In order to celebrate their 20th Anniversary as a band and unable to re-release their debut EP (commonly known as the
Tyrants EP) and their first full-length
Ample Destruction, Colorado’s
Jag Panzer did the best next thing and re-recorded most of the songs from these two releases as well as a few from their
Dissident Alliance album and
Chain of Command bootleg.
Decade of the Nail-Spiked Bat is a 2CD release that features songs that up to know have been mostly available to fans from cheap bootlegs and it is finally great to hear these classics in a proper release.
Do not expect to hear the band that has been getting more attention with the releases
Thane to the Throne and
Mechanized Warfare. This is old-school metal from the 1980’s reminiscent of
Iron Maiden,
Accept,
Rainbow and the whole NWOBHM movement. Even the production has a raw and stripped feeling that only enhances the feeling of these songs. These songs come from another decade, another period and just because they were re-recorded does not mean they have to sound like today’s
Jag Panzer.
Some of my favorites are the faster songs such as “Licensed to Kill” (a staple in their recent live shows), “Reign of the Tyrants”, “Battle Zones”, “Generally Hostile”, “Symphony of Terror” and “Iron Shadows”.
Including extensive liner notes from Mark Briody (I believe) this release is perfect for those who were waiting for a proper release of the classic
Jag Panzer albums as well as to those fans who want to know the roots of this great band.
