OK I haven't been to the site lately but if my memory serves me well, I recall prices being around $600 US per day.

I'm not Ablaze-Fredrik, but I can answer anyway. (no offense)

Nordström usually has one SM57 100% straight at the dustcap, and one at a slight angle besides the centered one. I made a really bad picture in Photoshop to illustrate this:

He sometimes uses other mics than the SM57, but this is more or less the standard procedure.

When we recorded our first album in september/october 1999 the price was 9000 SEK a day, which would be like USD $1100 today. I think our label managed to get it somewhat cheaper though. And I also think - but I'm not 100% sure - that we got more recording days for the samt total price on the more recent album recordings. Paid for two weeks, got three, or something similar.

This is the newest isolation booth, it was built in 2003 wall-to-wall with a small control room used for tracking only.

You know at first, I was excited at the fact that hopefully The Storytell will contact Fredrik and get as much info from him as possible.

But now, after reading the 'too many home studios'... and the doom and gloom reminders therein... I wonder... what's the point?

When I was looking for someone to mix my bands album last year it was about $6500 for him to do it. Compared to some other quotes we got he was right in the middle of everyone. Very fair on his prices.

Well, I did a very quick test with that mic technique... and it's totally awesome.
Tomorrow I'm going to put it thru a battery of tests & configurations, i.e. matching mics, different in each position, amp settings, which speaker on my 4 by 12, etc.

Quick observations: The mic directly on the center cap is brittle as hell, and the off axis is very smooth. I find if the gain is matched, bring up the off axis mic & have the on axis mic about 8-12 db's lower. Things will lard up REAL quick when you combine the two, so be careful with those low mids. A multiband is a must here.

OzNimbus; your observations are correct. The centered mic should definitely be lower, and you also have to watch out for phase errors. The absolutely easiest way would be to do a test recording with both mics to separate tracks and take a look at the waveforms. They should match, or at least be very close. Otherwise; move one of the mics slightly and repeat the test.

No, I exaggerated a bit for that illustration. The mics should be like ½ inch from the grill, or maybe a bit closer.

Thanks man.

Clips on the site are from our new album Underworld, which was not recorded in Fredman. The exact same technique was used though, with a 5150 mk II, an ENGL cab and two SM57's.

Try doing the same with a 609 at the center instead, that's the way I go about recording guitars and it's the same raw tone but with some more lows in it
