Hate to break it to you, but this stuff has and is being used in the studio right now. If you honestly think everyone who has cut an album is "talented" in the first place... well... lol.

Uhh...to the best of my knowledge this is production software and their "Direct Note Access" technology is a first. This is not being used in the studio right now the way you are thinking.

"Direct Note Access heralds a whole new age in audio editing: for the first time in audio production history it is possible to edit individual notes within chords and polyphonic recordings – separately!"

Making claims like this for something that already exists would probably put them out of business.

"Direct Note Access" is indeed a first. I suspect he was referring to past studio magic tools like the last version of Melodyne which did the same kind of thing for single notes.

On topic, I've seen this video before, and it's simply amazing that they were able to pull it off.

We used it alittle to add depth to some harmonies on our CD Trinity. It is an aid and good tool but it will not make the untalented sound talented. You still have to play and sing well, it will not invent sounds that are not there to begin with. You can simply do some tweaking. Say, one note is out but the rest is really good and you don't wont to lose the rest, you don't have to replay the whole section you can just fix that note.

Try fixing one of my ultraquick octave drops in the middle of a legato phrase coming from and leading into a "megavibratoed" note!!!
Not even Melodyne takes care of that.
I know, I have it, and it can't be done without any artefacts showing up. (Oops, maybe I shouldn't admit to this, for several reasons... )
The only option is to hit record one more time. Or in my case a million times over. And then end up picking the third take.
(Well, maybe it can be done but it would take quite some time just to maybe get there. It's way easier to just do another take.)

But, yes, this is one of the better, (if not the best), tools out there.
Why would one want to use software like this if one can sing?
Well, try tracking 64+ harmony tracks and not do any mistakes.
Especially if you're tracking two or more people onto the same track.
(Yes, there is a good argument for doing just that.)
All things considered, what makes fixing a note using Melodyne any worse than doing another take?
What's wrong with making an engineer's/producer's life endurable?
Can you imagine sitting there for hours on end hearing that one phrase repeated over and over and over again simply because the artist you're working for is either incompetent, worn out or having a bad day?
I'd go with Melodyne any day.

Oh, and have you ever wondered what that line would sound like with slightly different timing? With a different end note? Using a bit more/less vibrato?
Well, find out if it's worth doing without actually doing it!

Ok, so Urban said it better than me ;-) But I fully agree with every point you make bro. We used it a bit to see what various guitar harmonies and vocal harmonies would sound like so we could pick the right one without sitting there and playing a million variations. This is particularly useful if you don't have the money to sit there and burn up hours experimenting in the studio. You have your pre-production done but invaribly there is going to be some things you want to change in the studio.

Wow what incredibly awesome software! This blows my mind and I still can't believe that they can edit single notes of a chord! I have ~dreamed~ of this very thing while going through my audio engineering Bachelor program in college. Simply amazing... the things people can do with technology!
