yeah thanks for the advice guys!

i ended up ordering one from IBM direct today...their customer service is absolute SHIT.
i couldnt buy that particular item from the web, so my other option was to email it. easy enough.
however the girl said that i get NO confirmation of my order whatsoever - it just turns up if it went through ok. also up to 10 working days. WOW QUICK. and it cost me 80-ish for the keyboard, plus 15 for shipping. FUCK.

I have a question about external hard drives.

I want to buy a 500GB or 750GB external hard drive to send to a friend in the USA, so I'm told it's best if the drive has an internal voltage switch.

Are these common?

You need to make sure that it (by whatever means) can operate on 110v (US) or 220v (Australia). Often it will be written on the power pack that powers the HDD. Also, you might need an adaptor for the US style plug. The Buffalo I have here in the office does it automatically- no need for a physical switch between 110 and 240v. If you see a brand you like, look up the specs on the manufacturers site on the web.

Why not purchase the HDD from a US based site, and put in your friends address?

Because I assume that he will want to use it back here. And rather than having to buy an expensive converter just have so that it can switch.

Yep - going to be sending it to a friend in the USA who's going to load it up and send it back to me.

Sounds like it's doable - thanks all

^^ You could always get a 2.5" external HDD caddy that takes its power from the USB socket.
