Dave Brockie Experience – Songs For The Wrong

Dave Brockie Experience – Songs For The Wrong
Metalblade Records – 2003
By Russell Garwood

The Dave Brockie Experience comprises vocalist and bass player Dave Brockie (Oderus from Gwar), drummer Brad Roberts (Gwar’s Jizmak) and Mike Derks (Balsac in Gwar) on guitar. Collectively the trio plays comedic, pop-punk; with a three minute song based in its entirety on one four second tune and a guitar solo, the focus is clearly not on musical prowess. This makes for simplistic, at times entertaining but dull music which quickly gets monotonous. This wouldn’t be so much of a problem, apart from the fact that I find the majority of Dave Brockie’s lyrics banal, juvenile and really not that funny – with entire songs dedicated to dog shit and the lack of cheese in China, anything vaguely amusing is welcome relief. Track listings like:
1. Damn That Money
2. Slowpoke
3. Should the Ugly Girl Blow Me?
4. The Chinese Have No Cheese
5. Music is like Beer
6. Hard For a 'tard
7. I Wanna Be a Squirrel
8. Shatilla
9. He's Going Crazy!
10. Make Money Off Your Friends
11. Dog Log
12. Slips of Paper
13. March of the Faggot Soldiers
14. Hey Buddy
15. Medieval Werewolf
16. Churchmouse in the Snow
17. Isn't it Grand Boys?

should give you an idea whether you will appreciate the humour or not. If so, “Songs For The Wrong” may well be up your street, as the lyrics could make up for the musical mediocrity. If not, this release is one to avoid.
