Destruction - Metal Discharge

DESTRUCTION – METAL DISCHARGE
Nuclear Blast - 2003

By Rodrigo Escandon

After the highly successful The Antichrist, German thrash metal veterans Destruction is back with another strong effort, Metal Discharge. This album just provides more of the music we have come to expect and enjoy from Destruction and at times it sounds more raw and in your face than The Antichrist.

The opener “The Ravenous Beast” may scare you a bit for the first 10 seconds because it starts off with a very thin production and for a quick moment I began thinking “Not another album ruined by bad production” but that would not be true because after 10 seconds you have the band assaulting your ear drums with a vintage Destruction thrash song. The title track “Metal Discharge” keeps the intensity going with another scorching song that showcases excellent guitar work from Marc. “Rippin’ The Flesh Apart” may start out slower but it is another stand out song due to the fact of how it speeds up as the song progresses. “Mortal Remains” and “Fear of the Moment’ have Schmier singing at his harshest and nastiest immediately recalling his earlier 80’s style.

This is the Destruction we have come to known since the reunion occurred a few years ago. It seems that the band is in cruise control at the moment, I think that The Antichrist is the best post-reunion album and while Metal Discharge may lack some of that “magic” that was present in the last album by no means does that take anything away from Metal Discharge. After all its good old-style thrash and there is nothing wrong with that.
