Coldseed - Completion Makes The Tragedy
Nuclear Blast - NB 1655-2 - 2006
By Brandon Strader
Coldseed, featuring in their ranks the vocalist from
Soilwork (Björn Strid), are ready to reveal their latest work,
Completion Makes The Tragedy, to the masses. For this endeavor, the sound is less catchy and the rhythm is a lot punchier than
Soilwork. It's still pretty damn catchy, though, and features a lot of grand synthesizer throughout not only the heavy sections, but also throughout the mellow sections... Yes,
Coldseed features some fantastic mellow compositions, and more unique arrangements than most melodic death groups.
Mr. Strid supplies his definitive vocal performance - including screams
and more melodious clean vocals. A lot of the vocal melodies are very impressive, as are the vocal arrangements throughout the choruses. The overall sound of
Coldseed is a lot less brutal than that of
Soilwork, but with frequent outbursts of screaming death! Indeed,
Completion Makes The Tragedy is something completely different and exerts a lot more freedom than what is possible through
Soilwork, as the fans of groups such as
Soilwork and
In Flames have become a bit sensitive about what the groups are releasing, constantly bashing the latest evolution or whatnot.
Coldseed is somewhat of an evolution as far as synthesizers, song structure, atmosphere, and such goes.
Occasionally, a part will pop out and surprise you with it's similarity to the
Soilwork style, yet the majority of the material - even the stuff similar to
Soilwork - is pretty great and perfectly executed. The guitar work is extremely impressive on
Completion Makes The Tragedy, ranging from a heavy thrash, an atmospheric acoustic arrangement, and even some very skillful guitar solos are busted out here and there. This is a fantastic debut from
Coldseed, and should definitely be checked out by all fans of Melodic Death metal. Also, the artwork is simply beautiful!
