Crionics - Human Error (Ways to Self Destruction)

Crionics - Human Error (Ways to Self Destruction)
Candlelight Records - 2004
By Adam McAuley

Crionics are a very promising four-piece outfit from Poland. They play an outstanding combination of black and death metal. Symphonics are heavily present in the music and only enhance the ambitions of the band. From track one, "Satanic Syndrome 666", you know that you're in for something special. Fast, melodic passages remind one of Emperor, and harsh, high-pitched vocals only heighten this comparison. But there is an equally effective use of guttural growls reminiscent of other death metal bands; Polish compatriots Behemoth showing perhaps the greatest resemblance.

The song structures are swirling and symphonic, conjuring up images of symphonic black metal's kings, like the aforementioned Emperor. Harsh blasting is also used, making one think of Suffocation and other Gods of the death metal genre. The sonic landscapes created by the band never sit still and remain fiercely entertaining, due to numerous tempo shifts and an exorbitant amount of keyboard and synth usage. Some of the best guitar work within the black metal genre can be found here; the aggressive staccato approach and oftentimes dissonant riffage will mesmerize you throughout. Look no further than the punishing title track for an idealistic view of the dizzying and frantic guitar chops on Human Error.

Crionics have made their own warzone, and the listener is subject to the blitz of stunning musicianship and incredible songwriting within it. Highly recommended. Crionics are a band to look out for.

9/10
