Crimson Ghosts – Leaving The Tomb

Crimson Ghosts – Leaving The Tomb
Fiend Force Records/Cargo Records – 9th May 2005
By Russell Garwood

Leaving The Tomb is the debut album from German horror-punks The Crimson Ghosts. With the band’s starting point playing Misfits covers this should come as no surprise. The music here is heavy punk, high tempo with relatively heavy distortion on the guitars. These still hold much melody and tend to rely on simplistic chord work. The vocals are a gruff half-shout, half-sing, an effevtive front to the music. The bass and drums are as simple as the rest of the instruments. The production is clean and balanced, and horror movie samples are a nice addition.

Hence there are no surprises here at all, Leaving The Tomb does – to steal a phrase - exactly what it says on the tin. If you’re a fan of the style, this is a must, and it proves great as a novelty and change from the norm. That said, the rough-and-ready approach may dissuade fans of more complex music, and Crimson Ghosts are an acquired taste. Entertaining stuff.

6.5/10

What the hell? I'm listening to them right now, and they're the last people i'd expect to see on here.

Would you be Russel Stein?
