Hmmm... that makes me think, I've never seen anyone bother to overclock a mac either. Probably due to the very "closed" nature of it's hardware/software

What exactly where you planning on using the 8-core (I'm assuming a Mac Pro) machine for? I did some calculations before, you could build 4 quad-core machines, each running 8gb of ram for the same price, if not cheaper!

It is mainly for Orchestration with samples. I know I can get a PC heaps cheaper for the same specs, but I don't want to go back to them.

I am going to go get the iMac now, its a 24" with 3.06 GHz dual core, 4gb ram, 500 gb HD and the Geforce card with 512 MB (which I don't really need) It is $3065, which is expensive for those specs but much cheaper than the Mac Pro, I will save up for that later.

Was just asking about the difference in the Quad cores becuase I could get a MAc Pro standard with no screen for $3600, and then build it up over time, but it doesn't seem worth it.

Yeppers- buy the best machine you can afford but back from the bleeding edge so you're not paying a useless premium for the latest hardware. Generally, don't bother to upgrade bits'n' pieces unless they break- you're better off saving those dollars for the next machine. Overclocking is fun, but I think that in general unless you already have the gear for advanced cooling you don't want to push the machine much- and the gear for cooling can cost as much as the more expensive (PC) model anyway (though not 2 grand I'm sure!!)

I personally wouldn't bother overclocking a mac. The closed nature has nothing to do with it, and that's an old school fact that went away with the dodo many years ago. Mac's have had generic hardware in them for the last 15 years, from HDD's, RAM, Optical drives. The only real issues were motherboards and CPU's because Foxconn wouldn't exactly sell you an Apple motherboard and Motorola wouldn't make their CPU's available off the shelf for consumers. But that didn't stop the overclocking community. Mac's have been overclocked for a while.

Will you notice the difference with 400MHz faster CPU? Probably not. You'll encode a DVD about 1 minute faster. Save the $2K on something else. More RAM maybe. Or for another computer when this one needs upgrading.

The iMac is a very capable machine anyway. I do a lot of intense work on my machines. I have 9 Desktops at home, 2 servers and 4 laptops. My 17" MackBook Pro has replaced four desktop machines, and it's a 2.33GHz Dual Core. Everything the 4 desktops did is now in a Virtual machine on the MBP. Where did the 4 desktops go that got replaced? Donated to charity.

The iMac form factor is very sexy too.

That is a serious piece of spyware. Try spybot search and destroy (free) which should identify what it is but may not remove it. Then search the net for solutions to that particular brand of spyware. You could also try combofix because you've just rebuilt the system so it don't matter much if you have to reinstall again.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html <-- yep, get this.

That virus alert is actually the virus itself, believe it or not. It's tricking you into buying the "full version of the product" that the virus alert is supposedly from.

I'd also junk Norton and get a real virus scanner like AVG, Avast or one of the other ones you can find on the web. Norton is USELESS and a complete system resource hog.

I run AVG and Spybot SD, but neither would remove a nasty little porn link, that attached itself to my system last week. Kept telling me to dl anti-spyware from a link, obviously, I didn't use it.
It wouldn't let me delete it, saying it was being used by other running programs. Ended up having to search for every little file it had attached itself to, and deleting them manually. Nasty little fucker.

My possibly dumbarse question is: I have criminally slow dial-down, (live in a rural area can't do much about it) I am using IE, sometimes it freezes, FF isn't much better, what is Google Chrome like? And would it run with dial-up? Would it be better than the others, or should I wait until it has been around awhile?
Thanks.

Nah, it'd not gonna do much better for your connection speed at all. If your computer is a little slow then it'll likely help because it uses less resources than the other browsers but it won't help your dialup speed (or give the illusion of helping it) very much at all.

Having said that, Chrome is pretty damn good so it's worth giving it a go - you may prefer it and your system just might prefer to run that as compared to the other browsers.

My pc runs well enough, its a dual core with 1gb ram, not brilliant, but does the job.
I might have to give it a go, anything is worth a try.
Might have to go to a friends to dl it though!!!

Thanks for that.

So you wouldn't have the experience of tabs? They are heaven. Well you would, but with Dialup it would be pointless.
