Exclamation Soundscape - GRAVE NEW WORLD finally being released in 2009!

http://www.myspace.com/soundscapeofficial

To say I'm more than freaked this is finally going to be released is an understatement.

Never heard of them before, but holy shit I just checked them out on myspace and was blown away. I can't wait until my grandkids have a chance to listen to this!

I must say, rock n roll lives through Soundscape!

What's it been? Ten years? I remember getting a little handout sampler at Powermad back in the 90s. They were awesome live, but it never translated onto recordings. Maybe this will be different.

I still regard "Discovery" as my favorite cd of alltime. I never got the chance to see them live.

hmmmm, I've mixed feelings on the whole thing. The drummer on discovery is a very close friend of mine. He left an AMAZING band to join Soundscape, a band which never really did anything for me.
Though they pulled off everything live, I thought it was just a load of fluff.
Then there was a personal issue. LOL

Anyway, Is there that much of a fanbase for people to be pulling out this stuff and trying to re-sell it?
didn't seem like a big base back in the day, didn't think there would be now.

but what do I know. Good luck to them.

PowerMad 3 straight years
ProgDay
Written up in Metal Edge
On the Fates Warning tribute cd and I recall they opened for FW in their native CT.

They were a small cult-band, but among the prog circles..Dream Theater fans, they did have a little bit of a following.

What band did Lou leave that was so good?

Not Lou, Phil. Wait, was it Discovery or that horrendous America the Beautiful thing Phil was on? Like some sort of multi-disk opus. I don't remember which CD was which. My failing memory.
The band was called Lexeme that he was in and they were very, very good.
Lou has played in some great bands though. there were a few stand outs but honestly I can't think of the names at the moment.

And honestly, it was a very small cult following Soundscape had, very small.

I'm just curious if there is a real call for this ' remixed and remastered " stuff, or if it is just ego.

But, Im' biased so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Man, I remember seeing these guys at a small metal fest in Connecticut in like 1998 or something. It was cool... I think the keyboardist even busted out a keytar at some point!

you're probably thinking of the Rock Opera "America The Beautiful" which I can see why many wouldn't be that into it. But much of that one has a drum machine anyway.

"Illago" also was one that their singer/keyboardist Rob Thorne did, another Rock Opera, but I'd say more of that is in the vein of "Discovery" but still, "Discovery" is them at their best. GNW is the follow-up. They put out an ep "Man and Machine" which some of GNW will include, but that one I could see with a proper mastering, being more appealing to fans of "Discovery."

Keep in mind: THIS HAS NEVER BEEN RELEASED. "Grave New World" was written and recorded back in 1998, but never mixed and mastered since the band broke up. That's why they are putting it out since it never was made available in any form.

Never heard of Lexeme..do they have a myspace or anywhere online to hear samples? What kind of music were they?

I'm really looking forward to Grave New World finally on disc..... sure, it's late in coming, but their Powermad shows were legendary and exciting.

Sumeet -- I was there in CT at that club where they played ..... great, great show -- and I still submit that Todd Rose is and was one of the best undiscovered guitarists ever.

I'll agree with that - he was (is, I'm sure) excellent.

Saw them live many times. They were a regular at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury, opening for Fates, Savatage, etc - pretty much anyone who came through here. Larry D & Mike - I agree - Todd Rose has phenomenal technique, but I always thought his tone was lacking - very processed sounding. Todd had an instructional video out, and was a Brian Moore Endorsee. I thought they were excellent musicians, but their tunes never did it for me - not a fan of Robs vocals or key lines (ducks flames)
http://www.toddrose.net/

My old band played a few shows with Lexeme as well. They were a 3 piece that made Rush look like they were in preschool - bassist played a 5 or 6 string, and guitarist played a white Universe 7 (this was back in 1994 or so). Phil S was STUPID good on drums - used to set up sideways to the audience. On a whole, I thought they were a much stronger band than Soundscape

Couldn't agree with you more!!!!!

< nods >

Originally, Lexeme was a 4 piece but switched to 3 after one of the guitar players left and that saw them playing out more. Phil's drumset was gigantic at one point. He had the same drum rack/riser used in the Savatage Gutter Ballet video. He was playing out clubs with that thing LOL.
Shame they didn't continue.

Ah, Soundcheck (as we all knew them back in the Powermad days) I like this band. I saw Thorne last year with his reunited old band Sacred Oath. He said he would give me a copy of this album on CDR. The reason it was never released is that it sounded like complete crap, and that EP they sold at Powermad would certainly suggest as much, so I hope he did the work to make it sound at least listenable. They were a cool band, and I have to third the notion that Todd was a ludicrously amazing player. It's nice to have this band back on the radar!

I remember seeing them at Orion Studios (hi, Mike) when there were about four people in attendance who weren't in one of the bands playing. My wife, ever the wise-ass who doesn't even like this music, was dogging Thorne about his costume. She always had a way to talking to these guys because, to her, they were just dudes up on the stage. Wally Farkas from Galactic Cowboys got some shit about his space boots as I recall, too. Poor Scott Stewart from Division was "Axl Rose" because of the skullet-hiding bandanna. And even, shit, was it Ed Carlson? caught crap at the Flotsam and Jetsam show in DC.

God love her.

so Lexeme never recorded anything?

Todd posted a glaring blog the other day about the way it sounded. Granted, he's obviously biased, but he stressed how much better Rob's vocals sounded.

Actually Lexeme recorded lots of material. I highly doubt you would find any of it though. They won the local Z-rock battle of the bands, first prize was free recording time and air play.
They also recorded an albums worth of material before that and several songs after Phil's departure. Though I've never searched the internet for any of it, I'd be really amazed if there was anything out there.

Yes Larry D....Soundscape "Grave New World" 10 years anniversary release, LOL. I had the cd from Rob when it was mixed and mastered very thin...Rob remixed and remastered this cd from the ground up. I spoke to him the other day and he was not sure when he was going to release the cd...He was actually talking June or July :-(. I think if enough people email him and create a demand...He will let it out. As far as Todd Rose, he is a band called Spectre now. Lou Caldarola played drums on "Iago" and "Grave..". Phil played drums on Discovery. There are many bands Lou had before Soundscape, the better ones were WINTERSONG and DOMINION. email Rob at soundscape2008@yahoo.com and let him know what you think of Soundscape and. I am sure he will release it quicker, I think he feels people sort of forgot about Soundscape, boy was he wrong!

Lou plays in Toxik, Soundscape, Kicksville, Your Name Hear, Limelight (Rush tribute) and a few others. He's a busy dude. Toxik is going back to the studio to record a couple of new songs for a re/new release later this year also.
