I like doom, just not cheesy overrated, D&D playing St. Vitus or Candlemass cover bands. In fact, I wouldn't even call most of that crap doom in the first place - it's mid-tempo and filled with triumphant melodies and guitar refrains. It's about as "doom" as a litter of puppies. I like My Dying Bride, October Tide, Daylight Dies, Rapture, early-Katatonia, Saturnus, Swallow The Sun, Uaral, Ufomammut, Cough, YOB. You know (or maybe not???), original bands that actually do something different with their music and actually sound like miserable "doomy" bands.

See, there lays the difference my friend.
Most of the doom bands you stated above I would not consider doom, aside from YOB. Those are all dark metal bands with doom influences. Yeah, I am being picky here, but many here would get picky about what is referred to as prog VS power right?? ![]() Listen closer to Gates of Slumber. Sure, Vitus are a MAJOR influence, but there is just as much Deep Purple and Rainbow and Manilla Road going on as there is Vitus.

Dark metal to me covers a wide spectrum of bands that are not full on death metal or doom metal.
Novembers Doom is a primary example. Aeonic mentioned many others, like MDB, Saturnus, Swallow The Sun, etc. I would include Draconian as well, and even early Katatonia. I know I have referred to MDB as dark metal before and many here vehemently disagreed saying they are the epitome of doom metal. There is as much Celtic Frost as their is Black Sabbath in My Dying Bride. As well as many other influences. Therefore, to me, it falls under what I call "dark metal"

Ha, in no way am I the doom king!
Even within doom, there are only about 25 bands I REALLY like and listen to on a regular basis. Maybe we are mismatching conversations. I never referred to Manilla Road as doom. Actually, quite the contrary! I was stating that Gates of Slumber had more going on than JUST doom (IE - their obvious Sabbath and Vitus influences) but also incorporated bands like Rainbow, Purple, and the Road (Who obviously are not doom). Anyhow, glad you checked out some Road! What of theirs did you check out by the way?

What term, death doom? I wouldn't say I hate it.
I mean I would rather someone refer to MDB as death / doom, as opposed to straight doom, which some folks here did. That's all.

Yeah any time anyone brings up "Gothic" from Paradise Lost it's always described as doom/death. It's death metal and doom, don't see what's so complicated about it to some people hahaha.
