Most will disagree with me, but I feel they were indeed metal (and a whole lot more, obviously). To my ears, their debut is still heavier than most death metal (many will laugh as this assertion).

For their era, sure. Just like Deep Purple.

For my money, they're metal. Like WDIV (is your name taken from Channel 4 in Detroit?) said, for their era they were clearly metal. Are they as heavy as Metallica, Pantera or most modern metal bands? No.

I feel Purple more metal than LZ. But it's all a matter of time and evaluation.

I don't think they were metal. Still, I think they were influential to metal. Neither AC/DC nor Boston were ever metal, but also had big influences in metal music as did Kiss. I think the hard rock bands are cousins of metal and both have influenced each other greatly.

The 2-greatest bands, Van Halen & Led Zep are similar... they are/were the best hardrock bands of thier time and did have minimal metal tones and riffs in thier music. In the end, they are hardrock-not metal.

Metal at the time, now considered Rock. At least imo. Some would disagree. But still they were very influential to metal.

Are you kidding me? I told you how similar. They are cosidered two of the best hardrock bands of alltime, thats a fact! They also have two of the best hardrock songwriters/guitarists, singers/frontmen ...are you going to argue that? They are rock n roll bands with metal influences and tones at times!
