a useful skill that you should have learnt at some point but it shouldn't matter if you're rusty as hell, as long as you can still use the skill to some degre. Beyond that it's like Stephen said, orchestra players and session musos.

I think its a slightly worrying sign if a muso can't read it at all, and I'd be ing a bit if someone auditioned for my (hypothetical) band and couldn't sight-read Happy Birthday at all, but I wouldn't begrudge someone like Devin who is hella talented, its a moot point in that circumstance.

I think most musos have some degree of proficiency with it.

I've seen videos of Kevin Talley site-reading while drumming for Black Dahlia Murder (he had to learn a set in 24 hours). That shit is crazy!

That's paraphrased from the interview he did with Rolling Stone a few weeks back. As much as I'm forever grateful for Geoff for being probably THE biggest influence in my vocal career, and as cool as he was to meet, his interview was pretty full of holes if you're a pretty big fan and know the history properly.

I also recall reading about their cabaret show a while back.

There seems to be a lot of negative bickering between punters and bands at the moment about the recent troubles 4ARM got into with Nemesis Records over their now canceled American tour.

Edit: It reminds me of that debacle L.A. Guns went through over here a couple of years back.

Does anyone call them 4SKIN when slagging them off?

The situation is rather odd. Conflicting stories abound!

There was a popular punk band around in the 80's named 'the 4 Skins'. There were four skin-heads in the band of course.

Everyone claims to throw their arms in the air when they hear stories of bands having to pay to play. We spent in excess of $20,000 to come to the US for a run of shows where we never received what we were told we were going to receive. This is the bigger picture, not what venues we were told to play in. We are sorry to our US fans and promise we will be back.
Well, now they know why everyone throws their arms in the air over bands paying to play. They found out the hard way.

That venue looks killer.
