The Snow Patrol. On a metal site. Hmmmm, don’t stop reading quite yet, because whether or not you like the band is fairly irrelevant, as this is singer Gary Lightbody’s mix CD. Hence it has none of his own music on it! The lengthy track-list is as follows:

I’m not ashamed to say with that many acts, spread over two discs, I don’t know the majority of the artists, and I’m assuming most readers on this webzine will be in a similar position. So let’s ignore the names for a minute. What we have here is an eclectic, laid back mix; some tracks are soft-house/electronica, while others range through rock moments and more organic sounds, to pure indie. As such, this mix has obviously been carefully constructed, with each track chosen for a reason. Standouts include the relaxed, unforgettable “Everything Is Alright” by
Four-Tet, and
Deerhoof’s eccentric, ever changing “Milking”. With such a variety of tunes, skilful mixing is a necessity, and sometimes Lightbody succeeds. Yet, unsurprisingly, some of the transitions on the mix are less than perfect. The resulting disjointed feel gives character, however, and suits the chosen music well, for the most part.
Through the course of
The Trip there is a progression, from more upbeat tunes to a late-night, headphones and lights-out feel by the end. Hence this release is a very good introduction to all the featured artists, as well as standing as a successful mix album in its own right, and comes highly recommended. A lovingly constructed, well-crafted mix.
