Hypnosis - Seeds of Fate

Hypnosis – Seeds of Fate
Bent Records - 2006
By Adam McAuley

A very fractured, uneven feel is created over disjointed soundscapes that meld together to form a cohesive entity. Similar to the direction that Gojira has begun to take on From Mars to Sirius, a compelling sound is developed. A well done combination of female and male vocals is present adding texture to the sound, somewhat akin to the likes of The Project Hate MCMXCIX. The guttural male vocals may not be as enjoyable on their own as they are in combination with the female ones, however. Also the album has a sort of discordant sound that is highly appealing. A bit of repetitiveness does reveal itself over the progression of the disc, but overall it holds your attention quite well.

The incorporation of subtle electronic elements also adds another dimension to the sound as well. The sound is quite varied, however it isn’t over-indulgent by any means. Pacing is often interrupted by the aforementioned electronic sections. A rather distorted aura is thus created and all of the musical elements come together to create something that is relatively futuristic in tone. The cold opening track “Genesis of Destruction” sets a wonderful tone for the remainder of the album and the similarities to Gojira are revealed for certain. A solid foundation of drumming and rhythm back up their semi-punishing, but regardless interesting assault.

Overall, a solid, but not remarkable album for the style. It could be somewhat looked down upon by people that aren’t massive fans of the Gojira-type sound, but for anyone looking for an album with industrial elements interspersed with a semi-melodic death metal style, they should simply dive right in. A relatively great album.
