Debauchery - Back In Blood

Debauchery - Back In Blood
AFM Records - AFM153-3 - March 23rd, 2007
By Michael Koger

A few years ago, Six Feet Under had the bright idea of doing an entire album of covers. Then they covered AC/DC’s Back In Black in its entirety. Neither album was well received, to say the least. Now, enter Debauchery. Debauchery, taking cues from their favorite band, Six Feet Under, decided to pay tribute to AC/DC with the album Back In Blood (you see what they did there).

The world does not, in this reviewer’s opinion, need a Six Feet Under clone band, nor does the world need another death metal band covering classic rock bands. The music is decent at best, the vocals are pulled off nicely, but that’s as far as the praise goes. The lyrics are laughable and slightly embarrassing. Whether it’s intentionally supposed to be funny like Crotchduster or Blackthrone, I don’t know. Witness the eloquence displayed on the track 'Baptise This World In Blood': “Now is the time to maim/ Time to butcher bitches”. This almost seems more appropriate on a hardcore gangster rap record. In case the band hadn’t already alienated the female audience by the album’s halfway mark, the concept of “butchering bitches” is brought up, yet again, in the appropriately titled 'Butcher of Bitches'. “Crazy and insane/Bitch die in pain /I’m a perverse man /I am the Butcher Of Bitches.” At times, the lyrics border on Cannibal Corpse style theatrics but never get that close, like on track 11, 'Storm of Iron': "Coming to get you /With the chainsaw /Bowels churning /Intestines burning.” Mmm…cozy.

Then, there are the covers. For those of you lucky enough to seek out the digi-pack edition, you will be treated with seven covers. The bands covered are Genesis, Rammstein, The Beatles, Judas Priest, Manowar, Rolling Stones, and Six Feet Under of course. The promo cd I received only had the first three covers, and the only decent one was the Rammstein cover. There’s something about death metal growls over Genesis and Beatles tracks that rub me the wrong way. The fact that they chose a song from the pop era of Genesis rather than from their classic prog era makes it even that more unbearable. The music is spot on with the covers, but as soon as the vocals come in, all bets are off.

Does the world need a Six Feet Under clone band? I don’t think so. This is an album you can skip purchasing.
