Demonic Resurrection - A Darkness Descends

Demonic Resurrection - A Darkness Descends
Demonstealer Records - Unknown - Unknown
By Simon Douglass

A Darkness Descends is the new album from Demonic Resurrection.

After the intro 'Dreams Of The Dead' opens the album up with a straightforward death metal assault, it's after that the band start playing around more and experimenting. The intro to 'Apocalyptic Dawn' sounds like Metallica from the eighties while later on during the song the clean vocals show the band is not afraid to deviate from the norm.

Throughout the album the piano gives a classical sound, while still remaining death metal, something that works well. In fact the whole album has a classical/operatic feeling to it. 'Behind The Mask Of God' while starting in brutal fashion contains a section of female vocals that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Nightwish album, but somehow they work here.

'Carnival Of Depravity' starts exactly like something out of a carnival and shows how this band is not afraid to stray away from what we know as the norm.

A Darkness Descends is a good album and shows that the band is willing to experiment with their sound to create something that is different while still containing the core element of death metal. If there is any criticism with this album it’s that at times the songs don’t flow into each other and hence it can sound rather bitty. However in truth that’s a minor point and one that shouldn’t stop you from getting hold of it.

Sound review. Demonic Resurrection display a great deal of potential and draw on a number of influences on this release. While the band is largely successful with what it attempts to achieve on this disc, a little more focus would have made it the album more cohesive and a better listen all around. Definitely worth a listen!
