Elegeion – The Last Moment

Elegeion – The Last Moment
Dark Symphonies – Dark 24 - August 16th 2005
By Russell Garwood

Elegeion hail from Australia, and – like a paedophile in an old people’s home (too offensive? Nah, this is a metal review after all!) - really aren’t very happy bunnies at all. The Last Moment showcases some solid doom, with gothic and neoclassical touches. Melancholic sung female vocals front the music, adding a graceful, funereal feel to the proceedings, entirely in fitting with the mournful lyrics and downhearted melodies. In contradistinction to these gentler elements sporadic growling adds a heavier feel to some of the songs. The guitars prove tuneful, often a mix of acoustics and distorted electrics, driving the mid-to-slow paced songs along their meandering course. Occasional solos are highly effective, under which prominent bass and powerful drumming keep everything in time. Piano, and genuine strings add another layer to the already multi-faceted music, while purely acoustic tracks act to fragment the otherwise harsher music.

The production on The Last Moment is excellent, as required for the symphonic sound, itself perfectly matched by artwork courtesy of Travis Smith. Top notch song-writing, strong performances and a high standard of execution all make this a release worthy of much attention from doom fans. I look forward to hearing more from Elegeion, my new favourite antipodean doomsters.

7/10
