Oh but it did, it certainly did. But it leaves me wondering, if it had fallen from space, surely someone would have noticed a streak in the sky. Maybe it lived in the ocean all that time and was just coming up for a splishy splash like a dolphin? I dunno. But at any rate, if it were it's full size when it fell/splashed, someone would have had to have noticed. Maybe it was only an egg when it fell into the water? But then where would have it's parasites have come from? UGH.

The theory for the ending that I've seen the most is:

At the credits ending of Cloverfield, *spoilers* the audio from the video cam says, "Help us!".
But when played backwards, it says, "It's still alive!" This happens after the end credits
of Cloverfield. Assuming the speaker was Rob, he suggests Cloverfield (the monster)
is still alive. This also suggests a sequel for Cloverfield 2! *Spoilers*

The Japanese oil company TAGRUATO drops a satellite (Chimpanz III) into the ocean as part
of viral marketing (shown at the end of the movie when Rob and Beth were on the ferris wheel).
TAGRUATO works with SLUSHO (a slush company), as the main ingredient for SLUSHO is found
at the satellite dropzone (deep ocean). While searching for satellite and ingredients, they
woke Cloverfield (the monster).

People who were at the party in the beginning of the movie, were seen wearing SLUSHO shirts.
Rob apparently was going to be the Vice President of TAGRUATO in Japan.

The main ingredient of Slusho apparently turns a tiny fish into a HUGE whale, which explains
the size of Cloverfield. *Update* The main ingredient is a deep sea nectar.

For animals/fishes/insects to survive in the deepest ocean (very high boiling temperature),
they naturally have very high heat resistance. This explains how Cloverfield is able to
withstand numerous bombs and attacks from the army.

Cloverfield refers to the field formerly known as Central Park. Clovers are
usually prone to grow at places after bombing. Thus the term "Clover" and "field" referring to park.

Where did it's parasites come from then? Were they tiny sea insects that also grew from the "deep sea nectar"?

Well, whatever fell into the ocean, it can be seen in this video. First are the stills from second 39 and 40. That's where to watch.

See, I saw that but from what I saw in the online version is looks like the wake of a ship moving from left to right. I need a higher res version.

It seems it's probably what woke up the beastie. I was reading that JJ Abrams says the monster was asleep under the water for thousands of years before that, so maybe it splashed down and hit him on the head. Also I read he claims the monster is just a little baby monster who's grumpy for being woken up and NEXT TIME IT'LL BE THE MOMMA.

edit: or maybe what splashed was the little buggies and they started chewing on him and woke him up.

Well, hopefully when momma wakes up, the movie will be written about momma and not just diverting momma to a subplot like form like they did with this monster.

I didn't follow all the online marketing whatnots before the movie, but I don't like how much neato stuff there was out there in background that was left out entirely, like the slusho drink being made from nectar farmed from the bottom of the ocean, or etc. Hopefully it's something like Slurm from Futurama and the goo actually comes from the sleeping monster's butt.

I'd drink that!

Yar, I hate it when everyone wants all the answers spoonfed to them. Using your brain every once in a while is not going to fucking kill you.

I think the best part of the movie is that the camera was operated by a man named Hud.

For those not in the know, Head-Up Display is a term for First Person Games where all the player information is displayed. Really made me laugh.

I was just reading this: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=41100 interview with the director, and thought this was interesting

"CS: Any possibilities for a "Cloverfield" sequel?

Reeves: This was so fun 'cause we'd never done anything like it, and I think we'd want to find a similar challenge, to find a way to have its roots in this but be fresh and new, otherwise you're just repeating yourself. There's a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that's been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy's briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another. That idea sort of tickled me. We'll have to see if anyone would want a sequel. If the movie does well and we find a compelling reason to do so then it would be fun to do a sequel. "

It's an interesting concept which I hadn't thought of. Although the more they do this the more room there is for error in the sense of having to make sure any scenes that line up between the two sync in both, but then again they skipped a lot of time here and there so they could easily just make up whatever and not have to worry about it for the most part, but I bet it'll get crazily analyzed by movie geeks if they go that route!

And it seems so far the movie has down well enough to warrant backing more films, since it seems it made a record $46 million over the weekend , and it's budget was about half that.

I'd much rather see a continuation than a rehash from a different perspective though.

Aye, although I can't help thinking about how vastly worse Blair Witch 2 was than the original....

Nope. It's quite possible to make a good AVP movie. Predator was an excellent film and the sequel was quite terrible, but the Predator legacy/canon is easily available for development in other direction.

Alien is almost perfect, and Cameron's sequel was different but similarly brilliant. Arguably, Alien 3 has depths that take some time to fully explore.

The idea that a good AVP movie would be impossible to make is pretty far off the mark. You're conflating why they've made the two thus far ($!) with the making of any more. Just because these two have been scripted and directed by morons, fanboys and (quite probably) the illiterate doesn't mean the idea that a good AVP movie could be made is impossible.

Actually, AvP is very easily done. there are soooo many AvP books out there with strong characters and a good plot it would seem like a no brainer.
But, Hollywood is doing what they do with many sequels, churn out something ASAP, get some no name directors ( or at least lower shelf ones ), bring as many people in that first weekend as they can. Once word of mouth spreads the movie will quickly die but by that time they made enough ( hopefully ) to cover their cost.
Blah, don't even want to talk about it anymore.

Have to disagree again. AvP was terrible in all its forms, including the comics. I just don't see any way to make that combo work.

Yeah, but Aliens VS Predators.

It's the idea, not necessarily any of the products that could be awesome.

Man, I was so hoping Danny Glover would pop up at some point during the new AVP to injure all the other humans, leaving them as prey to play with, saying some cool one-liners then taking off to the choppa. But apparently he's not even doing another Lethal Weapon; seemingly he really is too old for that shit.

So should I see Cloverfield?

Nope.

It was awful. That people get dragged into the absolutely nothingness is a tragedy.

On another note, I saw Charlie Wilson's War last night and it was pretty good.

i suggest seeing cloverfield drunk, it will numb you to the effects of the camera.

on a side note, i thought it was fucking great. made to be as realistic as possible and ended great, even though they give away the ending in the TRAILERS.

I actually went to see it a second time, and managed to see the much-rumored thing that falls into the water at the end. Good times.

I saw Cloverfield tonight and thought it was good. The shaky camera was annoying, but I think it worked very well. If they had a normal camera covering everything, it would have seemed too much like every other monster/disaster movie. Had I gone in expecting normal camera use, I would have been upset. But since everything in the trailers was camcorder-style, I didn't expect anything different.
