BRITAIN’S last surviving First World War veteran has been recognised for his bravery - with free beer for the rest of his life.

Harry Patch, 109, won five medals for his service during the war but now his local boozer has honoured him free drinks.

The Rose and Crown in Limpley Stoke, Somerset, made the offer after inviting Harry to open the pub after a refit.

Harry, who was injured in the 1917 Passchendaele offensive which killed half a million men, drank in the pub when he was a young man.

Speaking at the packed re-opening ceremony, where he signed copies of his book The Last Fighting Tommy - A Tale by Harry Patch, Harry said: ''It's a very kind gesture.

''I must be the envy of many a younger man, being offered free beer in a pub. It's like being a child in a sweet shop. The beer is very good here too.''

Landlord Bill Fawdry, 43, who took over the pub six months ago, also offered a 10 per cent discount to servicemen returning from operations, and runs a year-round Poppy Appeal.

Bill added: ''It's all about giving something back in return for what these men have done for us over the years. Not just Harry, but the people in every conflict that put their own lives at risk."

Brave Harry also served in the Auxiliary Fire Service during World War Two.

He has received five military medals, including France's highest military award, the Légion d'honneur.

I just think that it would be crazy to be the "last surviving" participant in anything, let alone WWI.

He's only the last surviving Brit from WWI. I say they get all the survivors from the Axis and Allies and have an over the top 30 man battle royale.

remember when they did that with the Survivor Series? 'cept it wasn't an BR but a standard SS match with the surviving heels/faces facing off

I just bought a Fullers Vintage ale from 1999 and one from 2007!

Also a Fullers Jack Frost and an ESB Goblet. The Goblet is fucking ace!

Drinking a Mac's Blackwatch Cream Porter. Not bad, especially considering it was only 1.19 a bottle.

Just mixed a six pack:

2 Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale 2007
2 Anchor Liberty Ale
Left Hand Milk Stout
Spanish Peak Winter Cheer

I couldn't believe how hoppy the Celebration Ale was, one reviewer on BA wrote that it's a Christmas beer only because it taste like you're taking a bite out of a pine-tree.

Hoping to hit up The Still sometime this week
