Worst Opeth Song Moment

Ok, so we've been through what our favourite parts are... but what are the parts in any Opeth songs that make you cringe?

For myself.. I don't really dislike any part, but something that really detracts from an atmosphere of a song, I feel, is the first 5 or so minutes of Black Rose Immortal... it's such a bad introduction to what's a beautiful song and it kept me from fully realising how good the song was until I actually played it through.

naaah, that beginning is cool, in my opinion.

the worst moment is -and im sure many will agree with me- that totally-out-of-place sound effect at the end of bleak.

That grainy sound, that flickers in and out? I think it's quite cool, I wish I could squeeze sounds like that outta my guitar

is that honestly coming from a guitar? anyway, it is very much out of place. very irrelevant and unnecessary, i guess.

Honestly I don't know, but it sounds like some strangely distorted guitar effect. I honestly think the start of BRI is more out of place... it just has basically no relevance to the rest of the song. It's like this harsh sounding harmony with Mikael growling... but then when it gets to 5 minutes, there's a really atmospheric acoustic section which basically leads you into the rest of the song... I don't mind the end of Bleak though coz it's on BWP and that album was very experimental.

That part in Bleak is just the last riff put through filtering or something. It struck me also, but I like it.

The beginning of BRI is my least favorite part of the song, probably. Actually, just that first riff. The rest of the song I love.

The last 5 minutes of BRI. It should have finished at 14.45.

nahh man, the last 5 minutes are awesome... the last minute of BRI has to be my favourite... when it just comes out of the atmospheric part and Mikael just holds the growl for about 18 seconds and it goes it that hypnotic riff that fades out of the song.

Actually, BRI has one of my favorite Opeth riffs ever in it. The 5:09 one. And the one after that. And the 7:35 one.. and 12:22.. I'm just listing them all at this point and I should stop.

It ends perfectly when he whispers "Black Rose Immortal". It just seems like they tried to drag the song on for too long.

Yeah I know what you're getting at Stinkfist... but that was basically for the whole song... it stops abruplty, then you have another acoustic section come in... it's not very structured.

Yeah, the song doesn't flow well enough. After about 4 minutes, there is a 7 second pause before the acoustic comes in and plays a riff which might as well be a new song.

ivanohe - are we talking about the same thing? that sound effect at the end of bleak could no way be coming from any kind of bass.

Yeah it's definately a processed take on the last part of the song.

that´s what Mikael said about this bleak thing in an interview...

How did you get that cool guitar sound at the end of “Bleak?”

I LOVE that. That’s Steven who came up with it. Basically I think we told him that we wanted the guitar to kind of fall to pieces. He just put that sound on it. We were laughing so hard because it’s so ugly. Then again it has a nice effect with the ugliest guitar sound on the album coming in contact with the next song “Harvest,” which opens up with a beautiful acoustic guitar.

I really dislike Twilight is my Robe 5:37 - 5:44. This short bridging from the acoustic part to the heavier doesn´t fit into the song in my opinion (but the rest of the song is great!).

I didn't like the ending of Bleak when I first heard it, but I do enjoy it whenever I actually pull BWP out of my collection and listen to it (somewhat infrequent compared to Orchid and MAYH)

I really dislike the ending of Serenity Painted Death where it suddenly just ends. The first time I heard it, it was on mp3. So I figured it was just a bad ripping job, or perhaps the song cut at that point, starting the next track with some kind of transition.

But then I bought the CD, and I realized it still ended so abruptly like that.

I heard that it was intentional, but I still hate it.

I agree what people are saying about BRI, I too think it shouldve ebded after the whisper...but I wish that acoustic part that comes after couldve been thrown into the beggining, the reason I cant listen to BRI anymore, other than Ive listned to it like 300 times, is beacuse of that lame riff in the beginning, by far Opeths mots unimaginative riff..I guess its ok if you like ur riffs thrashy unlike me. I like the ening of Bleak alot. Other than that, I cant really think of many weak moments.

I heard that cut off on SPD was an accident.. Hmmm...
I don't like that riff under the "I witnessed your beauty" part of Nectar. Too dissonent and repetative. Part of what makes dissonence sound good is having it in with non-dissanent intervals and chords. That riff always makes me feel like someone put my head in a meat grinder. Maybe thats what they were going for....?
