Shit, the only Mendocino brews that have a good score is the Talon Barley Wine from what I see so far, but I'll take yer word for it, nigga.
![]() PS - I have yet to try a "Barley Wine." I suppose because of the "wine" part, even though it is a beer. I hear they age well as well. I will eventually. That Talon is everywhere around here. |

word to the wise on barley wine:
IT WILL FUCK YOU UP. seriously. i've had many barley wines, and the only consistency is a) amazingly bold flavoUr and b) they will knock you on yer fucking ARSE. the best way to describe them is that they taste like a beer (particularly a Strong Ale) and will level your ass like wine does. they can catch you offguard because you think they are beer so therefore you drink 32 oz. of them, then you try to stand up and realize it feels like you just drank a bottle and a half of wine (because you did). the best barley wine i've had was called Old Horizontal. something like 11% ralcohol, a buddy of mine (one of only 2 dudes i've met who can outdrink me) and i split a 6-pack once and were LEVELED. on top of everything, the shit tasted great. will i ever get back to watching Sin City tonight? or shall i make 429087504287 more paragraphs in this post instead? ![]() edit: i've never had Mendocino barley wine, i can only guess it's amazing because even Sierra Nevada (50% good, 50% shite) has a GREAT barley wine. |

and oh yeah, okay that was my second Shakespeare Stout a little while ago. still have to give it the "meh" rating as while it was perfectly good, absolutely nothing stood out about it. a bit too thin, and didn't have any balls to it. pretty much Rogue can be counted on for Dead Guy Ale (which is excellent) and then a whole shitload of 2nd class brews that are perfectly fine but not amazing. particularly disappointing as an Oregon brewery, as i place that region amongst the upper echelon of brewmeisters (then again that still places them in top 10 contention i suppose).
ps: i decided to hit the cheap wine now because my beer is gone. don't feel like sobering up, but don't feel like gettin shnockered off the Jim Beam you know what i'm sayin? |

One night, the soul of wine was singing in the flask:
"O man, dear disinherited! to you I sing This song full of light and of brotherhood From my prison of glass with its scarlet wax seals. I know the cost in pain, in sweat, And in burning sunlight on the blazing hillside, Of creating my life, of giving me a soul: I shall not be ungrateful or malevolent, For I feel a boundless joy when I flow Down the throat of a man worn out by his labor; His warm breast is a pleasant tomb Where I'm much happier than in my cold cellar. |

I hear ya. Barley Wines are usually in the 10-12% range, so it is obvious they will FUCK you up. That's like most of the shit I drink, wether it be Imperial Stouts at around 9% or IPA's around 7-9%...I fucking love them, and before I know it, I'm absolutely SHITFACED.
Old Horizontal sounds VERY familiar, although there are several beers out there called "Vertical" or "Horizontal", lol. So far, North Coast Brewery is a HUGE 2/2 with their Red Seal Ale and Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. Both HIGHHHHHHHLLLY KICKASS! |
